The Mask We Wear: Generational Trauma & Finding Faith

What if the patterns shaping your adult life began long before you understood where they came from? In this powerful episode of Sh!t Creek Survivors, host Cam McKay sits down with Kevin Bush, author of The Long Way Home, for an honest conversation about generational trauma, alcoholism, shame, marriage, and finding a new direction through faith. For years, Kevin hid behind the mask of being the funny guy and the life of the party. He chased validation, struggled with alcohol, and tried to be the person everyone else wanted him to be. But beneath that mask were childhood wounds and emotional patterns he would eventually recognize in his own adult relationships. Kevin shares a powerful realization about generational trauma: sometimes, it's not just about what happened to us. It's also about what was missing. The conversations that never happened. The emotions we learned to hide. The simple question he says his father never asked: "Are you okay?" When his marriage began to fall apart, Kevin was forced to confront some uncomfortable truths about himself and the patterns he had inherited. Through writing, journaling, accountability, church, prayer, and baptism, he began working toward a different life. Cam and Kevin explore what it means to stop living for other people's approval, confront shame, rebuild self-worth, and find purpose in the experiences that once felt overwhelming. This isn't a story about having everything figured out. It's about being willing to face the truth, ask for help, and take the first step toward change. IN THIS EPISODE: • Generational trauma and the emotional wounds passed down through families• Childhood bullying and learning to hide behind a mask• Alcoholism, blackouts, and the search for validation• Marriage breakdown and recognizing destructive patterns• Shame, isolation, and rebuilding self-worth• Journaling and learning to recognize missed opportunities• Faith, prayer, baptism, and finding a new purpose• Breaking family cycles and choosing a different path Kevin also shares a simple but powerful prayer that became part of his journey: "Lord protect me from myself." Whether you're struggling with addiction, carrying childhood wounds, navigating relationship challenges, or searching for a deeper sense of purpose, this conversation is a reminder that your past does not have to dictate your future. ABOUT KEVIN BUSH Kevin Bush is the author of The Long Way Home, a memoir exploring generational trauma, alcoholism, relationships, and the difficult work of rebuilding your life. From Hustler to Holy: How a Former Escort Business Owner Found Redemption

From severe childhood trauma and building an escort agency to facing a 7-year prison sentence and finding ultimate redemption—this is one of the most raw and unfiltered conversations we've ever had on Sh!t Creek Survivors. In this episode, Cam sits down with author, Christian speaker, and recovery advocate Valerie Rosas. Valerie shares her incredible story of surviving childhood sexual abuse, addiction, organized crime, and incarceration, and how she found faith, grace, and a brand-new calling behind bars. Valerie shares her path from foster care to sobriety, prison, and a new calling to help others get into treatment. Her story is both a survival testimony and a practical look at what it takes to break cycles of abuse and rebuild identity. If you or someone you know is navigating trauma, addiction, or trying to rebuild their life from rock bottom, this conversation brings the hope and perspective you need. -------------------------------------------------- KEY TOPICS COVERED: • Up Sh!t Creek: Why Valerie frames her life story around this phrase and how it reflects her childhood, addiction, and ultimate recovery. • Overcoming Early Trauma: Growing up in foster care, surviving severe childhood abuse, and battling deep feelings of being unsafe and unlovable. • The Illusion of Control: How entering the adult industry through a booking role and building her own escort business created a false sense of security after trauma. • The Downward Spiral: Navigating addiction later in life with meth at age 26 and alcohol soon after to quiet inner chaos and panic. • Confronting Shame & Secrecy: How family denial and being blamed reinforced the belief that she had to handle everything alone. • The Turning Point in Jail: Facing severe charges, surrendering through prayer, the Holy Spirit, and experiencing unconditional love and grace behind bars. • The Work of Recovery: Why sobriety wasn't an overnight fix, but required repeated effort, 12-step programs, church, sober living, and strong boundaries. • Grace & A New Path: Being released on probation instead of serving a seven-year sentence and using that second chance to rebuild her life and family relationships. • Her Current Mission: Helping people get into treatment, speaking publicly, writing, and taking her message of hope into prisons and jails. -------------------------------------------------- TIMESTAMPS: 00:00 - Welcome back & Episode Framing 05:00 - Up Sh!t Creek: What the Phrase Means to Valerie 08:15 - Childhood Trauma, Foster Care & Fighting for Safety 14:30 - Entering the Adult Industry & Building an Escort Service 21:10 - The Downward Spiral: Meth, Alcohol & Quieting the Chaos 28:45 - Secrecy, Family Denial & Carrying the Weight Alone 35:00 - Facing 7 Years in Prison & The Turning Point in Jail 42:10 - Experiencing Grace, Surrender & Faith Behind Bars 48:30 - The Reality of Recovery: AA, Church & Setting Boundaries 55:20 - Rebuilding Family, Finding Purpose & Taking the Message into Prisons -------------------------------------------------- CONNECT WITH VALERIE ROSAS: • Book: From Hustler to Holy: A Journey of Pain, Purpose, and Redemption • Website: https://ValerieRosas.net • Email: vallovesjesus1@gmail.com • Facebook: https://facebook.com/ValerieRosas • Instagram: https://instagram.com/valerierosass • YouTube: https://youtube.com/@ValerieRosasMinistry • TikTok: https://tiktok.com/@valerierosass -------------------------------------------------- CONNECT WITH SH!T CREEK SURVIVORS: Welcome back to Sh!t Creek Survivors—where we believe one thing: we all have a sh!t creek story, and this is where we share them. Her Daughter Had Cancer. Then Something Extraordinary Happened | Sarah Tolson

Her Daughter Had Cancer. Then Something Extraordinary Happened | Sarah Tolson What happens when your child gets cancer—and the experience changes everything you thought you knew about life? Sarah Tolson's seven-year-old daughter, Ella, began having seizures. What followed was a terrifying medical journey involving repeated hospitalizations, autoimmune encephalitis, and eventually a diagnosis of Burkitt's lymphoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer. Sarah watched her daughter endure months of chemotherapy, painful complications, and moments when she feared she could lose her. But when Ella became cancer-free, Sarah discovered something unexpected: the crisis wasn't over for her. After months of living in survival mode, Sarah was dealing with hypervigilance, anxiety, and the challenge of learning how to feel safe again. Her search for healing led her to meditation and Reiki—and eventually to experiences that changed the way she understood spirituality, intuition, and life after death. Today, Sarah Tolson is a Reiki practitioner, intuitive medium, and wellness guide. Through Grounded Harmony, she helps people explore meditation, nervous system regulation, energy work, intuitive practices, and emotional resilience. Not All Alcoholics Live Under a Bridge — or Recover the Same Way | Tracy Liberatore

Not all alcoholics live under a bridge. And not all alcoholics recover the same way. What does alcoholism look like when you don't fit the stereotype? What if traditional sobriety doesn't work for you? In this episode of Sh!t Creek Survivors, Cam sits down with Tracy Liberatore, Esq. to talk openly about alcoholism, sobriety, recovery, shame, identity, spirituality, trauma, and finding a recovery path that fits. Tracy built an accomplished career as a physician assistant, earned her law degree with valedictorian honors, passed the California bar, and built a medical-legal career. Behind that success, she was struggling with alcohol and Ativan. Tracy didn't recognize herself as an alcoholic because she didn't fit the picture she had in her head of what an alcoholic was supposed to look like. She shares the ambulance ride, hospitalization, return to drinking, treatment, and the realization that she needed to understand the "why" behind her drinking. She also explains why traditional AA recovery didn't resonate with her and how changing the way she viewed herself became an important part of her sobriety journey. Cam and Tracy explore shame, childhood beliefs, religion, forgiveness, trauma, identity, spirituality, past-life regression, family patterns, and letting go of beliefs we've carried for years. Tracy is the author of Mind Over Martini, about her journey with alcohol, sobriety, spirituality, and finding a path to recovery outside the traditional AA model. She is also founder of National Expert Academy and creator of the C.L.E.A.R. Method™. Whether you're in recovery, questioning your relationship with alcohol, love someone struggling with addiction, or want to understand alcoholism from a different perspective, this conversation offers a different perspective on recovery. NOTE: Tracy's discussion of spirituality, past-life regression, and recovery reflects her personal beliefs and experiences.
