Reading the Results: How Value Investors Win Reporting Season | Wealthy+Wise Ep31

August reporting season delivered more than just earnings results. For the prepared value investor, it delivered opportunity. In this special family edition of Wealthy + Wise, TeamInvest founders Howard Coleman and Andrew Coleman join Anna Napoli to dissect the highs and lows of the August reporting season across the ASX. Their core message is consistent and compelling: when markets over-react to results, good or bad, a prepared investor does not panic. They plan. Howard and Andrew explain why their reporting season scorecard sits at 8 out of 10 this year, how the bipolar nature of markets creates genuine buying opportunities twice a year, and why the share price that falls after a strong result is often the most valuable signal of all. They compare a decade of earnings data across Australia's largest retailers, examine three headline-making results through the Conscious Investor framework, and take a viewer question that cuts straight to the heart of reporting season strategy.  Key Segments and Timestamps: •  00:52  Reporting season scorecard: 8 out of 10 •  02:00  How value investors prepare before results arrive •  05:30  Why strong results still send share prices lower •  10:00  Reading the earnings chart: BHP vs Data#3 •  15:00  The split consumer economy and second-order thinking •  20:00  Ten years of retail earnings: JB Hi-Fi vs Harvey Norman •  26:00  Head-to-head: ProMedicus at a PE of 130 •  28:30  Head-to-head: WiseTech's acquisition-driven growth •  32:00  Head-to-head: ResMed and the GLP-1 opportunity •  35:00  AI and the SaaS sector: who benefits and who doesn't •  38:00  Viewer Q&A: Rob from Adelaide asks the best question of the season  Subscribe, leave a review, and send your questions to wealthy@ausbiz.com.au. Why Investors Fall For A Good Story | Wealthy + Wise Ep30

What actually separates a genuine long-term opportunity from a story that has run well ahead of the facts? In this episode, Andrew Coleman joins Nadine Blayney to trace why investors are so susceptible to a compelling narrative, drawing on anthropology and the psychology of social proof, before putting the idea to the test against real market history. They walk through the 2001 tech crash and the surprising list of its "biggest losers", including Cisco, Microsoft and a then-tiny company called Nvidia, then turn the same lens on the green energy transition and the wild mispricing of Whitehaven Coal during 2022. Andrew explains the simple test a patient investor can use to check whether sentiment has outrun fundamentals, and applies the same thinking to today's AI theme. The episode closes with a viewer question from Bronte on Teaminvest holding Data3.   SEGMENT OUTLINE •     00:00 - Why stories are so persuasive to investors •     00:53 - The anthropology and psychology behind believing a good story •     03:00 - When a compelling story starts to outrun the fundamentals •     05:00 - The emotive-language test and comparing today's PE ratio to history •     08:40 - Head to head: the 2001 tech crash (Cisco, Microsoft, Nvidia, Michael Saylor) •     16:23 - Head to head: the green transition and Whitehaven Coal •     20:35 - Applying the same test to the AI theme •     24:07 - Viewer question from Bronte: Andrew on Data3's result   Subscribe, leave a review, and send your questions to wealthy@ausbiz.com.au. Reporting Season: Where Small Cap Fortunes Are Made | Wealthy+Wise Ep29

This week's episode goes smaller. With a $1 billion market cap cutoff, Andrew Coleman from Teaminvest and returning guest Richard Hemming from Under the Radar Report work through what reporting season really reveals about the small end of the ASX, the part of the market that rarely gets the scrutiny given to the ASX 50 or ASX 100. The conversation starts with the fundamentals: what a genuine margin of safety looks like on a small cap balance sheet, why founder-led management can be a strength and a risk in the same result, and why this reporting season is showing a market that has become far less forgiving of companies that can't answer the question, what have you done for me lately. From there, Andrew and Richard go head to head on a run of results, including a founder-led furniture retailer working through the costs of an offshore expansion, a construction business with a genuine Olympic infrastructure tailwind, and a healthcare device business still waiting on its next big product to clear the line. Andrew also shares his first reaction to CSL's result, and why he thinks the market's initial verdict missed the point entirely. The episode closes with a viewer question from Sid, following on from last week's Credit Corp discussion, on whether learning from mistakes is a genuine competitive advantage. Andrew's answer covers the three things every investor and every business has access to that compound over time, and why only one of them can only ever compound upward. ●        00:00 — Welcome, and why this week goes smaller: the sub-$1 billion focus ●        01:06 — Richard Hemming from Under the Radar Report joins the panel ●        02:38 — What Richard looks for first in a small cap result: margin of safety ●        05:14 — The K-shaped market, and why this reporting season is more idiosyncratic ●        07:25 — Buffett's first rule of investing, and why small caps raise the stakes on it ●        09:06 — Comparing two retail results under the same discretionary spending pressure ●        14:16 — A founder-led furniture retailer: why Teaminvest exited a long-held position ●        16:23 — A small industrial name with a genuine Olympic infrastructure tailwind ●        21:11 — A healthcare device maker still waiting on its next big product launch ●        24:34 — CSL's result, and why the market's first reaction missed the story ●        29:58 — Voting machine versus weighing machine: Benjamin Graham's lesson revisited ●        31:24 — Viewer question: is learning from your mistakes a competitive advantage? The Real Reason Good Stocks Get Punished | Wealthy+Wise Ep28

If this way of thinking about investing resonates, find out if Teaminvest is right for you. https://teaminvest.com.au/start-ytb?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=wealthy-wise&utm_content=stocks-get-punished Reporting season puts every listed company under the microscope, but the share price on the day often has more to do with expectations than results. In this episode of Wealthy + Wise, host Nadine Blayney sits down with Teaminvest's Kevin Robinson to explore why a record profit can send a share price tumbling, why a disappointing result can occasionally send it soaring, and how a patient investor separates the signal from the noise.  Kevin walks through his personal preparation checklist for reporting season, understanding a company's key risks and moats before the numbers land, watching the CEO and chairman's commentary for what it reveals about management, and staying alert to the cognitive biases (herd thinking, false precision, fear of making mistakes) that derail good decisions when a price moves sharply. Then, in Head to Head, Kevin and Nadine work through three results already on the table this season — Credit Corp Group, REA Group and Nick Scali; unpacking what the market was really reacting to in each case. The episode closes with a viewer question on whether profit or dividend should matter more to an income-focused investor. In this episode: ●      00:00 Introduction — why reporting season matters ●      01:19 What reporting season really tells a value investor ●      06:17 Managing cognitive bias during reporting season ●      11:08 Market expectations vs your own expectations ●      12:21 Buffett's warning: don't fall in love with a company ●      14:57 Head to Head: Credit Corp Group ●      18:54 Head to Head: REA Group ●      24:08 Head to Head: Nick Scali ●      32:03 Viewer question: profit or dividend? Sectors vs Great Businesses | Wealthy+Wise Ep27

Should investors think in sectors at all? Banks, miners, healthcare, tech — the labels dominate market commentary, but this week's episode asks whether they deserve a place in your decision-making, or whether long-term returns are driven by one thing only: the quality of the underlying business. Host Nadine Blayney referees a genuine head-to-head between Sanjee Narendran of Teaminvest and Andrew Whiteland of DP Wealth Advisory. Sanjee makes the patient investor's case: ignore the labels, find businesses that will be materially larger in five, ten and twenty years, and — crucially — spend your energy identifying and removing the “dogs” rather than hunting unicorns. Andrew brings the ETF perspective and the case for a low-cost core — while conceding that buying the basket means accepting it exactly as it comes, concentration, averages and all. The pair then stress-test their frameworks on real ASX businesses — a small engineering company serving the mining sector, and one of Australia's best-known healthcare names now trading under a cloud — before Sanjee answers viewer Meg's question about the one result Teaminvest is watching most closely this reporting season, and why the 18th of August is circled on the calendar. If you've ever wondered whether you need exposure to every sector, or whether a few outstanding businesses held patiently will do the heavy lifting, this is the episode. Segment outline •   00:00 — Do sectors matter, or only businesses? •   03:01 — The patient investor's case for ignoring labels •   05:41 — What ETFs solve — and what they average away •   11:02 — “A lot more data on losers”: the case for kicking out the dogs •   16:52 — Head to head on real ASX businesses •   21:20 — Fishing in the small pond with the best fish •   29:50 — Do it yourself, do it with a team, or get advice •   31:32 — Viewer Q&A: the result Teaminvest is watching this reporting season   Subscribe, leave a review, and send your questions to wealthy@ausbiz.com.au. Your winning stock could be your biggest risk | Wealthy + Wise Ep 26

Every portfolio drifts. Winners grow into an outsized share of what you own, and losers quietly shrink away — so at what point does that drift become a risk worth managing? In this episode of Wealthy + Wise, Howard Coleman and David Lane (Focus Partners Australia) sit down to work through portfolio rebalancing: what it is, when value investors reach for it, and why the answer is rarely as simple as "sell what's gone up." They walk through two scenarios every long-term investor eventually faces — a quality business that's grown to 30–50% of a portfolio, and the opposite case, where a former high-flyer has sold off and now looks better value. Along the way: why knowing fewer companies well beats following thousands loosely, why a quarterly review doesn't have to mean quarterly changes, and a candid answer to a viewer's question about buying into reporting season. Small Caps Under the Microscope | Wealthy + Wise Ep25

What actually separates a genuine small-cap opportunity from a hyped-up story stock? This week, host Nadine Blayney is joined by Sanjee Narendran (Teaminvest) and Nick Cummings (InvestSmart) to apply a disciplined, value-based lens to the smaller end of the ASX. The conversation starts with the fundamentals: why management alignment and incentive design matter even more in small caps, how to spot an overly promotional presentation, why capital raisings and dilution deserve scrutiny, and why a credible path to profitability beats a promised one. Then it's Head to Head: five small caps — Judo Bank, Cuscal, Guzman & Gomez, Hansen Technologies and XRF Scientific — are assessed one by one against the same framework. Some hold up. Some don't. The reasoning behind each call is the real value of the segment. Segments & Key Moments ●      00:00 — Welcome and episode introduction ●      00:00–14:47 — What value investors look for in small caps: management, incentives, presentations, dilution, profitability, dividends and sector considerations ●      15:35 — Head to Head begins: five small caps under the microscope ●      15:35 — Judo Bank (JDO) ●      18:15 — Cuscal (CCL) ●      23:37 — Guzman & Gomez (GYG) ●      26:44 — Hansen Technologies (HSN) ●      29:17 — XRF Scientific (XRF) ●      36:20 — Wrap-up and close Subscribe, leave a review, and send your questions to info@teaminvest.com.au. Invert, Always Invert: Finding the Risks Great Investors Miss | Wealthy+Wise Ep24

Most investors spend their time asking one question: what should I buy? Charlie Munger thought there was a better one — what should I avoid? This week, Howard Coleman (Team Invest) and Mark Humphrey-Jenner (University of New South Wales) sit down to explore inversion: the discipline of deliberately asking what could go wrong before asking what could go right. Howard and Mark unpack why humans default to first-order thinking, how the Team Invest process scores risks for likelihood and impact, and why an IPO is best read as a marketing document rather than an opportunity. They also draw a careful parallel between today's AI enthusiasm and past technology cycles — without dismissing AI outright, since some of it will make genuine money and some of it won't. In the second half, Howard puts four familiar ASX names through the inversion test: Cochlear's capital allocation missteps, ProMedicus's price-to-earnings blowout, QBE's insurance economics, and NEXTDC's capital-intensive, low-moat business model. Wonderful businesses, in some cases — but wonderful businesses bought at the wrong price, or run by the wrong capital allocators, can still be poor investments. SEGMENT OUTLINE 00:00 – Welcome and introducing inversion 03:20 – Second-order thinking, portfolio optimisation, and budgeting 06:17 – Emotion, confirmation bias, and market cycles 09:58 – IPOs as marketing documents 11:16 – Inversion across asset classes, and the AI parallel 14:55 – Why value investors aren't pessimists 21:16 – Stock case studies: Cochlear, ProMedicus, QBE, NEXTDC 29:41 – Wrap-up Subscribe, leave a review, and send your questions to info@teaminvest.com.au.
