Part 2: Autism and ABA: What It Is, What It Isn’t, Building Skills That Matter in Real Life with Dr. Mike Marroquin, BCBA-D

In this episode of Emotionally Wealthy, Karen Conlon continues her two-part conversation on autism with Board Certified Behavior Analyst Dr. Mike Marroquin. Together, they take a closer look at what ABA is, what it isn’t, and how parents can think more carefully about the therapy and providers they choose. Rather than treating ABA as a one-size-fits-all approach, Dr. Mike explains how the goals should come from the skills a child or family actually needs. Whether that means learning to communicate where something hurts, developing social skills, expanding food choices, or learning when to let something go, the focus is on teaching skills that can be used in everyday life. The conversation also looks at what parents should expect from a potential provider. Dr. Mike encourages families to ask about experience, request a resume, meet the RBT who will be working directly with their child, and ask why particular strategies are being used. He also shares why therapy should be enjoyable for the child, the family, and the therapist, and why a good therapist should ultimately be working toward making themselves less necessary. For families navigating autism services, this conversation offers practical ways to ask better questions, observe what is happening around a child’s behavior, and become more involved in the process. In this episode, we discuss: What ABA actually is and why discrete trial teaching is only one ABA techniqueHow ABA goals can be shaped around the needs of each child and familyWhy teaching skills is different from simply trying to change behaviorHow practical skills can help children communicate their needs more effectivelyQuestions parents can ask about a provider’s experience and trainingWhy parents should also get to know and interview the RBT working with their childWhat a first meeting with a potential provider can reveal about fit and expectationsWhy therapy should feel enjoyable for the child, family, and therapistHow parents can ask “why” and understand the strategies being usedWhy good therapy should help children and families become less dependent on the therapist This episode is for you if you've ever wondered: How do I know whether an ABA provider is a good fit for my child and family? What questions should I ask before choosing an ABA therapist? How do I know whether the goals being taught actually make sense for my child? What should therapy look and feel like for my child? How can I better understand what happens before and after a difficult behavior? How can I become more involved in supporting what my child is learning? What can I do if I’m concerned about a developmental milestone? One of the central ideas in this conversation is that supporting a child isn’t only about the child. The family, caregivers, teachers, therapists, and others who spend time with that child are all part of the environment around them. Part 1: When Your Child Has Autism: Helping the Whole Family Understand, Adapt, and Connect with Dr. Mike Marroquin, BCBA-D

This episode is part 1 of a two-part series. When a child has autism, the learning isn't only happening for the child. Parents and families often have to learn new ways of understanding behavior, communication, routines, and everyday experiences. In Part 1 of this two-part conversation, Karen Conlon sits down with Board-Certified Behavior Analyst Dr. Mike Marroquin to explore what can happen when parents look beyond the behavior and begin to understand what a child may be experiencing. Mike brings more than 20 years of experience working with children with autism and other behavioral challenges across home, school, and community settings. Together, Karen and Mike talk about behavior as communication, the role of language in helping children express their needs, and why there isn't one experience of autism or one approach that works for every child. The conversation also looks at the ways families can unintentionally adapt their entire lives around avoiding difficult situations. While those changes may make things easier in the moment, they can also reduce a child's opportunities to practice and develop new skills. Mike shares examples from his work with families that illustrate why parents may need to become observers rather than constantly reacting, and why helping the child often begins with helping the adults learn new skills as well. This conversation is for parents, family members, and professionals who want to better understand autism without reducing a child to their behavior or diagnosis. It also offers a reminder that supporting a child does not mean making every difficult experience disappear. Sometimes, it means helping them learn how to navigate experiences that are difficult. In this episode, we discuss: Why behavior may communicate a need when a child does not yet have the language to express itHow sensory experiences, transitions, routines, and unpredictability can affect a child's behaviorWhy parents may need to understand the child's experience before reacting to the behaviorThe difference between observing behavior and assuming what a child is feeling internallyHow families can unintentionally make a child's comfort zone smaller by avoiding difficult situationsWhy children with autism may need different approaches from strategies that worked with their siblingsWhat parents should consider when developmental milestones or language development raise concernsWhy early evaluation and support can matter when a child is struggling with language or daily skillsHow parents and children both continue learning and adapting as the child growsWhy extended family and support systems may also need education and a shared understanding This episode is for you if you've ever wondered: How can I understand what my child's behavior is trying to communicate? How do I know when I'm helping my child and when I'm unintentionally avoiding a challenge for them? What might my child be experiencing that they don't yet have the language to explain? How can I respond differently when behavior looks like refusal, defiance, or a tantrum? What should I do if my child isn't meeting expected developmental or language milestones? How can I help my family understand and respond to autism more consistently? How do I support my child without making their world smaller? One of the central ideas in this conversation is that supporting a child with autism is not simply about changing the child's behavior. It is also about helping parents, siblings, and other caregivers learn to observe, understand, adapt, and teach in ways that meet the child where they are. There isn't one experience of autism, and there isn't one path that every family will follow. What can make a difference is continuing to learn about the child in front of you while helping them build the skills they need to participate more fully in everyday life. The Needs Beneath Your Parenting Struggles with Jen Lumanlan, M.S., M.Ed.

In this episode of Emotionally Wealthy, we're joined by parenting researcher and coach Jen Lumanlan, M.S., M.Ed., host of Your Parenting Mojo and author of Parenting Beyond Power, for an honest conversation about children's behavior, parental triggers, and what happens when we look beneath the behavior instead of simply trying to stop it. Parenting can bring up some of our strongest emotional reactions. A child refuses to cooperate, melts down, pushes back, or repeatedly does something we've asked them not to do, and suddenly our response feels much bigger than the moment. This episode invites us to consider that the behavior may be communicating something important about what our child needs, whether that's connection, autonomy, movement, sensory support, or simply the experience of being heard and understood. We also explore how our own childhood experiences can shape the way we interpret our children's behavior. Sometimes what feels like a frustrating or defiant behavior in our child is touching an old pattern in us. Jen shares how early experiences around emotional expression and having her needs heard influenced her understanding of relationships, and how that awareness has informed the way she parents today. This conversation is especially relevant for parents and caregivers who find themselves repeatedly triggered by age-appropriate behavior. Together, we look at how curiosity can create more flexibility, how parents and children can work toward meeting both of their needs, and how repairing after conflict can strengthen a relationship rather than define it. In this episode, we discuss: The difference between a child's need and the strategy they're using to meet itWhy behavior that looks defiant may actually be an attempt to meet a needHow connection, autonomy, movement, and sensory needs can show up through behaviorWhy our children's behavior can activate patterns rooted in our own childhoodsHow recognizing a child's need can change the way we respondFinding creative solutions that meet both the parent's and child's needsWhy parental openness and curiosity create more flexibility in difficult momentsHow the pressures accumulating throughout the day can affect both parents and childrenWhy conflict is inevitable in relationships and how repair can strengthen connectionWhat emotional wealth can look like when both people’s needs matter This episode is for you if you've ever wondered: Why does my child's behavior trigger such a strong reaction in me?How can I tell what my child actually needs beneath the behavior?Am I being too permissive if I try to understand the need behind the behavior? Why does the same behavior keep becoming a source of conflict? How can I honor my child's needs without ignoring my own? What can I do when I realize I'm already triggered? Is there a different way to respond when my child's behavior brings up something old in me? Once we understand what the child is trying to accomplish, we may be able to find another strategy that works for both of us. 00:00 Introduction to Emotional Responses in Parenting 02:17 Understanding Emotional Expression and Needs 09:55 The Parent-Child Dynamic: Needs and Strategies 13:08 Exploring Universal Human Needs 15:39 The Importance of Early Emotional Awareness 26:53 Navigating Expectations in Child Development 30:42 Understanding Shame in Parenting 35:49 Navigating Emotional Dysregulation 50:15 Building Empathy and Connection 57:26 Defining Emotional Wealth Resources & Links Website www.karenconlon.com Book Karen as a Podcast Guest www.talks.co/karen-conlon-lcsw Apply to Be a Guest Expert or Live Coaching Guest www.karenconlon.com/become-a-podcast-guest Review the Podcast www.podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/id1814244500?action=write-review Grab Your Free Guide 5 Steps to Powerful Self-Awareness and More Authentic Connections www.karenconlon.com/freebie Books & Workbooks The Teenager’s Guide to Adulting Skills and Life Hacks www.amazon.com/dp/B0CQGHHT6L Manage Your Anxiety Workbook & Journal www.amazon.com/dp/B0F5FW5Q2J Connect With Karen Instagram: www.instagram.com/karen_conlon_lcsw Facebook: www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61559407463659 LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/karenconlonlcsw Threads: www.threads.com/@karen_conlon_lcsw Substack: www.karenconlon.substack.com Tune in to the Emotionally Wealthy Podcast on Your Preferred Platform Apple Podcasts: www.podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/emotionally-wealthy/id1814244500 Spotify: www.open.spotify.com/show/1BxaZasAk68BD5mRkD59cI?si=b406d5735eae4304 iHeart: www.iheart.com/podcast/269-emotionally-wealthy-321235964 YouTube: www.youtube.com/channel/UCy-yaUREWiHBJNxwze7zI4w Connect with Jen Lumanlan, M.S., M.Ed.: Website: www.yourparentingmojo.com Instagram: www.instagram.com/yourparentingmojo Facebook: www.facebook.com/YourParentingMojo Tools for Parents from Jen: Free quizzes: Find your child's most important need and explore some of the reasons you may get angry with your kids: www.go.yourparentingmojo.com/tl/313 Self-Paced Masterclass: Why You're So Angry With Your Child's Age-Appropriate Behavior (And What to Do About It) ($27). Raising Emotionally Strong Teens: The Skills They Need and How Parents Can Help

In this episode of Emotionally Wealthy, Karen Conlon explores what it means to raise emotionally strong teens while also giving them the space to become more independent. As teenagers learn how to manage emotions, communicate what they need, handle disappointment, and make decisions, parents are learning something too: how to stay close without always stepping in to fix. Adolescence can hold two seemingly opposite needs at once. Teens want more freedom, while still needing to know that someone has their back. Karen looks at why this tension is not necessarily inconsistency or defiance, but a central part of growing up. The small ways teens learn to handle difficult moments can gradually build both their confidence and their parents' trust. The episode also explores what can happen when difficult feelings are pushed aside. Karen shares examples from her book, The Teenager's Guide to Adulting Skills and Life Hacks, including teens navigating heartbreak, disappointment, comparison, self-image, and anxious thought patterns. Rather than expecting teens to simply "get over" difficult emotions, she focuses on helping them notice, name, and work through what they are experiencing. For parents, this episode offers practical ways to respond when a teen is struggling, including the simple question, "Do you want me to just listen right now, or do you want my advice?" Sometimes the most supportive thing we can do is pause long enough to find out what our teenager actually needs from us. In this episode, we discuss: Why independence and needing parental support can exist at the same timeHow small life skills can gradually build confidence and trustWhy difficult emotions may show up later as irritability, withdrawal, or changes in behaviorUsing the Stop and Reflect Method to better understand emotionsHow disappointment can become an opportunity to learn rather than a definition of failureWhy asking for help is a sign of strengthHow comparison can turn feelings into beliefs about ourselvesHelping teens question anxious thoughts instead of automatically believing themWhy parents sometimes need to listen before offering solutionsHow small, consistent conversations can strengthen communication over time This episode is for you if you've ever wondered: Why does my teenager want independence but still need me so much?Is my teen shutting me out, or do they simply need something different from me?How can I help my teenager process disappointment without trying to fix it?What might be underneath a sudden change in my teen's behavior? How can I help my teen recognize when their thoughts aren't telling the whole story? When should I listen, and when should I offer advice? How can I support my teen without taking over? Raising an emotionally strong teenager doesn't mean raising a teenager who never struggles. It means helping them develop the ability to move through difficult feelings, make mistakes, ask for help, and gradually discover that they can handle hard things. If this conversation resonates with you, share it with someone who may need to hear it. 5 Steps to Self-Awareness: How to Notice and Change the Patterns Shaping Your Relationships

Free E-Guide: 5 Steps to Powerful Self-Awareness & More Authentic Connections In this solo episode of Emotionally Wealthy, Karen Conlon takes a deeper look at the emotional patterns that shape our relationships and why being capable, successful, and self-aware doesn't always mean we feel truly seen, understood, or connected. Drawing from her own experiences as well as years of working with clients, Karen walks through five practical steps for developing greater self-awareness and creating more authentic, emotionally fulfilling relationships. She explores the protective patterns we develop early in life, the beliefs that quietly influence our behavior, and the unmet needs that can sit underneath our strongest emotional reactions. This episode is an invitation to slow down, become curious about yourself, and move from reacting automatically to responding intentionally. Karen offers simple reflection questions and action steps you can begin practicing right away, including journaling, identifying limiting beliefs, building emotional clarity, and learning to listen without immediately preparing your response. Whether you tend to over-function, people-please, fix, avoid, shut down, or simply feel like you're carrying more emotional responsibility than you'd like, this conversation offers a practical starting point for understanding yourself more deeply and creating relationships where you can feel genuinely valued and heard. In this episode, we discuss: Why you can't change emotional patterns you haven't learned to recognizeHow protective behaviors from childhood can continue showing up in adult relationshipsWhy overreacting, withdrawing, fixing, and over-functioning may be connected to unmet emotional needsHow to explore the deeper "why" behind your reactionsThe self-limiting beliefs that quietly influence how we see ourselves and our relationshipsHow to question inherited beliefs about worth, productivity, perfectionism, and being "enough"Why emotional clarity requires going deeper than simply labeling yourself angry or stressedHow to express difficult emotions with greater clarity, compassion, and careWhy mindful listening can reduce defensiveness and create greater emotional safetyPractical ways to listen without planning your response and reflect back what you've heard This episode is for you if you've ever wondered: Why do I keep reacting the same way even when I know better? Why do I feel like I have to do everything for everyone to feel valued? What unmet need might be underneath my strongest emotional reactions?Where did some of my beliefs about myself actually come from? How can I stop letting perfectionism, people-pleasing, or over-functioning run my life? Why is it so difficult for me to express what I need? How can I communicate without becoming defensive or shutting down? What would change if I became more curious about my own patterns instead of criticizing myself? Self-awareness isn't about finding everything that's "wrong" with you. It's about becoming curious enough to understand what is happening underneath your reactions. When you can see your patterns, understand your needs, challenge the beliefs that no longer serve you, express your emotions with greater clarity, and truly listen, you create the possibility for relationships that feel more authentic, mutual, and emotionally fulfilling. You don't have to change everything at once. Start by noticing. Start by asking better questions. Start by listening to yourself with the same compassion you would offer someone you love. 00:00 Introduction to Self-Awareness and Relationship Patterns 05:48 Step 1: Become Aware Of Your Patterns 11:14 Step 2: Explore Your Why 16:41 Step 3: Identify Your Limiting Beliefs 27:20 Step 4: Practice Emotional Clarity 32:24 Step 5: Cultivate Listening Skills With Mindfulness 38:07 Closing and Takeaways Resources & Links Website www.karenconlon.com Book Karen as a Podcast Guest www.talks.co/karen-conlon-lcsw Apply to Be a Guest Expert or Live Coaching Guest www.karenconlon.com/become-a-podcast-guest Review the Podcast www.podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/id1814244500?action=write-review Grab Your Free Guide 5 Steps to Powerful Self-Awareness and More Authentic Connections www.karenconlon.com/freebie Books & Workbooks The Teenager’s Guide to Adulting Skills and Life Hacks www.amazon.com/dp/B0CQGHHT6L Manage Your Anxiety Workbook & Journal www.amazon.com/dp/B0F5FW5Q2J Connect With Karen Instagram: www.instagram.com/karen_conlon_lcsw Facebook: www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61559407463659 LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/karenconlonlcsw Threads: www.threads.com/@karen_conlon_lcsw Substack: www.karenconlon.substack.com Tune in to the Emotionally Wealthy Podcast on Your Preferred Platform Apple Podcasts: www.podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/emotionally-wealthy/id1814244500 Spotify: www.open.spotify.com/show/1BxaZasAk68BD5mRkD59cI?si=b406d5735eae4304 Post-production is handled by the Buzzspear team: www.buzzspear.com

When Your Past Joins The Conversation with Keith Greer, LCSW

In this episode of Emotionally Wealthy, we're joined by executive coach, neuroscience-based communication expert, and host of the Helping Conversations podcast, Keith Greer, LCSW, PCC, for a thoughtful conversation about why our most difficult conversations often have very little to do with the present moment. Together, we explore how childhood experiences shape the way we interpret other people, why our past quietly walks into our relationships, and how projection, emotional reactivity, and unconscious expectations influence the conversations we have at home, at work, and with the people we love most. We also discuss why communication isn't simply about finding the right words. It's about creating enough trust and psychological safety for people to feel seen, heard, and understood. Keith shares practical strategies for approaching difficult conversations with greater curiosity, emotional awareness, and compassion, helping us move away from defensiveness and toward genuine connection. Whether you're navigating conflict with a partner, parenting a teenager, leading a team, or simply trying to understand why certain people trigger such strong emotional reactions, this conversation offers practical insight that can transform the way you communicate. In this episode, we discuss: Why your past often "joins the conversation" without you realizing itHow childhood experiences shape trust, communication, and emotional safetyWhat projection really is and why it's so difficult to recognize in ourselvesThe role of psychological safety in healthier relationships, families, and workplacesWhy curiosity is one of the most powerful communication skills we can developHow emotional reactivity shuts down connection and meaningful dialogueWhy listening to understand is more effective than listening to convinceHow leaders, parents, and partners can create conversations built on trust instead of fearPractical ways to pause, regulate your emotions, and respond more intentionally during conflict This episode is for you if you've ever wondered: Why do certain people trigger such intense emotional reactions in me?Am I responding to what's happening now or to something from my past? How can I have difficult conversations without becoming defensive? Why do the same communication patterns keep repeating in my relationships? What does psychological safety actually look like in everyday life? How can curiosity help me build stronger, healthier connections? Healing isn't just about changing what you say. It's about understanding the experiences, beliefs, and emotional patterns that shape how you listen, react, and connect with others. The more aware you become of the stories your past brings into today's conversations, the more freedom you have to choose a different response and create relationships built on trust instead of fear. 00:00 Understanding Emotional Reactions in Conversations 02:02 The Impact of Early Experiences on Communication 05:32 Exploring Psychological Safety in Relationships 06:22 The Role of Projection in Communication 13:07 Self-Awareness and Its Challenges 18:43 Recognizing Patterns in Emotional Responses 22:24 The Impact of Fatigue on Self-Awareness 23:20 Understanding Trust: Building and Repairing Relationships 24:06 The Complexity of Trust in Conversations 26:12 Creating Trust and Safety Agreements 27:56 Navigating Difficult Conversations 32:25 Self-Awareness in Leadership 35:19 Emotional Safety in Communication 42:34 Misunderstandings in Conversations 44:52 The Power of Curiosity in Conversations 51:02 Neuroscience and Emotional Safety in Communication 57:00 Practical Strategies for Difficult Conversations 01:02:15 Defining Emotional Wealth Resources & Links Website https://karenconlon.com/ Book Karen as a Podcast Guest https://talks.co/karen-conlon-lcsw Apply to Be a Guest Expert or Live Coaching Guest https://karenconlon.com/become-a-podcast-guest Review the Podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/id1814244500?action=write-review Grab Your Free Guide 5 Steps to Powerful Self-Awareness and More Authentic Connections https://karenconlon.com/freebie Books & Workbooks The Teenager’s Guide to Adulting Skills and Life Hacks https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CQGHHT6L Manage Your Anxiety Workbook & Journal https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0F5FW5Q2J Connect With Karen Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/karen_conlon_lcsw/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61559407463659 LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/karenconlonlcsw/ Threads: https://www.threads.com/@karen_conlon_lcsw Substack: https://karenconlon.substack.com/ Tune in to the Emotionally Wealthy Podcast on Your Preferred Platform Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/emotionally-wealthy/id1814244500 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1BxaZasAk68BD5mRkD59cI?si=b406d5735eae4304/ Connect with Keith Greer, LCSW: Website: https://keithgreercoaching.com Instagram: http://instagram.com/keithgreercoaching LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/keith-greer-l-c-s-w-p-c-c-81256a130/ Post-production are handled by the Buzzspear team. https://www.buzzspear.com/

From Survival to Self-Awareness: The Reckoning That Changed Everything with Lauren Wu, Esq.

In this episode of Emotionally Wealthy, we're joined by former healthcare privacy attorney, keynote speaker, and leadership expert Lauren Wu, Esq., for a powerful conversation about childhood trauma, generational patterns, achievement, and what it truly takes to heal from the experiences that shaped us. Together, we explore how growing up in a home impacted by abuse, alcoholism, and secrecy influenced Lauren's identity, relationships, and relentless drive to succeed. She shares how professional success became both a source of empowerment and a form of protection, why unresolved trauma often follows us into adulthood, and how breaking generational cycles requires far more than simply understanding where they began. We also discuss the profound impact of chronic stress on the body, how a life-threatening pulmonary embolism forced Lauren to reexamine her priorities, and why healing isn't about erasing the past; it's about choosing a different path for yourself and the next generation. Whether you're carrying invisible wounds from childhood, striving for success while silently struggling, or working to create healthier relationships and family dynamics, this conversation offers hope, insight, and practical wisdom for living with greater intention. In this episode, we discuss: How childhood abuse, family alcoholism, and secrecy shape identity well into adulthoodWhy achievement and success can become both empowerment and emotional armorThe survival patterns that quietly follow us into our careers, marriages, and parentingHow trauma influences the relationships we choose and how awareness can interrupt those cyclesThe role of accountability, communication, and repair in creating healthier family dynamicsWhy chronic stress and unresolved trauma often manifest in physical healthWhat Lauren's life-threatening pulmonary embolism taught her about slowing down, healing, and redefining successHow empathy and self-awareness help us raise emotionally healthier childrenWhy breaking generational cycles requires intentional choices every single day This episode is for you if you've ever wondered: Why do I feel like I always have to prove my worth through achievement? How do childhood experiences continue to affect my relationships as an adult? Why do I keep repeating patterns I promised myself I'd never recreate? Can I have compassion for my parents while still protecting myself? How do I stop surviving and start truly living? What does breaking generational cycles actually look like in everyday life? Healing isn't about pretending the past didn't happen. It's about understanding how your experiences shaped you without allowing them to define your future. Every intentional choice you make to communicate differently, to set healthier boundaries, to seek support, and to lead with greater awareness has the power to change not only your own life, but the generations that follow. When Trauma Looks Like Competence and How to Reconnect With Yourself with Dr. Claire Dowdle Cina

In this episode of Emotionally Wealthy, we're joined by Stanford-trained clinical psychologist, trauma and attachment specialist, and founder of Eminent Mental Wellness, Dr. Claire Dowdle Cina, for an honest conversation about perfectionism, people-pleasing, attachment, and the hidden survival strategies that quietly shape our lives. Together, we explore how childhood experiences influence the way we approach achievement, relationships, and self-worth. Dr. Claire shares why many of the qualities our culture celebrates perfectionism, over-functioning, hyper-independence, and relentless productivity often begin as protective adaptations rather than personality traits. We also discuss how those same patterns can leave us feeling disconnected from ourselves, burned out, and unsure of what we truly want. Whether you're struggling with perfectionism, navigating relationship patterns that keep repeating, or simply wondering why it's so difficult to slow down and trust yourself, this conversation offers practical insight, self-compassion, and a hopeful path toward lasting emotional healing. In this episode, we discuss: How childhood trauma and attachment experiences shape adult relationshipsWhy perfectionism, overachievement, and hyper-independence often begin as survival strategiesThe difference between functioning well and truly feeling aligned with yourselfHow to recognize when achievement is being driven by fear instead of purposeWhy self-compassion is essential for healing and doesn't mean lowering your standardsHow secure attachment creates healthier, more fulfilling relationshipsThe connection between nervous system regulation, emotional resilience, and authentic connectionWhy healing requires curiosity, flexibility, and learning to trust yourself againHow unresolved trauma influences the partners we choose and the roles we take on in relationshipsWhy your healing journey can become one of your greatest strengths This episode is for you if you've ever wondered: Why do I always feel like I have to earn love or prove my worth?Am I driven by genuine ambition or by survival? Why do I keep repeating the same relationship patterns? How do I know what I truly want after years of putting everyone else first? Is it possible to heal insecure attachment and build healthier relationships? What does self-compassion actually look like without losing motivation? Healing isn't about becoming someone different. It's about peeling back the survival strategies that once protected you so you can reconnect with the person you've always been. When you learn to trust yourself, regulate your emotions, and choose relationships from a place of security instead of fear, everything begins to change. 00:00 –Trailer 01:15 – Introduction: Dr. Claire Dowdle-Cina 01:59 – Welcome to Emotionally Wealthy 02:34 – The early messages and experiences that shaped Claire before her career in psychology 04:38 – How our most-praised traits often started as protection 06:39 – Noticing when old survival patterns start to feel uncomfortable 11:05 – Learning to articulate needs and communicate directly instead of avoiding conflict 15:20 – Switching gears: perfectionism and achievement as survival strategies 18:39 – Telling the difference between genuine ambition and survival-mode striving 21:35 – "Is this the mountain you actually want to climb?" — alignment vs. obligation 23:45 – Practicing self-compassion and changing how you talk to yourself 31:35 – How early attachment shapes the partners and relationship patterns we're drawn to 35:04 – What secure attachment really is (vs. chemistry, intensity, or familiarity) 38:54 – Building a secure "home base" even if you didn't grow up with one 44:45 – Recognizing relationship patterns that don't serve you, and putting yourself above the relationship 48:45 – Coaching women to break toxic relationship patterns and stop earning love through adapting 53:07 – Redefining trauma — how healing work becomes a "superpower" 58:50 – Final question: how Claire defines emotional wealth 1:00:32 – How to reach Dr. Claire Dowdle-Cina Resources & Links Website https://karenconlon.com/ Book Karen as a Podcast Guest https://talks.co/karen-conlon-lcsw Apply to Be a Guest Expert or Live Coaching Guest https://karenconlon.com/become-a-podcast-guest Review the Podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/id1814244500?action=write-review Grab Your Free Guide 5 Steps to Powerful Self-Awareness and More Authentic Connections https://karenconlon.com/freebie Books & Workbooks The Teenager’s Guide to Adulting Skills and Life Hacks https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CQGHHT6L Manage Your Anxiety Workbook & Journal https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0F5FW5Q2J Connect With Karen Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/karen_conlon_lcsw/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61559407463659 LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/karenconlonlcsw/ Threads: https://www.threads.com/@karen_conlon_lcsw Substack: https://karenconlon.substack.com/ Tune in to the Emotionally Wealthy Podcast On Your Preferred Platform Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/emotionally-wealthy/id1814244500 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1BxaZasAk68BD5mRkD59cI?si=b406d5735eae4304 Connect with Dr. Claire Dowdle Cina: Website: https://clairedowdlecina.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/clairedowdlecina Post-production are handled by the Buzzspear team. https://www.buzzspear.com/
