The Man Who Wrote His Own Death | Season 3: The Divine Professor

Thomas Neale knew he would die. What makes his story remarkable is that he wrote the words that would be placed on his own memorial while he was still alive. In the first episode of Legacy Lore: The Divine Professor, we travel to sixteenth century England to meet Thomas Neale, an Oxford scholar, theologian, translator, and future Regius Professor of Hebrew. He lived through the reigns of Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I, and Elizabeth I, as England's religious world changed around him. From his education at Winchester College and New College, Oxford, to his study of Greek and Hebrew and the mysterious years that took him to Paris, Thomas's story raises more questions than it answers. And at the end of his life, his own words give us one final clue about the man behind the records. This is the story of Thomas Neale, and the beginning of a journey through the records, history, and unanswered questions surrounding his life. Sources & Further Reading I have collected the sources, historical documents, and additional research used for this episode on the Legacy Lore website. From Records to Story: The Storyfinders Workbook is the same process I use to take the records I uncover and turn them into the stories you hear here on Legacy Lore. It walks you through how to move beyond names and dates, dig deeper into the records, add historical context, and build a story from the evidence you actually have.

Between the Seasons: Beyond Columbus | Andrew Rowen on History, Primary Sources & the Taíno

In this Between the Seasons episode of Legacy Lore, Sammy Jo sits down with author Andrew Rowen, whose Retold series reconstructs the early encounters between Europeans and the Taíno people from both European and Indigenous perspectives. We discuss Andrew’s latest book, Isabel, Anacaona & Columbus’s Demise: 1498–1502 Retold, and why the years 1498–1502 were such a pivotal period in Caribbean and colonial history. Andrew shares how he works with primary sources, anthropological research, archaeology, and historical scholarship to reconstruct events when the surviving records were largely written by European chroniclers. We talk about how to identify bias without throwing out a source entirely, how historians approach gaps and silences in the record, and why sometimes the most responsible historical conclusion is simply that we don't know. We also explore the history of Anacaona and the Taíno people, Christopher Columbus, Queen Isabel, historical myths, Indigenous resistance, and the challenge of separating what the evidence supports from what later generations have assumed. For genealogists, family historians, and anyone researching the past, this conversation also offers a valuable look at how to turn historical records into stories while remaining honest about what the evidence can (and cannot) tell us. Learn more about Andrew Rowen and the Retold series:Andrew Rowen's website Andrew Rowen's latest book, Isabel, Anacaona & Columbus's Demise: 1498–1502 Retold, is available through booksellers. The book is the third installment in his chronological Retold series, following Encounters Unforeseen: 1492 Retold and Columbus and Caonabó: 1493–1498 Retold.

Between the Seasons: A Look at Into the Records + Upcoming Updates

Did pirates really attack the mysterious brig found drifting off the North Carolina coast in 1825? Or did a newspaper simply reach the wrong conclusion? In this special update from Legacy Lore: True Crime + Ancestral Secrets, I'm sharing how our newest research series, Into the Record, is changing the way we explore history. Our First Case Our first case begins with a chilling 1825 newspaper article describing sixteen bodies washing ashore between Cape Henry and Cape Hatteras, an abandoned merchant brig carrying pork, flour, tobacco, and cotton, and a community convinced pirates were responsible. The Inner Circle Each month inside The Inner Circle on Patreon, we're working through original records, historical newspapers, maps, and primary sources together to answer one question at a time. This month's investigation explores Caribbean piracy in 1824–1825 and asks whether the evidence truly supports the newspaper's claim. Our next question may be the most important yet: Can we reconstruct the final voyage of this mysterious brig? If you love genealogy, historical mysteries, maritime history, or learning how historians actually conduct research, I'd love to invite you to join us inside The Inner Circle. Members receive a new Into the Record investigation every month, early access to Legacy Lore: True Crime + Ancestral Secrets seasonal episodes, original source documents, research notes, and a collaborative space where we compare discoveries and follow new leads together.
