Emperor Norton : Self-Appointed Emperor of the United States - Urban Legend #4

Send us Fan Mail Emperor Norton: The Self-Appointed Emperor of the United States  Joshua A. Norton, a bankrupt San Francisco merchant, proclaimed himself Emperor of the United States in 1859. Here is how the city treated him and why the legend lasts. ## What You'll Learn - Joshua A. Norton's 1859 proclamation as Emperor of the United States was published by a newspaper. - San Franciscans often treated him with kindness, not mockery. - Emperor was a self-given title, much as the money he printed. ## Key Claims - Some local businesses reportedly accepted Norton's self-issued currency, though it was never legal tender. - His 1867 arrest drew public protest and an apology from the police chief. - Funeral attendance figures vary but were reported to be in the thousands. ## Sources - An Egregious Affront to the Emperor - Celebrate California -https://celebratecalifornia.library.ca.gov/january-21-1867-an-egregious-affront-to-the-emperor-2/ - Reports arrest’s initial vagrancy charge, later lunacy charge, meals, theater seats and chief’s apology. Cemetery march and final respects. Note that it is explanatory material and repeats some conventional details, not an original police docket.  - The Life & Legend of Emperor Norton  https://emperornortontrust.org/emperor/life - A research biography that reproduces the proclamation, “printing and selling his own scrip”, wore “hand me down” union and confederate uniforms and new uniforms bought by San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Police officer/security office Armand Barbier arrested Joshua Norton and charged him with vagrancy, then lunacy  - American Historical Association https://www.historians.org/perspectives-article/the-unselfish-ruler-norton-i-emperor-of-the-united-states-december-2023/ - Discusses the September 17, 1859 proclamation delivered to and published by the Daily Evening Bulletin. Issued his own “currency.” The Protest, release, and Chief Patrick Crowley’s apology for the arrest. Describes over 10,000 funeral attendees without distinguishing viewing from burial.  - Norton I, Emperor of the United States  https://sfmuseum.org/hist1/norton.html - Credited to Hansen’s 1995 Almanac. | Proclamation, Armand Barbier arrest date, Patrol Special status, Crowley, death. | Conflates Protector of Mexico with 1859 emperorship; treats two-mile cortege/10,000 funeral attendance as simple facts  [It’s definitely NOT lost on me that today the world gets to hear some of the final outcomes of the United States mid-Presidential-term elections. In my adult life, there has been gross and despicable things that politicians have done and been caught doing to the masses. This extends to the the insanely callous and egregious treatment of Jews by the Pope before, during and after World War 2 and by the President of the USA at the time of WWII. There are frightening statements being made and actions being taken that affect us all. However, those things NOT being said and actions NOT being taken, frighten me most and have me concerned about the world that Toots is growing-up in. As a parent, I will do my part to raise a curious, kind and socially-minded soul, but who will take on those misbehaving adults who claim to stand for you and I. Okay, I am off my podium and insanely fatigued. And, it doesn’t mean that my weary body and soul are incorrect here. Heaven help us and keep the Kind from evildoers. Operation Mincemeat: The Corpse That Conquered the Third Reich - Urban Legend #3

Send us Fan Mail   Operation Mincemeat: The Corpse That Conquered the Third Reich - Urban Legend #3  Operation Mincemeat used a dead man and forged papers to mislead Nazi planners before the 1943 invasion of Sicily. Hear how the plot worked and what it did and did not achieve. ## What You'll Learn - During World War II, British intelligence officers Ewen Montagu and Charles Cholmondeley executed Operation Mincemeat, using the corpse of a Welshman named Glyndwr Michael disguised as a Royal Marine officer ("Major William Martin") to plant false invasion documents in Spain. - Adolf Hitler was successfully “duped” by the bogus briefcase and love letters, redirecting crucial units away from Sicily toward Greece and Sardinia. - This elaborate deception significantly reduced Allied casualties during the subsequent invasion of Sicily, proving that a single manufactured narrative can alter the course of military history. ## Key Claims - Mincemeat is widely credited with helping draw German forces toward Greece and Sardinia. - Historians credit it with easing the Sicily invasion; the exact lives saved are unknown. - The Trout Memo's idea #28 of 54 is the usual origin; (James bond creator) Ian Fleming's role in Mincemeat origins . ## Sources - Secret Agents, Secret Armies: Operation Mincemeat | The National WWII Museum https://www.nationalww2museum.org/war/articles/secret-agents-secret-armies-operation-mincemeat - Notes how operation helped 1943 multinational Allied campaign; deceiving Germans, German troop movement from Sicily to Greece, helped “dupe” the Nazis, Operation Husky-invasion of Sicily, Mincemeat origins, the Trout Memo and 54 ways to fake out the enemy, #28 is the basis for Operation Mincemeat. - Imperial War Museum https://www.iwm.org.uk/history/the-war-on-paper-operation-mincemeat — The plot's mechanics: the false documents and the fake officer identity - HISTORY https://www.history.com/articles/what-was-operation-mincemeat - Supports “...saving thousands of Allied soldiers’ lives, Operation Mincemeat helped further Italian leader Benito Mussolini’s downfall and turn the tide of the war towards an Allied victory in Europe.” - Cast of Operation Mincemeat unveil plaque and bench to Welsh hero Glyndwr Michael https://nation.cymru/culture/cast-of-operation-mincemeat-unveil-plaque-and-bench-to-welsh-hero-glyndwr-michael/#:~:text=helped%20pave%20the%20way%20for%20the%20Allied%20invasion - Glyndwr Michael's identity and burial in Spain. - What was Operation Mincemeat? - University of Plymouth https://www.plymouth.ac.uk/discover/what-was-operation-mincemeat - Discusses the Trout Memo, basis for Mincemeat, supports Ian Fleming’s role. [ 11/3/2026 - This was a rough one. I am so dragging. I am not getting the sleep and I need it. Also a rough one for the production side of the audio tonight. Although I am definitely forming a workflow system of sorts, things like "Normalization" and leveling were off. The episode kept clipping. So weird. Gotta just trust my gut sometimes. Night all. That Time Napoleon Was Beaten by Bunnies: Rabbit Hunt Disaster - Urban Legend #2

Send us Fan Mail Did rabbits really chase Napoleon off his own hunting party? Host Joshua Hess retells the famous Napoleon rabbit hunt story from the Treaties of Tilsit era and separates the part that holds up from the part that grew in the retelling. Listen for the story, and for a quick lesson in how a legend gets bigger every time it's repeated. ## What You'll Learn - What the Napoleon rabbit hunt story says happened, and who arranged the hunt - Why tame rabbits behave so differently from wild ones around people - Which details are commonly repeated but poorly documented - Why this was a hunting mishap; not a battle or a defeat ## Key Claims - A rabbit hunt was reportedly arranged for Napoleon around the time of the 1807 Treaties of Tilsit organized by Napoleon's chief of staff, Alexandre Berthier. . - About 3000 tame, farm rabbits accustomed to people feeding them, are said to have rushed toward the hunting party rather than fleeing. - The rabbit swarm climbed Napoleon’s legs, overwhelmed his guards, and forced the Emperor of Europe to retreat to his carriage; further details are likely embellished. - This was an embarrassing hunting-party episode, not a battle. It held no military consequence. ## Sources - A Brief Moment of History: When Napoleon Took on Rabbits https://justhistoryposts.com/2023/01/27/a-brief-moment-of-history-when-napoleon-took-on-rabbits/  - Thiébault, Baron. Australia's Emu War Explained: Did the Birds Really Win? - Urban Legend #1

Send us Fan Mail Urban Legend #1 — Australia's Emu War Explained: Did the Birds Really Win?  In 1932, Australian soldiers with machine guns were sent to deal with thousands of emus damaging farmland in Western Australia. Joshua Hess unpacks the Great Emu War: who asked for help, what the soldiers actually did, and why the popular 'birds beat the army' line is a good story that needs some qualification. This is the first episode of the NaPodPoMo Series: 'What We've Been Getting Wrong.' ## What You'll Learn - Why emus were targeted in Western Australia - How the 1932 operation actually unfolded - Why the 'birds won' version is simplified ## Key Claims - The 1932 operation was real, but calling it a 'war' is a nickname, not an official conflict. Thank goodness the emus don’t hold a grudge. - The 'army lost to birds' line is a popular simplification; outcomes and kill counts are disputed. - Figures like 20,000 emus and about 1,000 killed are estimates that vary by source. ## Sources  1. Oh That’s a Factlet — Random & Curious Trivia · Bonus Episode · International Women’s Day 2026

Send us Fan Mail Episode Summary On March 8th, the world pauses to celebrate International Women’s Day — but most people don’t know how it actually began, or how staggeringly large the invisible economy it points toward really is. In this rapid-fire bonus Factlet, Joshua unpacks the strike that accidentally toppled a 300-year dynasty, puts a hard dollar figure on the world’s most underpaid labor force, and closes with a personal word to the woman behind the work. Episode Highlights The Historical Twist International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8th not because of a summit or a declaration, but because of a strike. On that date in 1917, women textile workers in Petrograd walked off the job demanding “Bread and Peace.” When soldiers ordered to suppress the protest refused and marched with the women instead, the movement became unstoppable. Tsar Nicholas II abdicated seven days later, ending three centuries of Romanov rule. The provisional government that followed granted women the right to vote, making Russia one of the first major powers to do so. The Shadow Economy Stat According to a 2020 Oxfam study (the largest of its kind) women globally perform 12.5 billion hours of unpaid care work every single day. Valued at minimum wage, that labor would be worth $10.8 trillion annually. That’s more than three times the size of the entire global technology industry in case you’re keeping score. Note: The Oxfam “Time to Care” report (2020) uses minimum wage as a floor, which Oxfam itself describes as a conservative underestimate. The real figure is almost certainly higher.
