    36 - The Worst of Humanity: When the Vulnerable Are Preyed Upon

    In this episode, we're talking about something we've both experienced throughout our years working in crime scene investigation: seeing the worst of humanity. Following on from our conversation with Maria Tume, we found ourselves reflecting on some of the cases that have stayed with us over the years — cases involving domestic abuse, child abuse, vulnerable adults, murder, and crimes against elderly and vulnerable people. We talk about the cases that made us angry, the ones that broke our hearts, and the ones that left us struggling to understand how one person could treat another with such cruelty. But this episode isn't just about the worst of humanity. Because alongside the horrific things we've seen, we've also witnessed incredible compassion, kindness and resilience. We talk about the people who cared for others when they were at their most vulnerable, the small things we could do as practitioners to make a difficult situation a little easier, and why sometimes those moments stay with you just as much as the crime itself. And, of course, there's a little bit of our usual humour along the way — including the time Ange brought an elderly lady home from the post office… Some of these stories are difficult to hear, but they're also a reminder that even when you see the worst of humanity, there is still good to be found. Just two weeks later, she survived a brutal attack that left her with life-changing injuries, requiring multiple facial reconstruction surgeries and years of recovery. Maria's story also reflects a difficult reality: for many survivors, leaving an abusive relationship is the most dangerous time. But Maria’s story did not end there. While navigating the criminal justice system and preparing for the prosecution of her attacker, Maria describes experiencing further trauma and betrayal from the very person assigned to investigate her case. She shares her experience of grooming, sexual coercion, and what she describes as an abuse of power by the officer responsible for supporting her through one of the most vulnerable periods of her life. We discuss the impact of domestic abuse beyond the physical injuries, the challenges survivors face after leaving abusive relationships, the importance of being heard, and why protecting victims must mean more than securing a conviction.     33 - MH17: Under the Barrier Tape - 18 Months in the Netherlands

    On 17th July 2014, Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 was shot down over eastern Ukraine, killing all 298 people on board. It remains the deadliest aircraft shoot-down in history and led to the largest Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) operation ever conducted in the Netherlands. Twelve years on, we reflect on our first disaster deployment and the 18 months we spent in the Netherlands supporting the response that followed. This isn't a retelling of MH17. Instead, we're taking you behind the scenes to share the work that continued long after the world's headlines had faded. From helping to establish the personal effects operation, to supporting bereaved families, we share what it was really like to work as part of a response of this scale.     32 - TRUE CRIME: The Unsolved Murders of Brian Price & Susan Tetrault — 40 Years Without Justice

    In the summer of 1986, Brian Price and Susan Tetrault were found brutally murdered in Susan's first floor flat in Clapham, South London. The killings were so extreme that the victims could only be identified by their fingerprints. A suspect was tried at the Old Bailey — and acquitted. The case was marked as detected — a recording practice that meant if someone was charged, the case was considered cleared, regardless of whether they were convicted. The suspect was acquitted. And yet the case was never reviewed. This episode is released just days before the 40th anniversary of the murders. In this episode, we are joined by two people who know this case better than anyone — from two very different perspectives. Ray Price is Brian's son. He has spent much of his life searching for the truth about what happened to his father, and has become a tenacious investigator in his own right — following leads, tracking down witnesses and refusing to let this case be forgotten. Alan Jackaman is a former Metropolitan Police detective with over 25 years of service, including murder investigations and murder reviews. He was involved in the original investigation and is the author of three books, including his most recent publication *Alibi: The Unsolved Price Tetrault Murders* — a compelling account of the case, the investigation, and the questions that remain unanswered.     31 - Dr Judy Hinchliffe: From Tsunamis to Terror Attacks — A Forensic Odontologist's Story

In this episode, Ange and Dee are joined by a very familiar face — Suzi Cutler, a former colleague from their time at Northumbria Police. Suzi spent almost 18 years in crime scene investigation — working as a CSI, Crime Scene Manager and Crime Scene Coordinator at Northumbria and Durham Constabulary — before moving into her current role as a UK and overseas specialist trainer, passing on her expertise to the next generation of forensic investigators at home and abroad. We go under the barrier tape on Suzi's fascinating career journey — from her early days as a CSI inspired by Patricia Cornwell novels, through senior leadership roles, and into the world of international forensic training.     For our one-year anniversary special, we thought we’d do something a little different and take it right back to where a lot of this started — the two of us working double crewed as CSIs. In this episode of The Crime Scene Insiders, we go back under the barrier tape and revisit some of the funniest, strangest, most chaotic and memorable jobs we attended together over the years. From turning up to a “routine” criminal damage and finding a human knuckle… to one of the most shocking car park scenes we’ve ever dealt with… to navigating a house full of dog mess while being repeatedly assaulted by an overfriendly Alsatian — this episode is full of the moments that never make it into the documentaries, but stay with you forever when you work in crime scene investigation. Along the way, we talk about the realities of working as CSIs, the dark humour that gets people through difficult jobs, and some of the absurd situations you find yourself in when you spend your days going under the barrier tape. This one is funny, chaotic, slightly disgusting in places… and probably the most “Ange and Dee” episode we’ve recorded so far.
