Julianna Glasse: This Is What Happens When Women Read

May Boeve talks with Julianna Glasse, author of the forthcoming book, This Is What Happens When Women Read, about leaving high-control religion, reclaiming her mind, and helping other women find freedom. Julianna shares her journey from Christian pop singer and high-profile evangelical figure to a writer, scholar, and organizer working with women around the world who are questioning the systems that have shaped and constrained their lives. Together, May and Julianna explore indoctrination, patriarchy, evangelical politics, the courage it takes to leave, and the transformative power of books, women’s circles, and intellectual freedom. Julianna reflects on the moment her then husband condemned her hidden books with the words, “This is what happens when women read,” and how that moment became a doorway into liberation and a new life. The conversation is both intimate and political, asking what becomes possible when women trust their own minds, gather together, and refuse to stay inside systems built to silence them.   Wondering how to support a fair and democratic midterm election? Emily Lee: How Volunteers Can Defeat MAGA

In this special episode of How We Build This, May Boeve talks with Emily Lee, executive director and co-founder of Seed the Vote, about how volunteers can play a decisive role in protecting democracy and building long-term movement power. Together, they launch the first-ever How We Build This delegation, inviting listeners to sign up for canvassing shifts in key races across the country at stvote.org/howwebuildthis. Emily traces her path from environmental justice work in Bay Area communities to electoral organizing with the Chinese Progressive Association, San Francisco Rising, and Seed the Vote, where she learned a core lesson: facts and evidence matter, but without organized political power, they are not enough.  This is more than a conversation. It’s an invitation. You, the supporters of How We Build This are being asked to help recruit 100 people to volunteer with Seed the Vote this cycle. Whether you can travel to knock doors, bring a friend, ask someone in a swing state to sign up, fundraise, phone bank, or support behind the scenes, Emily’s message is clear: you do not have to do everything. Pick one thing, and do it.
