This award winning actor and creator of films such as NO MORE and MORS DAG (Mother’s Day), skillfully brings together a creative team to support the development of universally resonant narratives grounded in the fearless truth of her personal journey. When this AFI Directing Fellow is not writing or directing, you can find her supporting other Vermont filmmakers as a volunteer board member of The Vermont Production Collective where she runs the Vermont Screenplay Incubator, supporting the story building and writing of other screenwriters. Today on the podcast we talk primarily about her upcoming short film project, The Books. Based on the award-winning novella THE BOOKS, written by an 8th grader in rural Vermont, this speculative thriller is set on the rural fringes of an authoritarian regime, where 15 year old Sloane risks everything to save a piece of history. Eliza is passionate advocate for authentic representation in the industry for the LGBTQ+ and autistic communities and we talked quite a bit about what that means, how we as filmmakers can do better to ensure we are giving voices to people in those communities and what her story has been as a neurodivergent and queer professional in the film industry. Sam founded the Plex Arts Festival, a multidisciplinary arts event in Burlington, and they have been the programmer at GMFF for the past 3 years.     Today’s podcast guest is Emma Schlenoff. I have had the extreme pleasure of working with her as Vermont Production Collective board member, but this is really the first time we are shedding the “business” aspect of things and just talking creative process and what drives her. Emma is the owner and director of Witness Oak Productions. Her experience is drawn from working her way up in the industry from PA to now producing narrative features here in Vermont. Shes directed and produced work for the band Birds of Chicago, worked on the producing team for National Geographic's Origins, and was offered the opportunity to work on several projects with Emmy-Winning Director, the one and only Ken Burns.  Her passion for film has risen from a deeply rooted love for storytelling and the human experience. Travis has a keen sense of connection to Vermont, its history, stories and other creatives here. His last project, Love of the Land, was recognized by the Vermont Historical Society with a Richard O. Hathaway Award and Vermont Public with a Made Here grant for the film...the first time I saw the film I was in tears. Travis's next project is about the last catamount in Vermont. Another connection to the state's past and a perhaps a theme of melancholy running through his work.
