    Ep 55 - Killed for Being Different - The Murder of Sophie Lancaster

    “They were attacked for how they looked — and what it revealed about those who chose to hate.” On a summer night in Lancashire, Sophie Lancaster and Robert Maltby took a familiar shortcut through a local park. They were only minutes from the home they shared when an ordinary walk became an encounter shaped by prejudice, hostility and sudden violence.     Ep 54 - The Ice Cream Wars

    “Andrew Doyle refused to surrender his ice-cream route. Six weeks later, someone came to his family’s door with petrol.” In 1980s Glasgow, the familiar sound of an ice-cream van could mean far more than cones and sweets. On housing estates with few nearby shops, the vans sold groceries, cigarettes and household essentials. A successful route meant regular customers, reliable money — and territory worth fighting over. Windows were smashed. Drivers were threatened. Vans were attacked. Eighteen-year-old Andrew Doyle drove for Marchetti Ices, one of the operators competing for routes across Glasgow’s east end. When a masked gunman fired twice through his windscreen, the message appeared unmistakable. But Andrew kept working. Six weeks later, shortly before two o’clock in the morning, someone entered the communal stairwell outside the Doyle family’s top-floor flat in Ruchazie. They were carrying petrol. By the time the family awoke, flames had blocked their only route out of the building. What followed would become one of Scotland’s most notorious murder investigations — a case built around frightened witnesses, disputed statements and a question that would continue long after the fire was extinguished.     Ep 53 - The Container Man

    “After a woman was found murdered inside her home, an unidentified man appeared nearby — carrying bags and wearing clothes that were not his.” In November 2021, June Fox-Roberts stopped answering her phone. When her daughter went to check on her, she entered the family home in Llantwit Fardre and discovered that something horrific had happened inside. Police had no obvious suspect and little footage from the streets surrounding June’s house. Then, workers at a nearby tyre yard disturbed a dishevelled stranger sheltering inside the back of a wagon. His hair appeared freshly cut and dyed. His face was scratched. He carried several bags, walked with a distinctive limp and seemed to be wearing clothing taken from somewhere else. Detectives did not know his name. They called him Container Man.
