The Cowboys Are REFUSING To Fix Their Biggest Problems...

The Dallas Cowboys are 3-5, coming off an overtime loss to the Arizona Cardinals, and Mauricio Rodriguez has a major question for the organization: What has actually changed? After the Cowboys' loss to Tampa Bay, the front office and coaching staff said they were going to evaluate the team and make significant changes. But Mauricio believes those changes never really came. The Cowboys are still playing conservative defense. They're still relying heavily on two-high looks. They're still playing soft zones. They're still reluctant to blitz. And they're still failing to consistently create pressure on opposing quarterbacks. The personnel changes haven't exactly been dramatic either. Dallas said it would shake things up at edge rusher, but Rashan Gary continued to lead the outside linebacker group in snaps. Donovan Ezeiruaku remained heavily involved. And Malachi Lawrence didn't suddenly receive a dramatically larger role. The linebacker room has seen some changes with Mar'Keise Overshown returning from injury and Shamar James getting more work, but Mauricio believes Dallas still hasn't made the changes that actually address its biggest problems. The same is true in the secondary. Joey Porter Jr. has obviously become a major part of the defense since the Cowboys acquired him, but that's a move Dallas had to make. Mauricio doesn't view simply playing Porter as evidence of some major coaching adjustment. He also believes the Cowboys haven't maximized Caleb Downs during his rookie season. Then there's the offense. Dallas found something that worked against Philadelphia. The Cowboys got under center. They used six offensive linemen. They used multiple tight ends. They ran the football repeatedly. And Javonte Williams exploded for 155 rushing yards. But Mauricio's concern was that Dallas would become predictable after that success. That's exactly what he believes happened against Arizona. The Cardinals expected Dallas to run. The Cowboys kept running anyway. Javonte Williams averaged well under three yards per carry, yet Dallas continued leaning on the rushing attack instead of attacking one of the worst passing defenses in the NFL. The problem became even more obvious on the most important drive of the game. Dallas needed a first down to help close out the game, but George Pickens and CeeDee Lamb weren't both on the field during the crucial sequence. That's a problem Mauricio has already been discussing for weeks. The Cowboys have a $27 million receiver in George Pickens, yet they're still not moving him around enough or creating easy opportunities for him. After the Cardinals loss, when asked why Pickens wasn't more involved, Brian Schottenheimer pointed to a play that was called back. Mauricio believes that response misses the bigger point. Dallas still isn't moving Pickens around enough. And that's part of the larger issue. The Cowboys aren't just struggling. They're struggling with the SAME problems they've been talking about fixing for weeks. The question is whether the organization is actually willing to acknowledge those problems. The question is whether they're willing to admit it. DAL YT 1101

Brian Schottenheimer says he's a problem solver. Mauricio Rodriguez doesn't believe the Dallas Cowboys have seen much evidence of that. After another Cowboys loss, Dallas is now 3-5 and many of the same problems that have plagued this team all season are still showing up. The Cowboys still can't run the football consistently. They still haven't solved their situational play-calling issues. They still aren't doing enough to get George Pickens involved. They still struggle to handle the blitz. And defensively, Dallas continues to have breakdowns that have been visible since the beginning of the season. That's why Mauricio believes the Cowboys' coaching staff is holding the team back. This isn't simply about one loss to the Arizona Cardinals. It's about the pattern. The Cowboys had one of their best rushing performances against Philadelphia, running for 155 yards behind Javonte Williams. But Mauricio views that game as more of an exception than proof that Dallas has solved its run-game problems. Against Arizona, Williams averaged fewer than three yards per carry, yet Dallas continued to call runs as if the rushing attack would eventually get going. The Cowboys ran the football 39 times, but the runs weren't producing enough. That is part of a larger problem with the offense: Dallas isn't consistently sticking with what works, and it isn't consistently moving away from what doesn't. And Mauricio believes the coaching staff is too often failing to maximize the talent available. The question now becomes whether Dallas would actually consider making a coaching change during the season. Mauricio doesn't expect it. But he also questions how Schottenheimer can return in 2027 without something dramatic changing. The Cowboys still have a chance because the NFC East remains wide open. But Mauricio believes the time for talking about fixing these problems is over. The Cowboys need to actually fix them. Is Brian Schottenheimer holding the Cowboys back? Should Dallas consider a coaching change? And can the Cowboys still save their season at 3-5? Mauricio Rodriguez explains why he believes the Cowboys' biggest problem may be the coaching staff itself. The Cowboys Could Make A HUGE Trade For Maxx Crosby...

The Dallas Cowboys and Maxx Crosby are being connected again as the NFL trade deadline approaches. Could Dallas actually land the Raiders superstar? Mauricio Rodriguez isn't predicting that the Cowboys will acquire Crosby, but he believes Dallas will make another move before the trade deadline. So he uses the A to Z Sports Trade Simulator to figure out exactly what it could take for the Cowboys to bring Crosby to Dallas. And some of these trades are WILD. The Trade Simulator assigns every player and draft pick a value based not only on production and talent, but also on contract situation. That makes it possible to build trades that account for the value of a player like Maxx Crosby compared to the Cowboys' available assets. Mauricio's first proposal starts with Dallas' 2027 first-round pick. The simulator says that isn't quite enough by itself, with Dallas still ahead by 333 points. Adding the Cowboys' 2027 second-round pick swings the trade too far toward Las Vegas. So Mauricio finds a middle ground. Dallas sends its 2027 first-round pick and 2028 third-round pick to the Raiders for Maxx Crosby. The simulator considers that a fair trade, and Mauricio says he would seriously consider making it. But that's only the first scenario. Mauricio then explores another trade built around Dallas' 2027 first-round pick and a swap of second-round picks. The simulator can make that deal work as well, although Mauricio admits it's not the kind of trade structure we typically see in the NFL. Then comes the most controversial proposal. What if Dallas sent its 2027 first-round pick AND Donovan Ezeiruaku to Las Vegas for Maxx Crosby? Mauricio would do it. He believes Crosby would represent such a massive upgrade that the Cowboys should be willing to part with a young edge rusher and a first-round pick. He also believes the deal could appeal to the Raiders because Ezeiruaku is young and has multiple years remaining on his contract. That could give Las Vegas a young piece to build around while Dallas gets one of the NFL's premier pass rushers. The final proposal is the blockbuster. Dallas gives up its 2027 first-round pick, 2028 first-round pick and 2027 second-round pick for Crosby. The simulator considers that a fair trade. Mauricio isn't automatically dismissive of it because Dallas could effectively be moving down from the first round into the second round in 2027, while also giving up the 2028 first. The question is whether the Cowboys would actually be willing to pay that price. And then Mauricio makes his prediction. So where does Maxx Crosby actually end up? And should the Cowboys be willing to give up a first-round pick — or even more — to get him? Mauricio Rodriguez uses the A to Z Sports Trade Simulator to build three different Maxx Crosby trades and determine what Dallas would realistically have to give up for the Raiders superstar. The Cowboys NEED To Go ALL IN At The Trade Deadline...

And Mauricio Rodriguez believes that should change the way Jerry Jones approaches the NFL trade deadline. The Cowboys are coming off a 3-4 start, while the New York Giants are 4-2-1 and just picked up a major win over the Houston Texans. At first glance, it looks like New York is the clear favorite in the division. But when Mauricio takes a closer look at the remaining schedule, the underlying numbers and the current state of the NFC East, he believes Dallas has a much better opportunity than the standings suggest. The Cowboys currently have a 46% chance to win the NFC East according to the prediction market Mauricio cites. The Giants are at 39%. More importantly, Dallas has the ninth-easiest remaining schedule in the NFL, while New York has the 17th-easiest. That difference could become extremely important over the second half of the season. Mauricio also points out that the Giants' 4-2-1 record needs some context. New York's opponents have a combined 14-33-1 record, and the Cowboys are the best opponent the Giants have faced so far. The Giants have also faced only one top-15 run defense this season. That was the Los Angeles Rams, and New York lost that game 28-6. There are legitimate reasons to believe the Giants are good. But there are also reasons to wonder how they'll perform when the schedule gets tougher. The Cowboys aren't perfect either. Mauricio believes Dallas is roughly a league-average team overall, with the offense carrying much of the team's success while the defense continues to struggle. But that's exactly why he believes the Cowboys need to make a move. Dallas isn't rebuilding. The Cowboys extended CeeDee Lamb. They extended Dak Prescott. They signed Ryan to a four-year deal. The entire construction of this roster has been about winning now. And with the NFC East still completely attainable, Mauricio believes Dallas should take another swing before the trade deadline. The Cowboys already made a major move by acquiring Joey Porter Jr. for a second-round pick. Now they need to address the two biggest remaining holes on the roster. Edge rusher. And linebacker. Mauricio believes the Cowboys simply aren't getting enough pass rush right now. Dallas needs somebody who can consistently help pressure the quarterback. The Cowboys also haven't gotten strong enough play from the middle linebacker position, something that was already a concern coming out of the offseason. If the Cowboys can add legitimate help at either position — or preferably both — Mauricio believes they could dramatically improve their chances of winning the NFC East. And if Dallas doesn't make a move, Mauricio believes the Cowboys could look back and regret it. Should the Cowboys go all in before the trade deadline? Which position should they address first? Edge rusher or linebacker? Mauricio Rodriguez explains why the Cowboys have a real opportunity to win the NFC East — and why that should force Dallas to make another major trade. The Truth About The Cowboys Defense…

Is the Dallas Cowboys defense actually getting better? The numbers say yes. Dallas has gone from allowing more than 30 points per game to giving up just 21, 23 and 24 points over its last three games. The Cowboys have also produced negative defensive EPA performances in consecutive weeks and posted their highest defensive success rates of the season. But Mauricio Rodriguez believes those numbers need to be taken with some caution. The Cowboys' recent opponents matter. Green Bay left multiple touchdowns on the field and was inconsistent offensively. Philadelphia played without Jalen Hurts, multiple starting wide receivers and lost Saquon Barkley for a significant portion of the game. Those circumstances don't show up in EPA or success rate. So are the Cowboys actually improving? Mauricio believes they are — but not enough to trust this defense yet. Three players in particular have helped Dallas take a step forward. Joey Porter Jr. has been everything the Cowboys hoped they were getting when they acquired him. Dallas has leaned into his ability to play man coverage and leave him on an island, allowing the defense to use him to erase one side of the field. Through three games with the Cowboys, Porter has allowed only two catches, both coming against Philadelphia and both going for five yards. Quinnen Williams has also started to look more comfortable in Dallas' defense. Rather than keeping Williams tied to a traditional one-gap-and-a-half role, the Cowboys appear to be allowing him to play more freely as a penetrating defensive tackle. That has resulted in more pressure, more tackles for loss and more successful plays against the run. Tito Bonia has also provided consistent run-stopping ability despite playing a limited number of snaps. Those individual improvements matter. But Mauricio believes the Cowboys' biggest defensive problem is still the run defense. That's especially concerning because Dallas traded away Micah Parsons with the stated intention of improving against the run. The Cowboys have talented defensive tackles. But their linebackers aren't consistently taking advantage of the opportunities those defensive tackles create. Dallas is struggling with gap integrity, hesitation and missed tackles. Mauricio highlights plays involving linebackers such as Shamar James and Jason Barham where the defender has an opportunity to attack a gap but hesitates or fails to attack it with enough force. When that happens, running backs can find huge openings. And that's creating a bigger problem. The Cowboys can have successful defensive plays for several downs, but one missed gap or missed tackle can turn into an explosive run. That's why Mauricio believes Dallas is better in defensive success rate than it is in EPA per play against the run. The Cowboys can win a lot of individual downs. But when they lose, they are giving up too much. And because opponents can consistently run the football against Dallas, they are putting the Cowboys in manageable third-down situations. Mauricio Rodriguez breaks down whether the Cowboys defense is truly improving, what's working, what's still broken and why the run defense remains the biggest obstacle standing between Dallas and a trustworthy defense. The Cowboys Finally Found Their Winning Formula...

The Dallas Cowboys beat the Philadelphia Eagles, and yes, the context matters. Philadelphia was without Jalen Hurts and two starting wide receivers. That doesn't mean the Cowboys should suddenly be considered Super Bowl contenders. But Mauricio Rodriguez believes Dallas found several things in this game that can actually be repeated moving forward. And it starts with the run game. Javonte Williams exploded for 155 rushing yards, but the story wasn't simply that Dallas finally gave its running back more opportunities. The Cowboys found a creative way to run the football. Dallas used Broderick Jones as an extra offensive lineman on a number of rushing plays, including one 34-yard Javonte Williams run where Jones lined up next to Tyler Guyton, blocked the edge rusher and then climbed to the second level. Guyton was able to finish the end man on the line of scrimmage, creating a massive hole for Williams. That is exactly the type of creative solution the Cowboys had been missing. Dallas also leaned heavily toward the left side of the offensive line. At one point, 83% of the Cowboys' runs were going toward the left. Tyler Smith was moving defenders at left guard. Tyler Guyton continued to play well at left tackle. And Broderick Jones gave the Cowboys another physical blocker to use in the run game. The result? 204 rushing yards. 112 yards after contact. Javonte Williams also produced an outstanding EPA per rush number, according to the data Mauricio cites. The Cowboys aren't going to use jumbo personnel packages every single week. But this was a legitimate answer against a physical Eagles defense. And the Cowboys found another answer with George Pickens. Mauricio had been calling for Dallas to move Pickens around more and create manufactured mismatches. Against Philadelphia, the Cowboys finally did it. On one play, Pickens lined up in the slot while Jake Ferguson moved outside. Philadelphia's best corner, Quinton Mitchell, followed Ferguson outside, leaving Pickens one-on-one against a safety. That's exactly the type of matchup Dallas should be creating for Pickens. The result was another big receiving performance. Pickens finished with 70 receiving yards, while CeeDee Lamb also topped 70 yards and scored two touchdowns. Dak Prescott wasn't perfect. His accuracy wasn't always sharp, and he had some misfires. But he also delivered three outstanding throws into the end zone and helped Dallas produce another 30-plus-point performance. After two straight weeks of offensive struggles, that is something the Cowboys can build on. There are still concerns. Dallas didn't generate enough pass rush. The defense deserves some skepticism because Philadelphia was extremely banged up. And Mauricio believes Brian Schottenheimer's play calling was too conservative at critical moments. Dallas didn't go for it on fourth-and-three during the opening drive. Then, late in the game with a chance to go up by two touchdowns, the Cowboys ran the ball on third-and-eight before settling for a field goal. And Dak Prescott showed he can still make the big throws when Dallas gives him enough answers. Can the Cowboys build on this? Was this the beginning of a real offensive turnaround? Mauricio Rodriguez breaks down the biggest things Dallas discovered in its win over Philadelphia and explains why Cowboys fans should take this victory seriously — while still keeping the proper perspective. But it's not simply that they aren't running the football enough. Mauricio Rodriguez believes the bigger problem is that Dallas has become far too predictable when it does run the football — especially out of 11 personnel. The Cowboys are actually a top-five rushing offense in the NFL in success rate. So why does the run game feel so ineffective when you watch Dallas play? The numbers provide an important clue. Last season, the Cowboys' explosive-run rate was 7.3%, according to Sports Info Solutions. That wasn't a great number, ranking 23rd in the NFL, but Dallas was able to consistently move the chains and avoid negative plays. This season, that explosive-run rate has fallen all the way to 4.9%. That's 31st in the NFL. Even more concerning, Dallas is being hit at the line of scrimmage on 48% of its rushing attempts. Javonte Williams can break tackles, and he showed that ability at a high level last season, but there are plenty of plays where there simply isn't much room for him to work. When Dallas lines up in 11 personnel, approximately 70% of its runs are inside runs. That's the second-highest rate in the NFL. Dallas is running inside zone roughly 40% of the time, which is also among the highest rates in the league. Compare that with offenses such as Ben Johnson's Bears, Sean McVay's Rams and Joe Brady's Bills, which have much more varied run-game approaches. The Cowboys do have counter and trap concepts in the offense, but Mauricio believes the team isn't using enough variety to keep defenses honest. The Cowboys ran a much more diverse run game in 2025, incorporating counter, trap, power and other concepts that helped create different looks for opposing defenses. Mauricio believes too much of that variety has disappeared. That means this isn't necessarily a case of Dallas simply needing to run the ball more. The Cowboys need to find better ways to run it. They need more variety out of 11 personnel. They need to create better blocking angles. And they need to stop allowing defenses to know exactly what is coming based on the personnel grouping and formation. That could become especially important Monday night against the Philadelphia Eagles. Mauricio expects Dallas to make the run game a major emphasis against Philadelphia, particularly with the Eagles using a backup quarterback. His expectation is that the Cowboys will lean heavily on Javonte Williams. And can Javonte Williams take advantage if the Cowboys finally diversify their approach? Mauricio Rodriguez breaks down the numbers behind Dallas' rushing problems and explains exactly what the Cowboys need to change before Monday Night Football against the Eagles. The Cowboys NEED To Make One Of These HUGE Trades...

Jerry Jones has indicated that Dallas is more likely to be a buyer than a seller at the trade deadline, and Mauricio Rodriguez is using the A to Z Sports Trade Simulator to find realistic trades that could improve the Cowboys' defense. The Cowboys have several defensive needs, but Mauricio believes Dallas should focus on adding an impact pass rusher rather than making a small move that doesn't significantly change the team. The first player Mauricio targets is Chargers edge rusher Tuli Tuipulotu. Tuipulotu is only 24 years old and has the type of upside that fits what Dallas has been looking for in its recent in-season trades: a player who can help immediately while potentially becoming a long-term piece of the roster. According to the A to Z Sports Trade Simulator, Tuipulotu is valued at approximately 602 points. Mauricio is able to construct a deal that sends the Cowboys' 2028 third-round pick and 2027 fourth-round pick to Los Angeles for Tuipulotu. That's a trade Mauricio would make immediately. The second player is Steelers edge rusher Alex Highsmith. Highsmith carries a much higher trade value, coming in at 1,061 points in the simulator. That means Dallas would have to give up significantly more draft capital. Mauricio ultimately lands on a deal centered around the Cowboys' 2027 second-round pick and 2027 fourth-round pick. He admits that is an expensive price for a team sitting at 2-4, but if Jerry Jones is serious about making the Cowboys buyers, Mauricio believes Dallas needs to go big rather than make a minor addition. Then there's Josh Sweat. Mauricio isn't nearly as interested. The Cardinals edge rusher is valued at 477 points, but Mauricio doesn't believe Sweat has looked like the same player he was in 2025. The simulator suggests Dallas could potentially acquire Sweat for two fourth-round picks, but Mauricio doesn't love the deal because he isn't convinced Sweat is worth paying that price for based on his production this season. The final defensive target is Dolphins linebacker Jordan Brooks. Brooks is valued at 351 points, and Mauricio finds a potential deal involving a 2027 fourth-round pick and 2028 sixth-round pick. That's a trade Mauricio would make in a heartbeat. However, he acknowledges that Miami may have little reason to move Brooks because the young linebacker was recently extended and could be part of the Dolphins' future.
