The Gym Isn’t About Weight Loss

What if working out had less to do with the number on the scale and more to do with being able to live your life better? In this episode of Big Man Big Problems, Julio sits down with Wade from to talk about fitness, aging, strength, mobility, motivation, and why exercise should be about a lot more than just looking good. They get into what men should actually be thinking about when they train, especially as they get older. Instead of only focusing on biceps, bench press, or how you look in the mirror, Wade talks about building a body that can still move well 10, 15, or 20 years from now. Julio also opens up about his own training history, including his time on television, triathlon training, and how years of building core strength may still be helping him today as he deals with back issues from a neurofibroma. They talk about why fitness is never one-size-fits-all, why it is never too late to start, and how simple goals like getting off the floor, moving without pain, or being able to pick up your kids can matter just as much as any number on a scale. Wade also shares a few simple ways to start moving at home, including farmer’s holds, scaled wall sits, and elevated planks, with one major reminder: meet your body where it is instead of trying to prove something on day one. Because at the end of the day, Julio’s message stays the same: Health before the scale. Feeling good before looking good. And just getting started counts. Stop Giving Up on Yourself

How many times have you talked yourself out of something before you really gave yourself a chance? In this episode of Big Man Big Problems, Julio talks about something he knows firsthand: giving up on yourself, living with doubt, and looking back at opportunities you wish you had handled differently. He shares some of the chances he feels he let slip away, from West Point to acting and television, and why starting this podcast became something different. This time, he made a promise to himself that he was going to keep going. Julio also tells the story of competing in a triathlon in San Francisco, getting hit by a wave in the middle of the bay, losing sight of the shore, and nearly giving up. Instead of trying to conquer the entire swim at once, he focused on ten strokes at a time. That idea becomes the heart of the episode, you do not have to solve your entire life today. Sometimes you just need to make the next move. Julio talks about focusing on what you can control, giving yourself some grace, learning from failure, and remembering that the people who seem to have everything together usually have years of setbacks behind the version you see today. He also gets into self-doubt, regret, and why mistakes might be more useful when you stop treating them as things you wish you could erase and start treating them as lessons for what comes next. You are probably going to doubt yourself. You are probably going to mess something up. You might even get knocked down a few times. Just get back up one more time than you got knocked down. Low Energy, Low T & the Things Men Don't Talk About

Men will talk about work, sports, their kids, their cars... pretty much anything before admitting that something about their body just doesn't feel the way it used to. In this episode of Big Man Big Problems, Julio visits Gameday Men's Health and sits down with Amy to have an honest conversation about men's health, aging, testosterone, energy, weight, sexual wellness and the things a lot of men were simply never taught how to talk about. And Julio doesn't just ask the questions. He goes through the process himself. They talk about what happens during an initial visit, including a body composition analysis, symptom questionnaire and lab work, and why having a place specifically focused on men's health can make some of these conversations a little easier. They also get into some of the signs men may overlook, changes in energy, difficulty building muscle, poor sleep, brain fog and changes in libido. Most importantly, they talk about why experiencing changes as you age isn't something to be embarrassed about and why being honest with yourself and your healthcare provider matters. For Julio, the bigger conversation isn't about trying to be 25 again. It's about healthspan, not just how long you live, but how healthy and active you're able to be while you're here.
