I've long felt that my perfect podcast would be a patchwork quilt of my woo woo wellness favorites, comedic cut ups, pop culture boots on the ground, amateur sociology/psychology nerds, sports (but kind of just tennis), philosophy waxers and on and on. I haven't found one, so I made one! Piqued never picks a lane, but always has a take on whatever is pricking up our ears in these very plugged in times. We zoom in to find the minutia and zoom out to find perspective and always with heart and humor.

    Price of Admission

    (Producer/husband)Charlie is finally back in studio for a chat this week, so obviously I squeezed every drop of his insight and perspective out of him that I could.We got in deep this week talking about the ‘Pay to Play’ structure of getting your creative output to your audience. What we mean by that is that the means to ‘distribute’ anything these days involves a whole second vocation of social media hustle, self promotion, building a following with content that is not necessarily even really your ‘product’.    I know that the resistance we may meet in trying to catch on, can always be attributed to the quality of our out-put, but there is an undeniable extra element at play in these times    The climate reminds me of how you need to have three forms of ID to get ID-well if we had that why would we be here? You need to have a full blown following to play certain venues, get significant traction on certain platforms, be considered for certain promotions and-of course-to monetize. It seems like you need to have the job to get the job, it really can make your head spin.   We are both trying to keep the tenuous balance of making an effort, being consistent, putting energy that we want to see out in the world in to our respective fields while also making sure we are not auditioning for a job we don’t want.   The more you play to the algorithms and the viral moments, the more you will become a slave to them. Churning out click bait, in my case, and consumable, easy listening, derivative hits in Charlie’s, is not the job we want, so we definitely don’t want to girl boss our way in to clocking in to the enshittified factory. Still, we don’t want to be complacent or bitter and cop out of putting ourselves out there and having patience and a willingness to cultivate our niche..    The messaging out there pushing the idea that you have to feed this system (which kind of gives us the ick) is so pervasive, that you can almost forget that there is a real vested interest from some deep pockets in getting you to believe that there is no other way.     Performative Outrage Olympics

    It is the mother of all balancing acts trying to retain your discernment about deceptive, narrative hijacking, attention seeking, and performative individuals and still respecting people’s hidden(or if not hidden, maybe just less visible for whatever reason)struggles. I certainly don’t want to slide down a slippery slope of victim blaming or invalidating stranger’s narratives/identities or personal challenges, but we do all have our experiences with people who co-opt popular or emerging movements, and center themselves in certain struggles where they should not. Everyone has had their experiences with the fakers, the tragedy tourists, the crisis co-opters -the people who just seem to have an excuse and a sob story to get out of everything. It can make us project, hastily discredit and possibly harm some genuinely undeserving people. The strays people can catch in this battle can injure deeply. The best we can do is to thoroughly investigate our own relationship with outrage, virtue privilege, and bias. If we can understand why certain things read a certain way to us, and how we interact with them, it may give us more emotional intelligence and empathy to extend to our discernment of others and outside scenarios. We have to understand what part we play in the problem to have any potentiality to be a part of the solution right?     Collusion

    Ed Sheeran may want to stay A-political, but I’m finding it hard not to get in the Frey a bit this week. There seem to be conspiracies and collusions everywhere. It is becoming more important to me that people make it clear and be ten toes on where they stand these days than what those stances even are. It’s just such a shady shrouded web of power, money, influence and obfuscation that you really start to feel desperate for anyone to just shoot straight. There is also some plain weird theatrics gong on, what with meat lic Jumbotrons, treating college football fans like an ominous migrant workforce, and..um…circling back to how bad we really think bestiality is.     Manic Memoirs and Neurospicy/Normie

    I may not be having a belated brat summer but I definitely spent this summer taking in some Brat coded Audio books. I somehow managed to listen to every memoir by a messy Manhatttanite with a pill addiction that was ever written and narrated. I can honestly recommend it. Whipping through Arkansas listening to Julia Fox lisp and vocal fry through her unhinged adventures,Doing my dishes while listening to Lena Dunham explain how you can make it to the MET gala but not contractually obligated work if you have chronic pain. Making a stir fry listening to Caroline Calloway explain how she sold a boo she would never write, and literally sold snake oil to pay back her advance.And now I’m in the messy bedhead of Cat Marnell recounting how you can be a speed addict and a beauty editor at the same time until you can’t. I have taken breaks form my manic memoir foray to ponder about the publics inability to conceive of disliking someone while still not wanting bodily harm to come to them or their child(get that restraining order Kentucky muffin)and musing about who in the bravo verse may be a bit neurospicy other than the obviously cluster b demon men we all know and some of us inexplicably love.     Focus and Flow

    Charlie is back and we are characteristically in sync. We are both control freaks having an epiphany that all this focus on control is doing little more than filling our consciousness with unusable energy. It has no nutritional value and our frequency is getting backed up. It’s time to unclench. Let’s make room for information, experience, opportunities and clarity. We are realizing that what we has sometimes mistaken for focus has been a murky blend of ego, pathology and tension. Focus actually feels relaxed and clear.
