She Chose the Driver’s Seat. In the 1980s, at just 22 years old, she stepped into an industry where women were not expected to belong. Coming from a family that believed a woman’s place was in the kitchen, she faced strong opposition at home — but she didn’t listen. She got behind the wheel of a truck and started her journey into trucking. From learning to drive and run as a team with male co-drivers, to making deliveries and pulling into shippers who wondered, “How is this girl going to back that truck in?” — she faced challenges at every turn. But her story didn’t stop behind the wheel. She started seeing how truck drivers were being treated and how much of their time and hard work was going unpaid. Waiting on the side of the highway because of a breakdown? No pay. Waiting for work? No pay. Hours spent working, but not being properly compensated. That’s when she started asking questions. She challenged the system, got involved with labour laws, fought for truck drivers’ rights, and pushed back against companies that were taking advantage of drivers. One question she asked says it all: “If you come to work and your computer doesn’t turn on, do you still get paid? So why should a truck driver sit on the side of the highway and not get paid?” This is the story of a woman who entered trucking when few expected women to do it — and eventually became a voice for the rights of the very drivers she once fought to become. From the 1980s trucking world to Labour laws, unpaid waiting time, driver pay, company practices, and the battles that changed her life — this episode goes far beyond trucking. It’s about standing up, asking questions, and fighting for what’s right. 🎙️ Watch the full episode of The Truck Stop Show and hear her story in her own words.Let us know what you think!
