What Every Woman Over 35 Should Know About Style

Wondering how to dress after 40 or how to dress after 50? In this episode of Anything But Mid, Amy and Whitney tackle midlife fashion and the “rules” no one asked for. You can dress however you want at any age, and the rules you’ve been following were made up anyway. Former boutique owner Amy shares what she learned from years of watching women size themselves up in the fitting room, and why confidence is the best thing you can wear.If you’ve ever asked yourself “Can I wear a skirt after 50?”, worried about dressing appropriately for your age, or wondered what dressing according to age is even supposed to mean, this conversation is for you. We trace where the old fashion rules came from, from beauty standards to class expectations to the white-after-Labor-Day myth. We also look at women like Dolly Parton and Goldie Hawn, who ignore every rule and look incredible doing it.We also cover how to find your personal style in your 40s and 50s: finding your style icons, learning what you actually like and what you don’t, and not getting swept up in trends or in what looks great on your friend. Along the way you’ll get practical tips on fit, including bra size, clothing sizes and jeans, plus a reminder that nothing you put on is a lifelong commitment. This episode is also about how to feel confident in your clothes and in your body. If you’re looking for how to feel confident in your body at 40, how to feel confident in your body at 50, or how to stop judging your body in your 40s, we talk honestly about why we’re so much harder on ourselves than anyone else is, and how to stop. Think of it as life tips for women over 40 who are done shrinking, hiding and following rules that were never meant for them.We also open with a very real midlife moment about menopause brain fog and why it’s time women stopped suffering in silence.Whether you’re in your 40s, 50s or beyond, our message is simple: wear the white shoes, show the cleavage, rock the bold lipstick, and trust your own instincts. This week’s challenge: Notice one “should” you follow when you get dressed, then break it on purpose. Tell us how it went. What fashion rule are you ready to break? Tell us in the comments or email us your own mid moment. The Power of FUN in Midlife

If you’ve ever caught yourself wondering how to stop being so serious, how to bring joy back into your life, or why you don’t remember the last time you did something just for fun, this conversation is for you. We’re sharing why adults need play, especially in midlife, and how to be more playful as an adult without needing a big reinvention or a lot of free time. Whitney shares how a spontaneous week-long e-bike tour through Provence, France, pulled her out of her comfort zone, introduced her to a whole new group of people, and reminded her what it feels like to do something with no goal except enjoying it. We also talk about how to find joy in midlife and how to find joy after 50. That includes why play lowers stress, keeps you feeling youthful, and helps you build a social life after 40 and make friends as a woman in midlife, whether through a group trip, a women’s group for over 50, or a weekly game night. We share simple, low-pressure ideas for how to have a fun life right now: dancing in your kitchen, a daily 5 p.m. playlist, pickleball and pickup basketball, doodling, puzzles, board games and cards, playing tag with your partner, and hopping on a playground swing. We also cover hobbies for women over 40 and hobbies for women over 50 that are about joy, not performance. Plus, how to add whimsy to everyday life, from renaming your meetings like YouTube videos to turning a school volunteer email into a song parody. We also open with a few surprising menopause symptoms (sensory overload, dry mouth, foot pain, frozen shoulder, and ringing in the ears). Whitney shares a frightening personal story about her daughter’s attack on a hiking trail, the importance of listening to your intuition, and why women’s safety and self-defense matter. We then shake it off and get back to what this season of life can be: playful, social, and yours. Midlife isn’t the end of fun. It’s the second curve, when you don’t have to be the best at everything and you finally get to slow down and enjoy it. What’s your favorite way to play as an adult? We’d love to hear it. Share it in the comments or email us your mid moment. Remember to share this podcast with a friend, and rate and review and follow the show! Have a midlife moment to share? What's the Deal with Rosacea in Midlife and Perimenopause?

Amy gives Whitney a time-warp quiz, Whitney got an upper bleph, and what's going on with rosacea? What is rosacea, and can menopause cause it? In this honest midlife conversation, I share my brand-new rosacea diagnosis in my 50s and break down everything I’ve learned so far: what rosacea is, the most common rosacea symptoms, rosacea causes, rosacea triggers, and what the research says about rosacea treatment. We also get into one of the biggest questions for women right now: is rosacea caused by hormones? Shifting estrogen, progesterone, and cortisol during perimenopause and menopause can dilate blood vessels, thin the skin, and weaken the skin barrier, which is why rosacea in women over 40 and rosacea in women over 50 is so common and so frustrating. This episode is for any woman searching for answers about rosacea vs acne, wondering whether rosacea is curable (it’s a lifelong condition with no cure, but it can be managed), or looking for how to treat rosacea naturally alongside professional care. I walk through my current routine: a gentle, basic cleanser, azelaic acid, a simple hyaluronic moisturizer, and an occasional soothing mask. I also cover the topical options I researched, including ivermectin and metronidazole, why I’m trying monthly BBL (broadband light) treatments for redness, and what I found on dietary changes, cooling foods, and facial acupuncture. Everyone’s skin is different, and we’re not doctors, so please talk to your dermatologist about what’s right for you. Before we get there, we catch up on my surprise eyelid surgery (a total accident that started with an eyelid rash), plus a hilarious “Time Warp” pop quiz that proves time makes no sense in midlife. If you’re looking for midlife life tips, midlife life advice, or just a reminder that we do what we want, this conversation is for you. What has your experience with rosacea or midlife skin changes been? I’d love to hear it in the comments! Remember to share this podcast with a friend, and rate and review and follow the show! Energy Healing: What It Is, What It Feels Like, and Is It Real?

We didn't plan on Amy outing herself on this one, but here we are: she's a Reiki master, and we finally sat down and explained what that actually means. This episode kicks off with Amy deep into her own self-love reset while Justin's out of town. Then Whitney shared her story of a self love reset through a remote energy healing session to work through the stress of publishing her book. If you've ever wondered what energy healing is, whether it's real, or why you'd even bother with it, we walk through all of it. We all have moments when we feel lost or stuck, but mid life seems to a specific time of confusion!  We talk about how Amy became a Reiki master back in 2020, training through all three levels one-on-one, and why we don't think you need years of training to access this — we think anyone can learn it.  This episode is really about energy healing for feeling stuck, because that's exactly where Whitney was — resistant, blocked, and avoiding the excitement of her own book launch. We talk through the signs you have blocked energy, how to release blocked energy on your own (grounding techniques for energy, sageing, getting honest about what's actually yours versus an inherited belief), and whether energy healing is real or just wellness noise.  Have you ever felt so blocked you didn't even know where to start? We'd love to hear how you work through it. 49 - Are Fasting Mimicking Diets Worth It In Midlife?

Curious about the benefits of fasting but don't know where to start? In this episode of Anything But Mid, Whitney and Amy break down what is fasting, what is a fasting mimicking diet, and how to do fasting the smart way—especially if you're a woman over 40 navigating perimenopause or menopause. Plus, the usual mid moments: forgotten PIN numbers, pap smear panic, and old patterns we're finally done with. So what is Prolon used for? It's a five-day fasting mimicking diet developed by USC longevity researcher Dr. Valter Longo, designed to trigger autophagy—your body's natural cellular cleanup process—without a full calorie deficit. Whitney is on day three of her third round, and she and Amy walk through how to do a fasting mimicking diet step by step: what's in the box, what a real five days feels like, and the side effects of Prolon nobody tells you about (hello, day-two headache). We also dig into fasting mimicking diet vs intermittent fasting—and why intermittent fasting for women over 40 isn't always the win it's marketed to be. If you're dealing with fasting and cortisol issues, wondering whether intermittent fasting perimenopause is safe, or trying to figure out the real deal with fasting and menopause, this episode covers the science (in plain English) on why gentle, cyclical fasting protocols may work better than extreme ones for our hormones. Beyond the how-to, we get into the good stuff: real fasting mimicking diet results, from reduced biological age to better skin hydration to sharper focus, plus an honest look at the Longevity diet research behind it all—what's backed by science and what's still just marketing. Think of this as our unfiltered fasting reviews episode: no sponsorship, just two friends sharing what actually happened when they tried it. 48 - Cortisol in Midlife- Good or Bad?

Wide awake at 3 a.m. with your brain spiraling about your taxes, an unread email, or something embarrassing from eighth grade? That's cortisol. In this episode, we break down what is cortisol, cortisol hormone function, and what does cortisol do to your body -- plus how to reduce cortisol and finally figure out how to stop waking up in the middle of the night. We cover cortisol vs. adrenaline (they're not the same thing, even though they show up together), why a cortisol spike happens overnight even when you're doing everything right, and how cortisol and insomnia are connected. We also get into cortisol and sleep, cortisol and menopause, and why your hormone replacement therapy might not be enough on its own -- because cortisol can literally block your progesterone from binding to your brain. Then we walk through the signs of high cortisol and symptoms of high cortisol in women -- brain fog, breakouts, that wired-but-tired feeling -- and get into cortisol for women over 40 specifically: why this hits harder in midlife, how cardio and cortisol are more connected than you'd think, and even how cortisol and insulin play into blood sugar and energy. Finally, we give you our five daily rules for how to lower cortisol naturally, how to reset cortisol levels, and how to fix cortisol before it fixes you -- including light maxing, why you shouldn't drink coffee on an empty stomach, the vagus nerve biohacks we swear by, and the aggressive gargling incident that may or may not have injured a tonsil.Remember to share this podcast with a friend, and rate and review and follow the show!Have a midlife moment to share?Email us at anythingbutmidpodcast@gmail.com and tell us your mid moment, your wins, or what you want us to talk about next.Follow us:https://www.instagram.com/anythingbutmid/Amy Edwards – https://instagram.com/realamyedwardsWhitney Stropp – https://instagram.com/whitneystroppThe Amy Edwards Show:https://open.spotify.com/show/5SdojmuUpXfksyQD8gbXJmhttps://www.youtube.com/@TheAmyEdwardsShowEvery Widow Thing:https://open.spotify.com/show/5XO1NK5sbBJ2ZAAf2fQpO3https://www.youtube.com/@everywidowthing

We Tried Every Type Of Magnesium: Which One Actually Works?

There are so many types of magnesium on the shelf right now -- magnesium glycinate, magnesium citrate, magnesium L-threonate, magnesium taurate, magnesium malate, magnesium oxide -- that picking the best magnesium for women over 40 can feel like a full-time job. In this episode, we break down exactly what magnesium is, why there are so many forms, which magnesium is best for sleep, which magnesium is best for anxiety, and how much magnesium you should actually take every day. We go deep on magnesium glycinate vs. citrate (spoiler: one of them can send you running to the bathroom), what is magnesium L-threonate and whether the brain-boosting hype is backed by real research, magnesium taurate benefits for heart health, and why magnesium malate for fatigue gets recommended for muscle pain and fibromyalgia. We also compare magnesium oxide vs. glycinate, because the cheap stuff on the drugstore shelf is not the same as what your body actually absorbs. Then we get into the questions everyone is actually googling: magnesium deficiency symptoms and why they're so hard to pin down, magnesium for menopause symptoms (does it really help hot flashes?), magnesium glycinate for sleep dosage, and how much magnesium should I take daily as a woman over 40. We also share our own experience getting talked into an expensive "seven forms of magnesium" supplement -- and whether it was worth the money. And before we get into any of that, we've got mid moments -- a river-tubing trip gone slightly sideways with a nearly-80-year-old mom, foot cramps, and yet another surprise chin hair. Grab your pumpkin seeds and settle in.
