Ep 21: "The Midwife Broke my Water Without Asking"

Prenatal chiropractor and birth advocate Dr. Jessica Solis joins Gina Mundy to share two very different birth stories. Her first, a planned birth center birth, turned into a 30-plus-hour labor, her water being broken without her consent, a hospital transfer, and an epidural followed by a frightening drop in her blood pressure and her baby's heart rate. Her second was a calm, undisturbed birth at home. Jessica explains how those experiences shaped the way she now cares for pregnant patients: the Webster technique, Spinning Babies, pelvic floor physical therapy, and calming the nervous system. Gina shares what she does and doesn't see in her birth injury cases, including why induction comes up so often and why a mother's intuition should never be dismissed. This conversation helps expecting parents choose their birth team carefully, prepare their bodies and minds, and speak up when something feels wrong.     About JessicaDr. Jessica Solis, DC, is a chiropractor and birth advocate who co-owns Vibrant Sol Chiropractic with her husband, Dr. Ross Solis. She focuses on prenatal, postpartum, and pediatric care. She is Webster certified through the ICPA and has treated more than a thousand pregnant moms. For more than two decades, her work has focused on one of the most consequential moments in a family’s life: childbirth. Gina has spent her career litigating and studying birth injury cases in hindsight. She analyzes what happened, why it happened, which warning signs were missed, and what could have changed the outcome. That perspective became the foundation for her internationally bestselling book, A Parent’s Guide to a Safer Childbirth. Gina believes the greatest lessons for helping babies enter the world safely should be learned before labor begins, not after something has gone wrong. Through her book, The Childbirth Attorney Podcast, speaking engagements, media appearances, and international platforms, Gina brings those lessons to parents, doulas, birth professionals, and families around the world. Her work has reached audiences throughout the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and beyond. Gina litigates birth injury cases across the United States. Her commitment to preventing birth injuries is the very force that drives her to demand accountability when a preventable mistake forever changes the life of a mother or child. She has dedicated her career to understanding the decisions that protect mothers and babies during labor and delivery.  When those decisions are not made and a preventable injury occurs, she knows what should have happened, why it did not, and how to hold the hospital accountable. She uses that knowledge to help families find answers and get the financial compensation they need to provide the best possible future for their child. Ep 20: Real Birth Stories, Better Births: What 1,000 Moms Taught Bryn Huntpalmer

What can a thousand real birth stories teach you before you walk into the delivery room? Gina Mundy sits down with Bryn Huntpalmer, founder of The Birth Hour podcast, to talk about what she's learned from more than a decade of listening to parents share their births. They discuss why preparing for every type of birth matters, even ones you don't plan on, and how to build a care team you trust. They also cover the questions to ask your provider, why you can request a new nurse, and what parents should know about Pitocin inductions and having their water broken. Gina shares a trend she's seeing in her birth injury cases right now: umbilical cord prolapse after routine water-breaking during inductions. Bryn also talks about her new book, The Birth Hour, a collection of real birth stories to inform, inspire, and empower expecting parents.   Why listening to all kinds of birth stories, even ones you don't expect to have, helps you stay calm when birth takes an unexpected turnHow to tell whether your OB or midwife is a good match by asking when they recommend induction and whether you can go past your due dateWhy every part of labor requires informed consent, including breaking your water and increasing PitocinHow Pitocin can be increased slowly and in small amounts, and why Gina links rapid increases to birth injury casesBryn's biggest lesson from 1,000 birth stories: a team you trust shapes how you feel about your birth, even when things don't go as planned  WHAT YOU'LL LEARNGUEST INFORMATIONBryn Huntpalmer, Founder of The Birth HourBryn Huntpalmer founded The Birth Hour podcast in 2015 after having two home births of her own. Ep 17: The NICU Expert: What Every Parent Wishes They Knew on Day One

This is for the Ashley O'Neil Podcast - “The NICU Expert: What Every Parent Wishes They Knew on Day One” In this episode of The Childbirth Attorney Podcast, I sit down with Ashley O’Neil, a NICU mom, author, podcaster, advocate, and founder of The O’Neil Foundation for Healing.   Ashley has spent years listening to NICU parents tell their stories, interviewing medical professionals, writing books for NICU families, building a podcast around the NICU experience, and living the journey herself with her son, Kolin.   So I wanted to ask her the questions parents actually want answered.   What is the most overrated NICU advice?   What is the worst thing you can say to a NICU mom?   What is the best thing you can say?   Is Google helpful or dangerous?   Should parents ask questions during rounds?   Should they get a second opinion?   Is “be strong” actually terrible advice?   What does advocacy look like inside the NICU?   And if Ashley could go back to Day One of her own NICU journey, what would she tell herself?   We also talk about what happens after discharge, when the NICU stay is technically over but families are suddenly navigating therapies, services, equipment, appointments, and an entirely new version of parenting.   Ashley also shares the story behind The O’Neil Foundation for Healing, a nonprofit she created to support families facing grief, medical trauma, caregiving, and loss.   And near the end of this episode, I ask her one question I especially wanted answered:   What would you say to the parent listening to this podcast at 2:00 a.m., sitting beside an incubator, scared, exhausted, and unsure what comes next?   Her answer is one every NICU parent should hear. https://www.instagram.com/ginamundy/ https://www.instagram.com/hiebirthinjuryattorney/ https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100093989808329 https://www.linkedin.com/in/gina-mundy-70318554/ Childbirth Attorney Podcast: https://www.youtube.com/@thechildbirthattorney Websites: www.ginamundy.com www.fiegerlaw.com Get my book: t.ly/G7v4I Who am I? Ep 16: NICU Survival Mode: What Happens to a Parent’s Brain

If your baby is in the NICU and you cannot stop Googling, cannot remember what the doctor just told you, keep replaying every decision, or feel like your brain will not shut off — this episode is for you.   For NICU Awareness Month, I sit down with Dr. Katherine Nunn, an HCPC-registered clinical psychologist, writer, and a NICU mother. Katherine understands this conversation from two very different places: as a psychologist who understands trauma and the brain, and as a mother who has lived through the NICU, surgeries, separation, and the terrifying uncertainty of not knowing what comes next..   And we talk about something NICU parents desperately need to hear: When your brain goes into survival mode, it does not mean you are falling apart. It means your brain is doing exactly what it was designed to do.   Your brain is wired to protect you. When something threatens your baby, it starts scanning for danger, searching for answers, replaying information, anticipating what could happen next, and trying to regain control in a situation that may feel completely uncontrollable.   Katherine also gives parents practical tools they can actually use in the middle of that fear — holding ice, splashing cold water on your face, naming and writing down exactly what you are feeling, or simply calling someone and saying out loud, “This is what I am feeling right now.” This episode is not about telling NICU parents to “stay positive.”   It is about helping them understand what is happening inside their own minds while they are trying to survive what may be the most frightening experience of their lives.   So if you are sitting beside an incubator feeling lost, confused, scared, exhausted, or completely unlike yourself, I want you to hear this conversation.   Your brain is not failing you.   It is trying to protect you.   And there are ways to help it through. https://www.instagram.com/ginamundy/ https://www.instagram.com/hiebirthinjuryattorney/ https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100093989808329 https://www.linkedin.com/in/gina-mundy-70318554/ Childbirth Attorney Podcast: https://www.youtube.com/@thechildbirthattorney Websites: www.ginamundy.com www.fiegerlaw.com Get my book: t.ly/G7v4I Who am I? Ep 15: Doula Do's and Don'ts in the Delivery Room

What should a doula actually do in the delivery room? And where is the line between advocacy and stepping outside the doula role? In this episode of The Childbirth Attorney Podcast, Gina Mundy sits down with labor and delivery nurse Colette Wagholikar and doula Rachel Myers for a candid conversation about the do’s and don’ts of doula support during childbirth. They discuss when a doula should speak up, when she should step back, how to advocate without giving medical advice, whether doulas should understand fetal monitoring, what to do if a family does not feel comfortable with their nurse, and how to help parents ask better questions without creating unnecessary conflict with the medical team. They also talk about what effective advocacy looks like in real time, how doulas can support informed decision-making, and the mistakes doulas should avoid when emotions are high and the room gets complicated. This episode is not just for doulas. It is for expecting parents, partners, grandparents, and anyone who may be in the delivery room. Because good advocacy is not about taking over the room. It is about knowing when to speak, what to ask, and when to step back. Ep 13: What to Think About Before Your Next Pregnancy Workout

Stop scrolling through conflicting pregnancy workout advice on Instagram. In this episode, host Gina Mundy sits down with Tammy Potter, a pregnancy and postnatal specialist, to cut through the noise and reveal what actually works—and what could put you and your baby at risk. You will discover the mental game behind staying active during pregnancy, your body's real signals for when to push forward or when to know you are pushing too hard. We discuss the truth about pelvic floor problems that silently affect millions of women but rarely get talked about. Tammy shares why ignoring pelvic floor health now could derail your recovery later and create problems during birth. She reveals what physical therapists do to help strengthen these critical muscles, so you understand that the work they do goes far beyond what most clients ever see or talk about. We tackle the issue every pregnant woman worries about but few discuss openly: abdominal separation (diastasis recti). Learn what you can do during pregnancy to prevent it and how to bounce back faster postpartum. Plus, we expose the truth about pregnancy nutrition. Remember that viral claim about needing only 50,000 extra calories during the entire pregnancy? We break down what that actually looks like and why understanding your body's real needs matters more than ever. Whether you are newly pregnant and wondering if you should quit the gym or modify your workout, or deep into your third trimester second-guessing every movement, this conversation will give you the knowledge to trust your body again. Your pregnancy. Your birth. Your recovery. Press play now—your future self will thank you.
