Sabin Howard is known by many as “The American Michelangelo.” He’s a master sculptor and modern classicist, best known for A Soldier’s Journey, the 58-foot, 38-figure bronze National World War I Memorial in Washington, D.C. Trained in the classics by master teachers, he spent decades teaching, building a studio practice, and pushing figurative sculpture back to its proper place in the public square. His WWI Memorial elevated him from a renowned sculptor to a world-class master. In our conversation, Sabin takes us deep into the psychology of creation. He speaks of purpose over comfort, the “liminal space” where you step into the unknown, and the athlete-level discipline it takes to build mastery. We talk through his early inspiration in Italy at the Medici tomb, the mentors who demanded precision, and why he sees great art as something you construct rather than merely “express.” As he takes us through the story of the WWI Memorial, Sabin describes winning the national bid among hundreds of competitors, then fighting for the vision through years of iteration, resistance, and bureaucratic friction, until the work finally came to rest in the nation’s capital. He then talks about his journey to an unlikely place, a journey westward to the state of Utah, where he pursues his most ambitious project yet. Sabin’s core thesis is simple and intense: public art should be ambitiously scaled, story-driven, and spiritually meaningful. These are the building blocks of creating art that inspires and endures. He’s now aiming even higher with his next monumental project, the Grand Liberty Arch. Watch for his first exclusive walkthrough of the arch, where he breaks down its symbolism, meaning, and grand vision.

    #17 Coach Adam Hall: Tenacious

Coach Adam Hall is the head wrestling coach at Utah Valley University and a former Boise State star who compiled a 122–18 college record, won two Pac-10 titles at 157 pounds, and earned two NCAA All-American finishes. After college, he climbed the coaching ranks through Columbia University and NC State, where he helped develop a national contender with ACC titles and elite recruiting classes. He was hired at UVU in 2024 and, in addition to raising the standard of competition, he quickly raised academic accomplishments in his first year. In this conversation, Coach Hall shares a pivotal moment in his career: the 2011 Pac-10 championship match against Bubba Jenkins. After an initial tough loss to Jenkins earlier that year, he achieved a redemption win in Vegas and now had a shot to face him again for the conference title. A late-season shoulder injury forced a mindset shift before that match; he realized that no one was coming to save him, and he had to adjust, simplify, and execute. He discusses moving from tunnel vision to tactical pauses, emphasizing that success in close matches depends on position, composure, and assertive yet calculated aggression that avoids recklessness. We also get his coach’s playbook and talk about grit vs. stubbornness, why intensity should stay high even when volume drops, and his “diminishing returns” principle (train hard, stop when the work no longer pays off). He shares how he manages high-level (often hard-to-coach) athletes, builds culture through non-negotiables, and prioritizes long-term peaks over short-term ego wins. #15 Michael Ballam: Harmony

Michael Ballam is a world-renowned American tenor, educator, and arts-builder known for 600+ performances in 70+ major roles, including solo performances at the Vatican, Notre Dame, and the White House. At 24, he became the youngest Doctor of Music in Indiana University’s history, then returned home to become the founding general director of Utah Festival Opera & Musical Theatre in Logan, Utah. In this conversation, Michael shares the moment everything re-centered: a major health crisis in 1987 that doctors feared would lead to imminent death. This forced a deeper “thy will be done” consecration, followed immediately by a new mission: saving Logan’s historic Capitol Theatre from demolition, restoring it as the Ellen Eccles Theatre, and building an opera festival designed for more than entertainment. His framework is simple and demanding: the world is already over-entertained. Art should enlighten and edify, sending people out better than they came in. We also explore the craft and leadership behind excellence, the obsession with preparation (including eight-hour practice days and a “study the greats” mentality), the pressure of performing when everything is on the line, and the humility that separates “great” from “greatest.” Plus, the Larry H. Miller night that captures what Michael is trying to give Cache Valley: transcendent excellence, built by hundreds of people, with a place for everybody.
