What do Wonder Woman, the lie detector, BDSM, and a polyamorous relationship between three extraordinary people have in common? William Moulton Marston. In Episode 44 of Power Unleashed, Professor Vesper explores Professor Marston and the Wonder Women (2017), the biographical romantic drama starring Luke Evans, Rebecca Hall, and Bella Heathcote. The film follows psychologist William Marston, his wife Elizabeth, and their assistant Olive as their unconventional relationship develops into a family built around love, sexual exploration, and defiance of social expectations. But who actually holds the power in this relationship? I examine Elizabeth’s dominant personality, Olive’s submissiveness, the psychological dynamics between the three characters, and why I believe the film is ultimately much more a love story about two women than a story about one man with two partners. I also discuss the film’s portrayal of bondage, sadism, polyamory, jealousy, and Marston’s DISC theory, along with the beautiful visual symbolism connecting the characters’ private lives to Wonder Woman’s creation. And although I consider this one of my favorite films, I have some serious complaints about its pacing and the storylines that deserved much more attention. This is an analysis of the relationship as portrayed in the film, rather than a historical investigation into the real Marston family.
