How Much Should You REALLY Be Able to Bench? | Ashleigh Hoeta

Ashleigh Hoeta is the first woman in the world to bench press over 300kg. She's a five-time New Zealand arm wrestling champion. A mother of two, currently studying to become a physio. But her journey to the top started with heartbreak, nearly ended before it began, and was carried by a promise she refused to break. In this episode of ShedLife NZ, Ashleigh sits down for a raw, honest conversation about everything it took to get here. Before any of the records, Ashleigh was a gymnast on a genuine path toward the Commonwealth Games and Olympics, until a short-landed vault tore the ligaments in her foot and ended that dream for good. By her own admission, she's never fully gotten over it. Then in 2020, she suffered a stroke. She describes the moment she tested whether her face still worked by looking in a mirror, only to discover one whole side hadn't moved. Had she gone to sleep that night without getting checked, the outcome could have been very different. Two years later, with her father seriously unwell, Ashleigh made him a promise: she'd become New Zealand's top female powerlifter. He passed away just three weeks after she made that vow. When she finally achieved the goal, the footage shows her screaming, not in celebration, but in grief finally breaking free. From there, Ashleigh explains how her coach turned that pain into fuel during training, the terrifying near-miss just a week before she set the world record, and how she stumbled into arm wrestling almost by accident, only to fall in love with a sport she says has a culture unlike anything else, where rivals become training partners the moment the match ends. In this episode: Losing a gymnastics career that was heading toward the Commonwealth Games and OlympicsThe stroke, and how close it came to being fatalThe promise made to her dying father, and what it cost to keep itTurning grief into fuel under the bar with her coachA near-miss a week before setting the world recordBecoming the first woman in the world to bench over 300kgFalling into arm wrestling, and the humbling wake-up call in TurkeyWhy arm wrestling's culture of rivals-turned-training-partners is unlike any other combat sportAdvice for young women thinking about getting into strength sportThis is a story about grief, resilience, and what it really means to keep a promise. 🎙️ ShedLife NZ Long-form Kiwi conversations with good people working hard, the stories, lessons and laughs behind the life they are building. 👇 Let us know in the comments: Have you ever made a promise to someone that changed the course of your life? Leighton Cosgrave: From Sweeping Floors to Exporting Radix Nutrition from the Waikato, NZ, to the World

Leighton Cosgrove left Hamilton Boys' High at 16 with no real plan, no job lined up, and a simple ultimatum from his dad: you can leave school, but you don't come home until you've found work. What he found instead was a workshop with its doors open — and he offered to sweep the floors for free, just for the chance to learn. In this episode of ShedLife NZ with Jason Davis, Leighton walks through the unlikely path that took him from an unpaid floor-sweeper to General Manager of one of New Zealand's leading nutrition export companies.Leighton pulls back the curtain on the protein industry most Kiwis never think twice about — including the surprising reveal that New Zealand's most popular protein powder brand isn't even made here, with cattle raised in California, processed in the US, packed in India, then shipped back to sit on our own supermarket shelves. He breaks down exactly why grass-fed New Zealand dairy is fundamentally different, and why "New Zealand made" should mean more to us than it currently does.We also get into the story of Radex Nutrition itself — founded by three athletes (a cyclist, a swimmer and a sailor) who got sick of sacrificing nutrition for convenience while training and travelling, built around freeze-drying technology and a deep partnership with Fonterra's own research and development centre. Leighton explains why they chose to manufacture in the Waikato instead of importing, how the business now exports more than it sells domestically into markets like Japan, Hong Kong and China, and how they're using contract manufacturing to help other New Zealand growers — black currants, kale, blueberries — get their products onto shelves around the world. The most honest part of the conversation is Leighton's own career story. After years on the tools as a stainless steel fabricator, a promotion into business development triggered his first ever panic attack. He quit after just five weeks, humbled and certain sales wasn't for him — only to discover that his very first customer visit, a half-built Radex facility, would become the company he'd eventually run.In this episode:Why cheese exists as a byproduct of making whey proteinThe surprising truth about where NZ's most popular protein powder is actually madeGrass-fed vs grain-fed dairy, and why it matters more than people realiseThe origin story of Radex Nutrition and its three athlete foundersWhy they built a manufacturing facility in the Waikato instead of importingHow Radex now exports more product than it sells in New ZealandHelping local growers export through contract freeze-dryingLeaving school at 16 and sweeping workshop floors for freeHis stainless steel apprenticeship and the mentors who shaped himThe panic attack that came with his first promotion into salesHow a failed sales visit to Radex ended up becoming his careerNine years, and the journey from site engineer to General ManagerThis is a story about curiosity, humility, and proving that the trade route can lead just as far as any boardroom pathway.🎙️ ShedLife NZ with Jason DavisLong-form Kiwi conversations with good people working hard, the stories, lessons and laughs behind the life they are building.👇 Let us know in the comments: Have you ever quit something, only to have it come back around in your favour?Subscribe to ShedLife NZ for more Kiwi long-form conversations across rugby, sport, business, fighting and community.#LeightonCosgrove #RadixNutrition #NZManufacturing #WaikatoBusiness #KiwiStories #SupportLocal #LongFormPodcast #NewZealand

Francis Waitai KO’s Cowin Ray | What’s Next for NZ Boxing?

WBA Oceania champion Francis Waitai is back in the ShedLife NZ Studio with his coach Shaun George from Never Surrender, fresh off a first-round knockout of Cowin Ray.We get straight into the fight. Francis and Shaun break down how a game plan they had drilled for weeks ended the contest in about two minutes, what they saw in Cowin Ray, and how a new strength and conditioning program changed the way Francis prepared. There is plenty from behind the scenes too. We talk about the trip to Australia, missing a flight after the motorway was closed overnight, pre-fight blood tests, and the reality of cutting 6 to 7 kg during fight week. Then we get into the wider fight game. David Nyika vs Floyd Masson. Tyson Fury vs Anthony Joshua. Why some fighters seem easier to knock out once they have been properly switched off. And why New Zealand has such a strong history of producing strikers, going all the way back to Bob Fitzsimmons. But this yarn is about a lot more than boxing.Francis talks about leaving school with nothing, what that decision can cost you over the next ten years, and the point where he decided to go back and change direction. Shaun also takes us through the work Never Surrender is doing with Hauraki Plains College, building a programme aimed at reconnecting disengaged young people with school, discipline and a better path forward. It is a good boxing yarn, but there are plenty of lessons in here about preparation, discipline, setbacks and backing young people before they get too far off track.
