How to Measure Business Success (Beyond Just Profit)

What does a successful business actually look like? For a long time, we tend to measure success with one number: money. More revenue, more profit, a bigger business. But if growing our businesses requires sacrificing our health, relationships, or all of our available time, are we really winning? In this episode of Solopreneur Life, we introduce the Solopreneur Scorecard, a new way for us to measure business success beyond just profit. The scorecard looks at six important areas: owning our time, money, business, health, relationships, and contribution. We’ll walk through each category, including where things are going well and where there may be room to improve. We also explore the "14-day test" for determining whether we truly own our businesses, why finding our "enough number" can help us stop endlessly chasing more revenue, and how improving one area of our lives can create a positive ripple effect across the others. If we’re trying to build profitable one-person businesses without turning them into another demanding 50 or 60-hour-per-week job, this episode can help us redefine what success really looks like. How to Avoid Burnout (Without Slowing Down Your Business) | Elizabeth Svoboda

The Art of Pacing by Elizabeth Svoboda: https://amzn.to/43PQFBk (Amazon affiliate) As solopreneurs, it can feel like we always need to be pushing harder, working longer, and giving 110%. But what if slowing down at the right moments actually helps us accomplish more? In this episode of Solopreneur Life, we sit down with award-winning science writer Elizabeth Svoboda, author of The Art of Pacing, to explore how we can find a healthier middle ground between the endless sprint and complete disengagement. Elizabeth shares what entrepreneurs can learn from elite athletes about balancing intense effort with meaningful recovery. We discuss why the cycle of overworking and crashing is so difficult to break, how chronic stress can affect our health, and why working more hours doesn't necessarily mean getting more done. We also explore the idea of "rigid flexibility," how to build real recovery into our workweeks, why scrolling social media isn't necessarily rest, and how pacing ourselves can help us build businesses we actually have the energy to enjoy for years to come. If we're trying to build a one-person business that supports our life, not the other way around, learning when to push and when to recover may be one of the most important skills we can develop. How Much Cash Should I Keep in My Business?

How much cash should we keep in our business? As our businesses grow, it can feel reassuring to watch that business bank balance get bigger. But at some point, we need to ask an important question: What job is this additional dollar doing by staying in the business? In this episode of Solopreneur Life, we break down a simple framework for deciding how much cash to keep in a small business. We look at four important buckets: operating cash, taxes, a business emergency fund, and money set aside for growth opportunities. We also discuss why keeping three to six months of necessary business expenses in an emergency fund can provide more than financial security. It can give us the time and flexibility to make better decisions when revenue drops, a major client leaves, or our business needs to pivot. Finally, we explore what to do when all of those needs are covered and we still have excess cash. Because our goal isn't just to build a business with a big bank account. We want to build profitable businesses that help us grow our wealth, own more of our time, and create the lives we actually want to live.
