The Table We Grew Up At

Brittany Kavi

We’re siblings — and we grew up around the table. Some of our best memories started there. Our dinners were never quiet or serious — they were loud, funny, and full of life. We can still picture our mom giving Dad that look like, “These are your kids. Are you going to do something about them?” Around that table, we talked about everything — life, love, heartbreak, faith, and sometimes we even worked out our frustrations there. It wasn’t always perfect, but it was real, and it was ours. Now, we each have our own tables with our families — but there’s something special about coming home. So we’re bringing that same energy to a new table — a virtual one — where we can laugh, reflect, and share stories about growing up in the Anabaptist world. That world shaped us in both beautiful and challenging ways. We’ve wrestled, questioned, and grown — and through it all, we’ve found that God shows up in every part of the journey. Our hope is that this podcast encourages you, makes you think, reminds you of truth, and gives you a few laughs along the way. So, pull up a chair — there’s always room at the table.

Episode 21: The Woman at the Table

A quick heads-up: This episode touches on some sensitive topics and experiences related to women, faith, community expectations, and our upbringing. Nothing graphic or urgent, but some of the conversation may feel personal or bring up difficult memories for some listeners. Take care of yourself as you listen, and feel free to pause or come back to it when you're ready.   In Part Two of our conversation about women in Anabaptist culture, Brittany and Kourtney sit down together to talk about the female experience within the community—the expectations, roles, messages, and unspoken rules that shaped what it meant to be a woman.   We talk about the things women were expected to carry, the ways femininity was defined, the role women played in church and community life, and the messages we absorbed about our voices, choices, appearance, relationships, and worth.   Some of these experiences were beautiful. Some were complicated. Some made sense to us at the time and look different now.   This isn't about painting an entire culture with one brush. It's about making space for an honest conversation about our own experiences and asking questions about the things we were taught.   Because sometimes you don't realize what you believed about being a woman until you step outside of the culture that taught it to you. So, pull up a chair. Brittany and Kourtney are at the table for this one.   ✨ Resource Links Sign up to stay connected to The Table We Grew Up At.
