The Lac La Belle Shipwreck: The Steamer That Sank Twice

In October 1872, the wooden steamer Lac La Belle left Milwaukee for what should have been a routine crossing of Lake Michigan to Grand Haven. But as a gale built through the night, the ship began taking on water. Captain W. H. Thompson turned back toward Milwaukee, but the storm only grew worse. Soon, water reached the boiler fires, the engines died, and the Lac La Belle was left powerless in the dark.By morning, passengers and crew abandoned ship in lifeboats as the steamer slipped stern-first beneath Lake Michigan. But the strangest part of the Lac La Belle story is this: it was not the first time she had sunk.Built in Cleveland in 1864, the Lac La Belle had already gone down once after a violent collision in the St. Clair River in 1866. She was raised, rebuilt, returned to service — and then lost again in one of Lake Michigan’s most haunting shipwreck stories. For nearly 150 years, the Lac La Belle remained missing. Then, in 2022, shipwreck hunter Paul Ehorn and Bruce Bittner located the wreck using side-scan sonar. The discovery was publicly announced in 2026, revealing the long-lost steamer resting upright and mostly intact beneath Lake Michigan. This is the story of the Lac La Belle — the Great Lakes steamer that sank twice, vanished for almost a century and a half, and finally gave up her secret.#Shipwreck #GreatLakes #LakeMichigan #LacLaBelle #LakeEffectShipwrecks #GreatLakesHistory #ShipwreckDiscovery #MaritimeHistory #Milwaukee #grandhaven
