The Power of the Word: Nature, Justice, and Storytelling | With C. Lee McKenzie

In this episode of the Energy of Serenity Podcast, host Donna McDonough sits down with author C. Lee McKenzie for a conversation about writing, nature, generational connection, and the quiet power of choosing our words with care. It's a warm, reflective episode that moves easily between craft and life, and by the end, you'll understand why Lee's books stay with readers long after the last page. C. Lee McKenzie is a native Californian who grew up in several different places before settling in the Santa Cruz Mountains, the state she calls home. She is the author of young adult novels including Double Negative, Sudden Secrets, and Not Guilty and has 13 published books to her name. Outside of writing, Lee is an avid gardener, hiker, and yoga practitioner, and she travels whenever she can. Donna, who has known Lee for around 15 years, introduces her as a nature advocate whose walks and quiet moments often become part of her creative process, making her an especially thoughtful guest for a conversation about where stories come from and why they matter. Much of the episode centers on Lee's approach to character and story. Donna and Lee talk about how lived experience from adolescence through adulthood often becomes the raw material for Lee's fiction and how that grounding in real emotion is part of what makes her characters feel so true to life. The conversation turns to Not Guilty, which Donna describes as a story about justice and about giving voice to people who might otherwise go unheard the kind of book that makes a reader want to sit up and act. Woven throughout is a recurring idea: that words carry real weight, that kindness shown in small moments (a hello, a held door) can ripple outward in ways we never see, and that young readers absorb these lessons through story in a way that stays with them. The discussion also touches on the writing life itself, being part of critique groups for fresh perspective, the road to publication, working with editors and publishers, and the reality that even careful writers need another set of eyes to catch what they can't see in their own work. Donna and Lee also talk about intergenerational connection, a theme that surfaces in Lee's writing and in Donna's own family life, and about the value of unhurried practices like yoga and walking as a way to quiet the mind between periods of writing. The episode closes with practical, encouraging advice for anyone who wants to write but feels stuck: start with a single sentence, and let the momentum build from there. In this episode, you'll learn: Writing from Real Life: How personal experience from different stages of life can shape authentic, believable characters. The Story Behind Not Guilty: How a young adult novel can tackle themes of justice and give a voice to those who feel unheard. Small Words, Lasting Ripples: Why simple acts of kindness, a hello, and holding a door matter more than we often realize. Letting Conflict Breathe: Why not resolving a story's tension too quickly makes it feel more honest and true to life? The Value of Critique Groups: How fresh eyes on a work in progress can help a writer move past being stuck. Bridging Generations: How connection across age groups, young and old alike, offers something valuable in both directions. The Publishing Journey: A candid look at working with editors and publishers and why the process takes patience. Starting Small to Write More: Practical Advice for Overcoming the Urge to Overthink Begin with one sentence and build from there. This conversation is a reminder that stories rooted in real emotion and the simple, deliberate choice to speak and write with kindness can leave a lasting mark on the people who encounter them. Whether you're a longtime reader of young adult fiction, an aspiring writer, or simply someone who believes in the quiet power of words, this episode offers a gentle nudge to slow down, pay attention, and start writing that first sentence today. Into the Heart of Reiki: Healing, Horses, and Messages from the Other Side | with Kerstin Schnock

What happens when a chronic illness leads someone to rediscover intuitive gifts they'd hidden for most of their life? In this episode of the Energy of Serenity Podcast, host Donna McDine welcomes author and Certified Medical Reiki Master Kerstin Schnock for a conversation full of remarkable stories, from healing horses across continents to a spirit visit in a misty forest, woven around one central idea: the power of finally speaking your truth out loud. Kerstin is the author of Into the Heart of Reiki: A Personal Journey Through Reiki's Mysteries. Born in Germany, she immigrated to San Francisco to study political science and international relations before settling in the Netherlands, where she worked as an international sales manager. After being diagnosed with a chronic illness and refusing to rely solely on traditional medication, Kerstin turned to Reiki, a decision that reawakened intuitive abilities she'd suppressed since childhood. She went on to become a Reiki master, train as an international holistic horse therapist, and in February 2026 achieve her long-held goal of becoming a certified medical Reiki master, the very training where she and Donna first met. Much of the conversation traces Kerstin's path from skepticism to advocacy. She describes the acupuncturist who first told her she had the gift of a healer, the Reiki master who treated her with patience rather than pressure, and the slow realization that her pain and symptoms were easing even though she rarely felt anything dramatic during sessions. She talks candidly about spending roughly 50 years hiding her intuitive abilities after being treated poorly by her parents for having them and how writing her book under her own name, unlike two earlier novels, became a way of finally stepping out of that silence. She also shares the more complicated reality of living with her condition today: a supportive physician who works alongside her Reiki practice and a specialist who dismisses it entirely and has suggested she needs psychiatric care. The episode's most striking moments come from Kerstin's work with horses, a species she once feared despite never planning to work with them. She recounts sending distant Reiki to a horse named Star suffering from a painful autoimmune condition, using only a photo, a name, and a location, and watching the animal's symptoms clear dramatically within a week. She also shares a harder story: sensing a serious, undiagnosed problem in a shelter horse's head during a session, later confirmed by X-ray to be an inoperable tumor, and a quiet, unexpected encounter with that same horse's spirit some days later during a walk in the woods. Throughout, Kerstin returns to a consistent philosophy: she is not a healer but a facilitator of energy, and every client, human or animal, deserves clear words, real consent, and honest expectations about what a session can and cannot do. In this episode, you'll learn: Reawakening Suppressed Intuitive Gifts: How a chronic illness diagnosis led Kerstin back to abilities she'd hidden since childhoodHealing Without Immediate Sensation: Why Reiki's effects often show up as calm and reduced symptoms, not dramatic in-session feelingsThe Courage to Write Under Her Own Name: Why publishing without a pen name marked a step out of decades of secrecyWorking Alongside, Not Against, Traditional Medicine: How Kerstin manages her condition with a supportive physician, despite skepticism elsewhereDistance Reiki Across Continents: How a photo, a name, and a location supported a horse's healing from thousands of miles awaySensing What Veterinary Exams Miss: Identifying a serious, undiagnosed issue in a horse before it was confirmed by imagingA Spirit's Farewell: An unexpected encounter that offered reassurance and closure after a horse's passingFacilitator, Not Healer: Why Kerstin insists on clear communication, consent, and realistic expectations with every clientThis conversation is a reminder that the gifts we're taught to hide are often exactly what the world needs from us, and that healing, in all its forms, often begins the moment we stop staying quiet. From Survivor to Advocate: Healing Trauma with Reiki, Animals & Listening | Donnalynn Scillieri

What does it take to walk out of an abusive marriage, rebuild an entire life, and then spend decades helping others find their own way out? In this episode of the Energy of Serenity Podcast, host Donna McDine sits down with professor, advocate, and Reiki Master Donnalynn Scillieri for a conversation spanning deep personal history and hard-won professional wisdom. It's a story about survival, and even more, about what happens next: how Donnalynn turned her darkest chapter into a life devoted to helping others, both human and animal, find safety and voice. Donnalynn is a professor of sociology and women's and gender studies at a New Jersey state university and a speaker specializing in gender-based violence, with work spanning collaborations with the NJ Coalition to End Domestic Violence, the FBI, the ASPCA, and animal rescue groups. She holds a BFA and MA, with studies in Buddhism, ancient Egyptian traditions, and Native American cultures. After adopting her rescue dog Sasha, a catalyst for her own healing, she became a Usui Reiki master, expanding into animal Reiki, pendulum work, chakra balancing, and crystal healing. She's also a certified adult mental health first aid provider (National Council for Mental Wellbeing, via Rutgers), with a background spanning Wall Street trading, arts management, grant writing, and decades of advocacy. After 14.5 years in a marriage marked by addiction and abuse, Donnalynn left with her children and rebuilt her life through graduate school, grant writing for domestic violence organizations, and eventually direct advocacy, sitting with victims at police stations and hospitals as restraining orders are processed. She describes staying anonymous, listening rather than speaking for victims, and helping people stay calm enough to give the statement a judge needs. The conversation also explores how animal abuse often signals abuse elsewhere in a household and how her Reiki work with animals can reveal problems in a pet's environment. She discusses Buddhist practice in her healing, including chanting for her ex-husband's well-being and her own forgiveness. A recurring theme: brief encounters with a stranger's comment or a mentor's push can be the seed someone needs to keep moving forward. In this episode, you'll learn: Turning Personal Survival Into Professional Purpose: How leaving abuse led to decades of advocacy workThe Power of Listening Over Speaking: Why advocates focus on listening, not speaking for victimsWhere Animal Abuse and Domestic Violence Intersect: How one often signals the otherReiki as a Window Into an Animal's Environment: How sessions can reveal caretaker problemsComplementing, Not Replacing, Medical Care: Why Reiki supports, not substitutes, professional treatmentThis conversation reminds us that even in our darkest moments, someone a stranger, a mentor, a rescue dog may be quietly planting the seed that helps us find our way through. The M.O.V.E. Method: How to Stop Overthinking and Start Living Your Purpose | With Dr. Michelle Barr

What if the thing standing between you and the life you want isn't a lack of a plan but a decision you haven't fully made yet?  In this episode of the Energy of Serenity Podcast, host Donna McDine sits down with spiritual business and life coach Dr. Michelle Barr for a conversation about what actually moves people forward: not more information, but decision, alignment, and the willingness to trust your own desires. It's an energizing, deeply practical conversation for anyone who feels like they know what they want but can't quite get out of their own way. Dr. Michelle Barr is a spiritual business and life coach for women entrepreneurs and the creator of the M.O.V.E. Method, a framework she developed after years of clients and colleagues asking her to put into words how she actually helps people change their lives. A personal transformation specialist for over 30 years and a former therapist, Michelle has run her own coaching business for 18 years as an author, speaker, and teacher. Donna has known Michelle for roughly a decade, starting as a student in one of her workshops, and speaks from firsthand experience about how directly Michelle's guidance shaped the direction of her own practice, making this a conversation grounded not just in theory but in lived results. At the center of the episode is the M.O.V.E. Method itself: Make a decision, Own it 100%, Visualize where you want to be, and Execute through inspired, aligned action. Michelle walks through why so many people stay stuck in "I'm going to" or "I'm thinking about" language instead of actually starting and why the real turning point isn't a five-step plan but a single decision fully committed to. She also talks about what trips people up once they do start moving: the unconscious patterns, old trauma, and unresolved beliefs that quietly work against forward motion and why clearing that internal static is just as important as accountability and action. The conversation moves into some of Michelle's core philosophies: that "the obstacle is the path," meaning the very thing you think is blocking you is often exactly what you need to work through; that desire itself is trustworthy and that "wherever there is a desire, a way has already been made"; and that rest is not the opposite of momentum but part of it. Extreme self-care, she explains, keeps energy open rather than shutting it down. Donna and Michelle also discuss Michelle's books, including Soul Teach and Loving What's Next, and her upcoming release built around the M.O.V.E. Method itself, along with the idea that growth isn't linear but spiral: you return to familiar territory again and again, each time from a slightly different place. In this episode, you'll learn: The M.O.V.E. Method Explained: How to make a decision, own it, and execute work together to create real forward motion. Why Deciding Beats Planning: How committing fully to one decision creates more progress than an elaborate multi-step plan. Clearing What's Uncleared, Unhealed, and Unresolved: Why the patterns running beneath the surface often matter more than willpower alone. "The Obstacle Is the Path": Why the very thing you think is in your way is often exactly what needs to be worked through. Trusting Your Desires: The belief that wherever there is a genuine desire, a way forward has already been made. This conversation is a reminder that the path forward rarely requires a perfect plan, just one honest decision, taken fully, again and again. If you've ever felt like you know exactly what you want but can't quite make the leap, this episode with Dr. Michelle Barr offers both the permission and the process to finally move. Bearing Witness: How Memoir Heals, Connects, and Gives Voice to the Unspoken | With Lorraine Ash

What happens when we finally put our story to paper, the one we've carried quietly for years, sometimes decades?  In this episode of the Energy of Serenity Podcast, host Donna McDine sits down with author, editor, and memoir coach Lorraine Ash for a conversation about the healing power of storytelling. It's a moving, honest discussion about grief, resilience, and the courage it takes to say "this happened to me" out loud and why doing so can change not only the writer's life but also the lives of readers they'll never meet. Lorraine Ash is a book editor and author coach who specializes in autobiography and memoir writing. She has written two memoirs of her own, Life Touches Life: A Mother's Story of Stillbirth and Healing and Self and Soul: On Creating a Meaningful Life, and most recently edited the award-winning anthology Corona City: Voices from an Epicenter, which gathers first-person accounts from 65 writers chronicling life in the New York and New Jersey COVID-19 epicenter. A graduate of Fordham University and California State University, Long Beach, Lorraine now lives in New Jersey, where she continues to teach memoir workshops and lead a career that spans journalism, ghostwriting, editing, and teaching all rooted, as she puts it, in the same literary continuum of helping voice come through. Much of the conversation centers on Life Touches Life, the memoir Lorraine wrote after losing her daughter at full term and nearly losing her own life during the birth. She talks candidly about the isolation of stillbirth, an experience she describes as cloaked in invisibility, and about the decision to publish a story many in the industry initially saw as too difficult. That decision, made possible by publisher Maureen Michelson of New Sage Press, ended up traveling to 18 countries and connecting Lorraine to mothers around the world, including a reader who, decades after her own stillbirth in the 1960s, wrote to ask if the loss had truly not been her fault. It's a striking reminder of how long silence can last and how much relief a single honest book can offer. The conversation also explores what Lorraine calls "braided memoir," weaving personal experience together with research, science, or wider cultural context so an individual story resonates as part of something larger. She reflects on her work editing Corona City, the friendships and closeness that formed even through early Zoom readings, and why she sees writing and testifying to our own corner of the world as something close to a moral responsibility: if we don't tell our own stories accurately, she notes, someone else will, and that's often where misunderstanding and prejudice take root. Lorraine and Donna also discuss the emotional release many workshop participants experience when they finally put pen to paper, and Lorraine shares a striking exercise from a yoga retreat that revealed how much of our inner critical voice isn't even our own. In this episode, you'll learn: Why Every Story Deserves to Be Told: How even ordinary lives touch on universal themes, and why that makes every personal story worth writing. The Healing Power of "Braided Memoir": How weaving personal experience with outside research or cultural context can deepen a story's impact. Turning Grief Into Connection: How Lorraine's memoir on stillbirth and healing reached readers in 18 countries and offered comfort across generations. You Are Not Alone: Why hearing someone else's honest account of loss can dissolve decades of silent guilt. Bearing Witness as a Moral Act: Why documenting our own experience authentically helps prevent misunderstanding and division. The Emotional Release of Writing: Why putting words on paper, even without any intention to publish, can be deeply therapeutic. Filtering Out the Noise: A yoga retreat exercise that reveals how many of our thoughts aren't truly our own. Living Inside the Web of Story: How paying attention to where our words and reactions come from can change how we move through daily life. This episode is a gentle, powerful reminder that our stories, even the ones we've been afraid to tell, carry the power to heal, to connect, and to help someone else feel less alone. If you've ever wondered whether your own experience is "worth" putting into words, this conversation with Lorraine Ash offers a clear and comforting answer: it already is. Connect with Donna McDine. From inspiring young students in the classroom to stepping into a gym for the very first time, this episode is a beautiful reminder that it's never too late to rewrite your story. My guest, Lori Sims, is an educator, education writer, and passionate advocate for building both strong minds and strong bodies. These insights are especially meaningful for anyone navigating change, rebuilding confidence, or looking for inspiration to embrace a new chapter in life. In this episode, you’ll learn: The Power of Encouraging Words: How simple phrases like "I'm proud of you" and "You've got this" can create lasting confidence and transform lives. Strength Beyond the Scale: Why building muscle, resilience, and self-belief matters far more than chasing a number. Overcoming the Inner Critic: How shifting negative self-talk into empowering thoughts can change the way you approach challenges. It's Never Too Late to Begin: Why stepping into unfamiliar spaces, whether it's a classroom, a new career, or a gym, can open doors you never imagined. From newborn wellness and breastfeeding guidance to the importance of emotional connection and self-care, this episode shines a light on the holistic approach to nurturing both babies and the families who love them. Healing Through Connection and Touch: Why gentle therapeutic approaches and human connection can promote relaxation, comfort, and healthy development for newborns and their families. Supporting the Whole Family: How including fathers, grandparents, and caregivers creates a nurturing environment where everyone feels empowered. Finding Confidence Through Trusted Guidance: How expert education and compassionate care help new parents quiet the noise and trust their own instincts. This episode is an invitation to embrace support, release the pressure of having to do everything perfectly, and remember that asking for help is one of the greatest acts of strength.
