    13. The unspoken, not-so-pretty sides of working for yourself

Social media makes entrepreneurship look SO glamorous. You don't have to listen to a boss, you can make your own schedule, you can go to the beach on a Tuesday. But just like literally anything in life, it's not all that it's made out to be online. Today we're talking about the unspoken sides of entrepreneurship: the behind-the-scenes, not-so-pretty stuff that people are afraid to talk about because it can make you seem like less of a professional business owner. Which I just don't think is the case. We're all human beings. I don't have it all figured out. Nobody does, and if they say they do, they're lying! And just to be clear, this episode is not meant to scare you out of starting a business. I would choose running my own business all day, any day. It's more of a heads-up on what you'll most likely experience at one point or another, so you have the tools to deal with it when it shows up. In this episode, we're getting into: Feeling isolated as a solopreneurThe fear that if you hit the brakes, your whole business will crumbleNot being able to relax on vacationWhy mistakes feel SO much bigger when it's your own businessComparison and burnoutHow I'm coping and how you can too Links mentioned in this episode 03: The 5 Boundaries I Set in My Business to Avoid Burnout11. 12. We're overcomplicating blogging with Priscilla from Kinfolk Creative

Blogging is not my specialty. I’ve never committed to it for a long enough period of time in my business, and I know I'm not the only one. Especially with photographers, there's always that debate of "should I be blogging, should I not?" Social media gives us that instant gratification, and I can create an Instagram post way faster than a blog post. But if I just spent more time creating one really good blog post, I wouldn't need to make those five Instagram posts. Some of my TikToks take 30 minutes to film and two hours to edit… at that rate I could have written a blog instead! I've also been brainwashed into thinking the sole focus of blogging is SEO, so I brought in the expert to break down the biggest misconceptions. Her answer to basically all of them is, “it's not that serious.” You're already creating blogworthy content on social media, you're just posting it in places that disappear a lot quicker. And if you're a perfectionist like us, she has a challenge for you: publish a blog with literally one word! Priscilla is a therapist-turned-copywriter and one half of Kinfolk Creative (the other half is her husband Zach, aka SEO guy), where she helps creatives turn their ideas into blogs and website copy that builds connection, not just content. In this episode, we're getting into: The 8 biggest blogging misconceptions, including "blogging is dead" and "you have to be a good writer to blog"You're already creating blogworthy content on social media, you're just posting it in places that disappear a lot quickerSEO for blogging explainedWhat AI search means for your blogsYour audience can feel it when you write for GoogleThe 4 types of blogs every website should have: nurture, conversion, awareness, and retention/upsellHow long it takes to see results from blogging Links mentioned in this episode The Publishing House (Priscilla's done-with-you blogging membership - use COUPON CODE: asyoushould for $25 off!) 11. We're back (and we're talking money) with my accountant Zsofia Alfonso

It’s been a minute! My last episode was back in April, and so much has happened since then. Wedding season, I got engaged, and then I ended up taking a break I didn't even know I needed until I was in it. I'd been operating in total overdrive without realizing it. But we're back, and a few things are different this time around. I'm no longer doing seasons. This is just an ongoing show now, still dropping every other week on Tuesdays, straight to your Substack inbox. I hired a podcast editor, and I've had Meg helping me with ideation on the backend. Having that structure and those deadlines is exactly what I needed. So let's get into the first episode back. For this one, I brought on my accountant and tax advisor, Zsofia Alfonso. If you're a creative business owner, you probably got into this because you're good at the craft, not because you love spreadsheets, so Zsofia is here to help us out with that! Quick disclaimer before we jump in: everyone's business is different, so please take this as guidance and education, not a replacement for your own professional advice. Zsofia Alfonso is a business owner and professor. For the past 15 years, she's been the principal at ABL & Co. Tax and Accounting, where she and her team simplify the financial life for small, service-based businesses, handling everything from tax preparation to payroll and bookkeeping (mine included). She's passionate about supporting the growth of small business owners and brings insight from ABL & Co.'s 25 years of experience starting and running businesses. In this episode, we're getting into: Why a separate business bank account matters from day one, even if your creative business is still a side hustleSole proprietor vs. LLCLLC vs. S-CorpThe IRS's one real rule on write-offs, and how to tell if something countsSigns it's time to bring in a tax pro instead of DIY-ing it Tools mentioned in this episode ZenBusiness — the service Maddie used to register her own LLCApply for an EIN — free, direct through the IRS How to connect with Zsofia: Website: www.ablandco.com/meet-our-team Email: zsofia@ablandco.com LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/zsofia-alfonso-6546b7 Facebook (ABL & Co.): www.facebook.com/ablandco Have more questions after listening? 07. So you want to start a creative business...

If you’ve ever thought about starting a creative business but immediately felt overwhelmed by where to begin… you’re not alone! I get messages about this all the time. People have an idea — photography, baking, vintage reselling, design, handmade products — but the question is always the same: “Okay… but where do I actually start?” When I started my photography business, I didn’t have a perfect plan, a big audience, or unlimited time. But within six months, I had built a fully booked wedding photography business. Not because I did everything right — but because I focused on a few things that actually matter when you’re starting out. In this week’s episode of As You Should, I’m breaking down the first five steps I recommend taking if you want to start a creative business. 06. Answering All of Your Social Media Questions

You asked & I’m answering! In this week’s episode of As You Should, we’re having a candid conversation about how and why to use social media to marketing your business In this episode we’re diving into: * How you can use social media to market your small business and grow an engaged community * What showing up consistently can look like * How to come up with content ideas people actually want to see And sooo much more :) Why this matters I’ve used social media to market my photography business since day 1, and it’s the sole reason I was able to grow, quit my corporate job in 6 months, and work with aligned clients on repeat. Saying “you’re bad at social media” is like saying you’re bad at painting, or singing, or any other skill — you can get better with practice! Now more than ever it’s so important to understand how to use social media to market your business since it’s where your dream customers are every single day, and this episode will give you the tools to view your social media presence with a fresh perspective.
