    What does safeguarding really look like in a school? We know the language. Protect the child. Report concerns. Keep children safe. But what happens when safeguarding gets uncomfortable? What if the person crossing the boundary is a teacher? What if the behaviour doesn't look abusive—but something about it doesn't feel right? What if a teacher's intention is good, but the impact on a child isn't? What if you notice something concerning about a colleague? And what if the person who needs support and protection is the teacher? In this episode of The Teacher Podcast, I sit down with Maureen Semakula Kizito Namugayi, an educator and safeguarding professional with 24 years of experience across teaching, school leadership, curriculum and child protection. Together, we go beyond the usual safeguarding conversation. We talk about the things that happen in schools that we have become so used to that we no longer question them. We explore discipline, boundaries, teacher blind spots, power, professional responsibility and what happens when a teacher becomes the risk. But we also turn the lens around. Because a safe school cannot be built by protecting children while ignoring the wellbeing, vulnerability and safety of the adults who work there.     Beyond the Classroom: How One Headteacher Transformed a Community

    What is the true role of a teacher? Is it simply to teach lessons and prepare learners for exams, or is it something much bigger? In this inspiring episode of The Teacher Podcast , we sit down with Bernah Siminyu, a former Headteacher of Mugulu High School, whose leadership did not transform only a school but an entire community. When Bernah was posted to Mugulu High School, she quickly recognized that many learners were struggling to stay in school due to extreme poverty and the growing challenge of early pregnancies.     The African Traveling Teacher: A Movement Bigger Than One Classroom

    Born and raised in the hills of Kisoro, Francis journeyed to Makerere University to pursue a degree in Education, specializing in English and Literature, originally with dreams of becoming a journalist. But along the way, a powerful encounter with an exceptional lecturer transformed how he viewed teaching, causing him to fall in love with the profession he had once seen only as a pathway to something else. Driven by a deep desire to transform education and restore the dignity of the teaching profession, Francis went on to found the Teachers Empowerment Platform and later launched The African Travelling Teacher - an initiative dedicated to traveling across countries, discovering extraordinary educators, amplifying their stories, and building meaningful connections among teachers around the world.
