TIMESTAMPS:0:00 - Intro0:40 - Holly Hill Mall Bunker2:39 - Mark Your Calendars5:30 - Editor's Picks7:32 - Curated Weekly Calendar9:22 - OutroThis week on the Localite Podcast, we’ve got hockey, ceramics, beer runs, card shows, and a little local mystery! In our Anecdotal Note, Tyler dives into a rather unexpected piece of Burlington history: apparently, there’s a Cold War-era bunker underneath Holly Hill Mall. Burlington was once considered a potential Cold War target, which naturally raises the question: what other weird stuff is hiding around Alamance County? A missile silo under the Haw River? A portal to Narnia at Granddaddy’s Antique Mall? We investigate absolutely none of these claims, but we do ask the important questions. For Mark Your Calendars, hockey season is back in the Triad! On Friday, October 16th, the Greensboro Gargoyles will host their Opening Night & Hockey for Hunger event, presented by Sunshine Creations. Tickets are $20, and if 1,000 seats are sold by October 1st, the Gargoyles will award Sunshine Creations $10,000 to help launch their outreach program, beginning with the reopening of their food pantry and Christmas toy assistance for families in need. We’re also looking ahead to the Red Oak Race Fest on Sunday, October 25th at Red Oak Lager Haus. The event features a 5K, Beer Mile, and costume contest, followed by the opportunity to hang out at the Lager Haus and Biergarten. Because apparently running and drinking are now a legitimate athletic combination. Then, in this week’s Curated Calendar, brought to you by Smiley Plumbing Company: service that leaves you smiling, we’ve got two very different ways to spend your weekend. On Friday, October 2nd, the Artist Co-Op in Gibsonville is hosting a Pumpkin Mug Ceramic/Handbuilding Class. No pottery experience is necessary, and for $50 you’ll get everything you need to turn a slab of clay into your very own one-of-a-kind pumpkin mug. Then on Saturday, October 3rd, it’s time for the Burlington Card Show, presented by POW Productions at the Alliance Convention Center. Whether you’re into sports cards, Pokémon, One Piece, Magic, or general memorabilia, it’s an all-hobbies, all-day event. Admission is $5, kids 12 and under get in free, and there will be $1,000 in hourly giveaways.A big shoutout to our friends at Totally Awesome Comics in Mebane for putting us onto the Card Show.
