The History of Croatia: Kingdoms, Conflict, and Modern Europe — Fexingo History

Fexingo

From the medieval kingdom of Tomislav to the gunfire that shattered Yugoslavia, Croatia’s story is a hinge of European history. Lucas and Luna guide listeners through a thousand years of shifting borders, dynastic struggles, and cultural survival. They explore the rise of the Trpimirović dynasty, the personal union with Hungary, and the long shadow of the Ottoman advance — including the pivotal 1566 Battle of Szigetvár and the enduring legacy of the Military Frontier. The show examines Dubrovnik’s golden age as a maritime republic, the Illyrian movement’s 19th-century national revival, and the turbulent 20th century: the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, the Ustaše regime, Tito’s federation, and the bitter Homeland War of the 1990s. Each episode unpacks how geography — the Adriatic coast, the Dinaric Alps, the Pannonian plain — shaped a nation caught between empires. No episode is complete without discussing Croatian cultural touchstones: the Glagolitic script, the UNESCO-protected klapa singing, and the stone walls of Ston. By the end, you’ll understand why Croatia’s past still echoes in its EU membership, its border disputes, and its quest for identity in a united Europe. This is a history of resilience, not just a list of kings and treaties. #Croatia #CroatianHistory #MedievalEurope #DubrovnikRepublic #TrpimirovicDynasty #OttomanWars #BattleOfSzigetvar #IllyrianMovement #AustroHungarianEmpire #KingdomOfYugoslavia #Ustase #Tito #HomelandWar #GlagoliticScript #KlapaSinging #AdriaticSea #FexingoHistory #History Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo

Stjepan Radić: The Peasant King Who Shook Croatia

In 1928, Stjepan Radić, founder of the Croatian Peasant Party, was gunned down on the floor of the Yugoslav parliament in Belgrade. His assassination sent shockwaves through Croatia and deepened the rift between Croats and Serbs. But Radić's story begins long before that fatal June day. He was born into a poor peasant family in Trebovec, near Sisak, in 1871. He studied in Zagreb and Prague, absorbing ideas about peasant self-governance and national rights. In 1904, he founded the Croatian Peasant Party, which grew into the most popular political movement in Croatia. Radić advocated for a federal Yugoslavia where Croats would have autonomy, but his vision clashed with Belgrade's centralism. He was imprisoned multiple times, even before the assassination attempt. This episode explores Radić's rise, his ideology of 'republika seljačka' (peasant republic), his fraught relationship with King Alexander Karađorđević, and the legacy of his death. We also look at the Vidovdan Constitution of 1921, which excluded the peasant party, and the subsequent St. Vitus Day dictatorship. Radić's murder in the Sabor building marked a turning point in Yugoslav history, leading to the eventual collapse of the First Yugoslavia. Join Lucas and Luna as they trace the life of a man who gave voice to Croatia's rural majority and paid the ultimate price for his convictions. #StjepanRadić #HrvatskaSeljačkaStranka #CroatianPeasantParty #Vidovdan #Yugoslavia #Belgrade #Sabor #1928 #Trebovec #PunišaRačić #KingAlexander #PeasantRepublic #Federalism #Interwar #BalkanHistory #Croatia #History #FexingoHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
