But make no mistake: their road to success was neither easy nor direct. It was a bumpy ride, but one they recall with humour, grace and gratitude. Sisters Mo and Michelle Mokone share their incredible story, which started with a folded paper swan at a market stall. After a stint at international markets, a stay in Switzerland and hitting rock bottom on their return to South Africa, they hustled their way to becoming one of Africa’s largest exporters of handcrafted décor. Today, they supply global and local retailers including Crate & Barrel, CB2, Target, Woolworths Home, @Home and Mr Price Home, while employing around 300 people, the overwhelming majority of them women.
