    What's next with skill games now that they're illegal in Pennsylvania?

    Skill games are now illegal in Pennsylvania. The change comes after state lawmakers couldn’t reach a deal to tax and regulate the devices -- which resemble slot machines -- and three legislators failed in their attempt to convince the state Supreme Court to allow more time to figure it out.  The justices had already given the General Assembly 120 days to do so back in June, when they ruled the devices are illegal – and stayed that decision to afford the legislature an opportunity to develop regulations.     Surging black lung rates concentrated among miners in Pennsylvania, other Appalachian states

    A new study found that rates for black lung disease in Appalachia – including in Pennsylvania – are surging. The findings come as the Trump administration has put regulations that could reduce miners’ exposure to the dust associated with the disease on ice.  NPR investigations correspondent Howard Berkes has been following this story for years. Berkes, who retired in 2019, continues to report on the issue for NPR, Public Health Watch and Kentucky Public Radio, as well as Frontline PBS. He recently joined Reid Frazier of The Allegheny Front to talk about the latest developments.     Where kratom regulations stand as Pennsylvania's legislative session nears the end

    A bill to regulate kratom and banthe sale of synthetic compounds has passed the Pennsylvania House.  It would allow registered vendors to sell products made from natural kratom leaf in powdered or capsule form to customers under the age of 21. Ian Karbal has been following the legislation's movement, with just a handful of session days remaining.     The slog to ban gifts to state lawmakers in Pennsylvania

    Kratom's regulatory complexities confront Pennsylvania lawmakers

    You might have seen signs advertising kratom at a corner store or out for sale on a gas station counter.  In its natural form, kratom is derived from a tree with the same name native to southeast Asia. There also are synthetic versions out there. But anyone buying it doesn’t really know what they’re getting because we don’t have labeling standards for it.  Kratom acts as a stimulant in small amounts. In larger doses, the effects are more similar to opioids – leading some people to use it while recovering from opioid addiction to help with withdrawal symptoms.   In recent years, its availability has exploded as research on its effects and regulation have lagged. Poison control centers and emergency rooms have documented a rise in cases linked to kratom in the meantime. In Pennsylvania, more than four dozen people have died since 2025 after overdosing on it alone or in combination with other substances.  So, health professionals and lawmakers want to regulate it.
