    What Healthy Marriages Do Differently

What does a healthy marriage actually look like? In this episode of Marriage Sessions, Mike and Holly talk honestly about the work behind a healthy marriage and why the couples we admire often have stories of pruning, conflict, healing, and growth that we never see. A healthy marriage isn't one without struggle. It's two people who are willing to bring things into the light, take ownership, pursue one another, and keep moving toward Jesus together. Because there's no quick fix or perfect formula for marriage. Healthy marriages are built over time through intentionality, humility, hard conversations, and a willingness to keep practicing what we know is true. In this episode, you'll learn how to: • Stop comparing your marriage to the highlight reels you see online • Recognize how each spouse's wounds can trigger one another and learn to take ownership of what God is revealing • Bring struggles into the light through honesty, confession, and vulnerability • Create an environment where you and your spouse can listen, communicate, and feel safe • Invite trusted couples into your marriage for encouragement, accountability, and wise perspective • Practice what you teach by pursuing reconciliation, forgiveness, and repair in everyday moments • Take a humble first step toward a healthier marriage by inviting Jesus into the struggle Mike and Holly also share about the difference between pressure and conviction, the importance of having people who can speak into your marriage, and why healthy couples don't avoid conflict but learn how to move through it well. Because a healthy marriage isn't about having everything figured out. It's about continuing to grow, repair, and pursue one another through every season. 5 Boundaries That Protect Your Marriage

What if boundaries aren't about keeping people out, but about protecting what's precious? In this episode of Marriage Sessions, Mike and Holly share five boundaries that can protect your marriage from the things that slowly compete with it. From outside influences, divided attention, to bitterness, and keeping score, they unpack what it looks like to protect your marriage as a covenant. Marriage isn't a 50/50 contract. It's both people giving 100%. And healthy boundaries can help couples protect what they've committed to, and choose each other through every season. In this episode, you'll learn how to: • Set a boundary around who has access to your marriage and learn the difference between seeking godly wisdom and seeking validation • Protect your attention and give your spouse your presence, not just your proximity • Discern outside influences and receive advice without handing others the steering wheel to your marriage  • Stop keeping score and embrace a covenant mindset instead of treating marriage like a transaction Mike and Holly also share practical ways to set boundaries around phones, work, extended family, and other competing priorities. Because boundaries aren't meant to create distance. They're meant to protect the love, trust, connection, and covenant inside your marriage.  If you need resources and tools to help you in the current season of marriage you're in, take this marriage quiz! https://sparkdiscipleship.com/personalize/?utm_source=social&utm_medium=organic_social

Sex, Shame, and God's Design for Marriage

What does God actually say about sex, intimacy, and marriage? In this episode of Marriage Sessions, Mike and Holly have an honest conversation about sex in marriage, why the church needs to talk about it without shame, and how God designed sexual intimacy as a good gift within the covenant of marriage. For many couples, sex can come with fear, shame, past trauma, confusing messages, or unspoken expectations. Mike and Holly share openly from their own journey and offer biblical wisdom for understanding intimacy as more than a physical act. It is about trust, vulnerability, connection, and being fully known by your spouse. In this episode, you'll learn how to: • Understand God's original design and purpose for sex within marriage • Recognize how shame, past experiences, and cultural messages can affect intimacy • See sexual intimacy as emotional, physical, and spiritual connection • Communicate openly with your spouse about sex, intimacy, and emotional connection • Identify unhealthy ways sex can become a tool for manipulation or control • Start meaningful conversations about the messages and beliefs you grew up with • Seek wise, biblical support when healing and deeper conversations are needed Sex is a powerful gift, and God's boundaries are not meant to diminish intimacy but to protect and cultivate it. Whether you're married, engaged, dating, or trying to understand what biblical intimacy looks like, this episode offers an honest conversation about sex, healing, communication, and God's good design for marriage. When Past Pain Shows Up in Your Marriage (It Happened to Us This Week)

This past week, Holly had a hard moment, and we're being vulnerable and sharing what actually happened, how we worked through it, and what we're continuing to learn about loving each other well when past pain shows up in the present. In this episode, we talk about what to do when you're the one being triggered, how to recognize when your reaction may be connected to something deeper, and why taking ownership of your response matters, even when the emotions you're experiencing are very real. We also talk about the other side: how to support a spouse who has been triggered without becoming defensive, trying to force a conversation, or feeling responsible for fixing their pain. In this episode we talk about: • How past trauma can show up in present-day marriage • What to do when you realize you've been triggered • Why naming what you're experiencing matters • How to get curious instead of defensive with your spouse • Creating safety when your spouse isn't ready to talk • Why your spouse can support your healing without becoming your healer • When it may be time to seek additional support • How difficult moments can become opportunities for deeper connection and growth Our hope is that this conversation reminds you that a healthy marriage isn't a perfect marriage. You can learn to recognize unhealthy patterns, take ownership of what's yours, and love one another well even when old wounds surface. Curious what season your marriage is in? Dating Isn't Just for Getting Married, It's How You Stay Married

Dating shouldn't end once you get married. In fact, dating your spouse may be one of the most important practices for building a strong, lasting marriage. Many marriages slowly drift as they become focused on managing schedules, raising children, paying bills, and keeping the household running. Before long, spouses can begin functioning more like teammates than best friends. In this episode, of Marriage Sessions we share why intentionally dating your spouse helps you to create a deeper connection, protect the friendship at the foundation of your marriage, build emotional intimacy and strengthen physical intimacy, and so much more! We also discuss practical date-night ideas for busy couples. Sometimes rebuilding connection starts with something as simple as taking a walk, putting away your phones, remembering a favorite memory, or asking your spouse what they are currently fearing, grieving, or dreaming about. You don't need an elaborate date or a perfect season of life to reconnect. You simply need intentional time to keep learning your spouse, protecting your friendship, and pursuing one another's hearts. Whether you're newly married, raising children, or working to reconnect after years together, we hope this conversation encourages you to make dating your spouse a consistent part of your marriage. OUR LOVE STORY | High School Sweethearts, Long Distance & Marriage

Our love story started at a church youth summer camp in 2002 and the road from high school sweethearts to marriage was an important journey for us. From Mike taking three days to realize Holly had an identical twin, to our first date at McDonald's, protective parents, a breakup in small group, to Holly dating Mike's best friend, and then finding our way back to each other, long-distance dating, and eventually getting married at 20 and 21… there's a lot to this story. More than 20 years later, we've officially spent more of our lives together than apart. Looking back, we can see how much God used those early years to grow us individually and ultimately redeem and restore our relationship. In this episode, we're sharing our full story: how we met, why we broke up, how we got back together, what it was like getting married young, and what we've learned about Christian dating, relationships, and marriage along the way. One of the biggest lessons we've learned? It's not just about finding the right person, it's about becoming the right person. Whether you're dating, engaged, newly married, or decades into marriage, we hope our story encourages you to trust God with yours. Subscribe to Marriage Sessions with Mike & Holly for honest conversations about Christian marriage, dating, relationships, intimacy, conflict, faith, and building a marriage that lasts.  Curious what season your marriage is in?
