When Someone Offers to Help, Say Yes

Val Yoder was 41 when she went in for her very first mammogram. By March she had a stage 4 breast cancer diagnosis, and she kept doing her morning radio show through 12 weeks of chemo. In this special episode of The O&G Spot, Jennifer takes her mic to the Breast Cancer Survivors of Oklahoma event during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. She talks with the survivors and the people who show up for them, including organization president Kelly, who came from the oil and gas industry. Janelle was first diagnosed at 26 and has now beaten breast cancer twice. Krista Klein-Behr of Our Blood Institute talks about the caregivers nobody checks on, and Jennifer shares why blood donation matters to her after losing her sister to leukemia. Project Buber volunteers drive women to treatment and wait the whole time. One of them shares that her cancer was found on an MRI, not a mammogram, and her advice is simple: listen to your body.   In this episode: Why Val kept working through 12 weeks of chemo The advice Val got early on: when people offer help, say yes Janelle on beating breast cancer twice, then facing leukemia Diana Hill on swapping a frozen cold cap every 25 minutes The day Krista saw her dad cry for the first time How Project Buber gets women to chemo when no one else can And Chandler’s first try at interviewing Jennifer   Let’s Get It On Jennifer McGee Breast Cancer Survivors of Oklahoma  The O&G Spot Instagram Facebook   Be sure to subscribe!    If you or anyone you know would like to be a guest, please email jen@theoandgspot.com  The O&G Spot is presented by Jennifer McGee and produced by FORME Marketing.  Copyright 2026 © The O&G Spot

The Expiration Date Nobody Talks About

Sunny Leigh was 40 the first time a boss told her he could find someone younger and prettier who would do her job for less money. She was 53 when she was let go from morning television. In between, she spent almost 15 years in radio at KVOO and five years on the morning show at KTUL in Tulsa. None of it was the plan. Sunny has a biology degree, worked with dolphins at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium and taught middle school science before her mom talked her into trying radio. Jennifer and Sunny talk about the point in a career where how young you look starts to count for more than what you know. Sunny describes the comments about her appearance that started on her very first day on air. Jennifer calls out what she has seen in sales, where years of experience and long-standing client trust get passed over in favor of appearance. Sunny also gives her account of losing two TV jobs and the age discrimination lawsuits she has filed since. Jennifer opens up about a story she says almost nobody knows: her dad was let go after nearly 40 years at McDonnell Douglas, and he took the company to court. They’re both honest about why so many people stay quiet when an industry feels small and speaking up can get you labeled the problem. They close on the practical side, starting with the financial advisor who told Sunny to save 12% of every paycheck no matter what. Then Sunny talks about what she’s doing now, from positive stories for MCWX to caring for injured and orphaned wildlife at Wild Heart Ranch. If you’ve been in your industry long enough to be the most experienced person in the room, this one is worth your time.   In this episode: How a biology degree and a job rescuing dolphins led Sunny into radio The program director who said he could replace her for less money, and how Sunny called his bluff The comments about Sunny’s appearance that started on her first day on TV What Jennifer has seen happen to experienced salespeople in oil and gas Sunny’s account of being let go from two Tulsa TV stations and the lawsuits that followed Jennifer’s dad and the age discrimination case he filed after nearly 40 years on the job Why people stay quiet when they’re afraid of being labeled a troublemaker The savings habit that had Sunny prepared when her job disappeared And Cowboy, the alpaca with a prosthetic leg    **Since filming, Michelle Linn has left TV news, and Sunny Leigh has started a new role. One Phone Call Changed Everything

Show notes: Most people know Jason Glass as “The Hoverboard Guy” from his online presence, but there’s a lot more to his story than that.   In this episode of The O&G Spot, Jennifer sits down with Jason to talk about his life story. They cover his move from California to Texas, his career transition into the pipeline industry, and how his personal struggles led him to be a light for so many viewers online.   They also get into starting over completely: showing up to industry events with a $200 a month stipend, volunteering his way into associations, and why he thinks you have to touch somebody five times before they become your friend. And of course, they cover the haters, the wipeouts, and the second phone he had to buy just for TikTok after getting banned six times. In this episode: The story behind "Jason the Hoverboard Guy" How COVID and TikTok unexpectedly changed Jason's life Lessons learned from addiction, recovery, and personal setbacks How a call from his son became a life-changing wake-up moment Why health became Jason's foundation for success The reality of dealing with criticism on social media Tips for networking and creating opportunities in the energy industry The mindset that keeps him focused on the present rather than the past or future     Let’s Get It On: Jennifer McGee Jason - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jasontglass/ The O&G Spot Instagram Facebook   Be sure to subscribe!   If you or anyone you know would like to be a guest, please email jen@theoandgspot.com The O&G Spot is presented by Jennifer McGee and produced by FORME Marketing. The Other Side of the Mic

This time, Jennifer McGee is on the other side of the mic. Her niece, Annika Lochhead, joins her in the studio and gets a chance to turn the tables a little. They talk about what Jennifer was really like as Aunt Jen, growing up in their family, old memories, her path into oil and gas, and a few stories that probably weren’t supposed to make it onto the podcast. The conversation also gets personal as Jennifer and Annika talk about Debbie, Jennifer’s sister and Annika’s mom, and what losing her has taught them about time. Jennifer opens up about the things she wishes she had slowed down for; the ordinary moments she didn’t realize she would miss, and why she looks at time with the people she loves differently now.  Of course, they can’t stay serious for too long. There’s also a story about being left at Pizza Hut, another involving a cab, and a discovery about Grandma’s pumpkin pie that Annika clearly has not gotten over. If you’ve listened to Jennifer interview everyone else, this episode is your chance to get to know her a little better. In this episode: What Jennifer was really like as Aunt Jen The family experiences that shaped Jennifer and Annika Losing a sister, losing a mom and remembering the little things Jennifer's unconventional path from teaching to oil and gas What Jennifer wishes she had made more time for earlier in life Why some of life's most ordinary moments end up mattering the most And the truth about Grandma's pumpkin pie   Let’s Get It On: Jennifer McGee Annika The O&G Spot Instagram Facebook     Be sure to subscribe!   If you or anyone you know would like to be a guest, please email jen@theoandgspot.com The O&G Spot is presented by Jennifer McGee and produced by FORME Marketing. Just Be Yourself is Terrible Career Advice

"Just be yourself" isn't bad advice. It's incomplete advice.  In this episode of The O&G Spot, Jennifer McGee sits down with Julie Flowers, founder of Elevate You Coaching and co-host of the podcast Savvy Sisters and Cocktail Conversations, to talk about the difference between being authentic and being unfiltered. Julie spent three decades in corporate HR. She's coached hundreds of women through the same wall: doing everything right and still not being heard, respected, or promoted the way they should be. Jennifer and Julie get into the stuff that doesn't make it into a LinkedIn post: being told to dial down your presence when you move overseas, the tattoo and nose ring you skipped for years because "professional," and why "male-populated" hits different than "male-dominated." In this episode: Why "just be yourself" leaves out the most important part The real line between authenticity and being unfiltered How delivery and communication style shape who actually gets heard in the room Reading a room, including what seating and body language really tell you Reframing the career "gap" for women who step away to raise a family Meeting Penny Perfect, Julie's name for her own inner critic, and how she quiets her down Why four-inch heels were part of Julie's confidence strategy for 30 years   Let’s Get It On: Jennifer McGee Julie Flowers The O&G Spot Instagram Facebook     Be sure to subscribe!   If you or anyone you know would like to be a guest, please email jen@theoandgspot.com The O&G Spot is presented by Jennifer McGee and produced by FORME Marketing.
