A Vegan Utopia? Animal Rights Themes in Pluribus

Adam, Hayden, Lottie and Nick discuss whether the show Pluribus (Apple TV) promotes a pro-animal rights message, including highlighting the “straw man” arguments against veganism in the show and in fan reactions to it. We also cover what we’d each do in the Pluribus scenario, not necessarily advocating for cannibalism, and the Pluribus as an analogy for communism while the main character Carol represents capitalism/rugged individualism.  Radiothon: Thanks again to everyone who has donated to our Radiothon campaign! With donations for our show via Givenow and the 3CR site combined, we have now reached over 90% of our $1,700 target. If you’d like to help keep our show and 3CR going, you can get us over the line here: https://www.givenow.com.au/cr/FreedomofSpecies We appreciate any support!  More Pluribus Analysis: Prestige TV Podcast – ‘Pluribus’ Episode 3: Negative Nancy at the Ice Hotel: https://www.theringer.com/podcasts/the-prestige-tv-podcast/2025/11/14/pluribus-episode-3-negative-nancy-at-the-ice-hotel The Rich Eisen Show – Vince Gilligan on the Underlying A.I. Animal liberation: Shared goal, diverse tactics

In this episode Lottie and Nick talked about diversity of tactics, innovation of tactics and radical flank effects in social movements, and what animal (or any other!) activists can learn from these phenomena. We argue for unity in fighting for our common goal of ANIMAL LIBERATION. But we discuss how diverse tactics, both radical and moderate, can be positive for social movements.  Resources we drew from: "Rebels With a Cause: Public Attitudes on Radical Protest Actions A Review of Empirical Evidence of Radical Flank Effects" by Chamberlain & Madsen (2025): https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s42087-025-00485-y#ref-CR18 "Waves of Contention: Relations among Radical, Moderate, and Conservative Movement Organizations" by Robnett, Glasser and Trammell (2015): https://www.emerald.com/books/edited-volume/12925/chapter-abstract/83298261/Waves-of-Contention-Relations-among-Radical "Choosing Tactics: Evidence from Social Movement Theory" by Max Carpendalehttps://www.animalask.org/post/choosing-tactics-evidence-from-social-movement-theory  This episode covers similar themes to our May 31st 2026 episode, "Vegan stereotypes: In defence of the preachy vegan!" https://www.3cr.org.au/freedomofspecies/episode/vegan-stereotypes-defence-preachy-vegan  Music:  Strange Fruit - Billie Holiday  A Change is Gonna Come - Sam Cooke  Mississippi Goddam - Nina Simone Donate before the end of July to keep Freedom of Species and 3CR on the air. Vegan stereotypes: In defence of the preachy vegan!

Soy boys, militants, social justice warriors, hypocrites, bleeding hearts, hippies... stereotypes abound when people talk about vegans!  In today's show, Lottie, Nick and Hayden tackle these vegan stereotypes. We talk about what truth some of these stereotypes have and what they get wrong.  In terms of how this can influence our animal justice activism, we discuss a model of attitude change from social psychology (the Elaboration Likelihood Model) which can explain why these stereotypes might influence people's views of vegans. We also discuss two concepts stemming from the USA civil rights movement: diversity of tactics and the positive radical flank effect.  A takeaway is that pick-me and preachy vegans alike can work together towards our common cause of animal liberation!  Listen to other podcasts that inspired this topic: - Freedom of Species: Is Veganism a Cult? https://www.3cr.org.au/freedomofspecies/episode/veganism-cult - Sounds Like a Cult: The Cult of Veganism https://www.iheart.com/podcast/1319-sounds-like-a-cult-82627527/episode/the-cult-of-veganism-94176135/  Explainers: Elaboration Likelihood Model: https://www.simplypsychology.org/elaboration-likelihood-model.html Diversity of tactics: https://everything.explained.today/Diversity_of_tactics/#Ref-5 Radical flank effect: https://everything.explained.today/%5C/Radical_flank_effect/  A scholarly review article showing evidence of positive radical flank effects across movements: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s42087-025-00485-y#ref-CR18  Music: Animal Liberation by Los Fastidios: https://www.losfastidios.net/ Can't Win by PUP. Baby Rats by MU330. Soy Boy by Djupa Dvala.

Talking animal testing with Dr Dana Kolsky from Animal-Free Science Advocacy (AFSA)

We welcome Dr Dana Kolsky from Animal-Free Science Advocacy (AFSA) to discuss animal testing, including the recently released documentary film How to Make Drugs and Feel Great about Everything.Dana's bio:Dana is a dedicated veterinary surgeon whose career is driven by a deep commitment to animal welfare. Since 2018, she has cared for small animals with compassion and integrity, guiding countless families through challenging and complex medical decisions. Before entering the veterinary field, Dana earned degrees in Communications and Film and Television and built a career in media and marketing.A lifelong advocate for animal rights, she has volunteered with many animal welfare organisations, turning her passion into action. Deeply concerned by the suffering caused through animal experimentation, Dana now channels her skills and voice into her work with Animal-Free Science Advocacy — working to end animal testing and help animals not just one by one, but on a much larger scale. How to Make Drugs and Feel Great about Everything is a new feature documentary from Keegan Kuhn, co-producer/co-director of Cowspiracy and What the Health, with director Journey Zephyr, that investigates the process of drug development in the US, uncovering the wasteful, dangerous and absurd use of animal testing in the 21st century.     Links:Follow Animal-Free Science Advocacy https://animalfreescienceadvocacy.org.au/ and view the quality resources available; from the history of the anti-vivisection movement, right through to case studies, sector news and the AFSA podcast https://animalfreescienceadvocacy.org.au/resources/podcast/  Support AFSA’s campaign to end primate experiments https://animalfreescienceadvocacy.org.au/ending-primate-experiments/ In the What You Can Do section: there is a link to a letter that can be sent to the government, calling to stop the funding of primate experiment, and a unique donation opportunity that allows supporters to name a primate https://animalfreescienceadvocacy.org.au/honour-me-with-a-name/ Take action and ask your MP to support AFSA’s Federal Budget submission to see better funding of non-animal experiments. https://animalfreescienceadvocacy.org.au/fund-the-future/ Global news update from April 9, 2026: From promises to implementation: the latest global moves advancing animal-free research https://animalfreescienceadvocacy.org.au/from-promises-to-implementation  Ever wondered where animal experiments are happening in Australia? The main uses are: as models of human development and disease; in toxicity testing as subjects for measuring harmful effects of chemicals, and in aquaculture research to expand the farming of fish for food. We asked me about local breeders of animals for research. The main suppliers are Ozgene and Australian Bio Resources. The research institutions themselves breed their own animals.        Previous AFSA interviews:Freedom of Species interview with Rachel Smith, CEO of AFSA, November 2024 https://www.3cr.org.au/freedomofspecies/episode/animal-free-science-advocacy-interview-rachel Freedom of Species interview with Robyn Kirby, Primate Campaign Consultant, April 2025 https://www.3cr.org.au/freedomofspecies/episode/animal-free-science-advocacy-primate-experimentation-interview-robyn Music we played on the show:Beautiful Boy by John LennonFly Away by Lenny KravtizI want to break free by Queen      Please note that unfortunately due to copyright restrictions, we are unable to include the songs in the podcast.       Please contact the FoS team with any feedback at FoSradio@proton.me
