It consists of different horror creature characters originating from various novels, such as Dr. Jekyll / Mr. Hyde, the Phantom of the Opera, Count Dracula, Frankenstein's monster, the Mummy, and the Invisible Man, as well as original characters the Wolf Man and the Creature from the Black Lagoon. The original series began with Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1913) and ended with The Creature Walks Among Us (1956). While the early installments were initially created as stand-alone films based on published novels, their financial and critical success resulted in various cross-over releases between the monsters, as well as other properties such as Abbott and Costello. Following the positive response to various viewings of these films via television redistribution which began airing in the 1950s, the studio began developing the characters for other media. In the 1990s, it became priority for Universal to promote their catalogue with official packaging that presented films with the official franchise title. Through a number of VHS editions, their popularity continued into contemporary entertainment. This included additional development through modern-filmmaking adaptations, beginning with Dracula (1979) and most recently Wolf Man (2025). Modern analyses describe the titular characters as "pop culture icons",while the franchise as a whole is often cited as the prototypical example of the shared universe concept in film. In addition to the films, the franchise has expanded to include novels, comics, and theme park rides.

The film stars Frank Langella in the title role as well as Laurence Olivier, Donald Pleasence and Kate Nelligan. The film is based on Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula and its 1924 stage adaptation, though much of Stoker's original plot was revised to make the film more romantic, as advertised by the tagline "A Love Story". The film received mostly positive reviews and was a moderate box office success. It won the 1979 Saturn Award for Best Horror Film. The Mummy is a 1959 British horror film, directed by Terence Fisher and starring Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. It was written by Jimmy Sangster and produced by Michael Carreras and Anthony Nelson Keys for Hammer Film Productions. The film was distributed in the UK on 25 September 1959, and in the U.S. in December, 1959 on a double bill with either the Vincent Price film The Bat or the Universal film Curse of the Undead. Though the title suggests Universal Pictures' 1932 film of the same name, the film actually derives its plot and characters entirely from two 1940s Universal films, The Mummy's Hand and The Mummy's Tomb, with the climax borrowed directly from The Mummy's Ghost. The character name Joseph Whemple, the use of a sacred scroll, and a few minor plot elements are the only connections with the 1932 version. Abbott and Costello Meet the Killer, Boris Karloff is a 1949 horror comedy film directed by Charles Barton and starring Abbott and Costello and Boris Karloff. In 1956, the film was re-released by Realart Pictures as a double feature with Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein. The film is set in a hotel. Following the murder of a prominent lawyer within the hotel, the hotel's bellboy is kept in custody at his room. The other suspects in the murder case manipulate him into signing a false confession, and then try to eliminate him. Meanwhile, the corpses of two more victims are found hidden in the bellboy's closet.
