Chaotic Kids on Charter Boats: Captains Share Their Wildest Stories Ep. 14

Welcome back to The Captain's Report 🎣, the show featuring real charter fishing captains out of Murrells Inlet & Myrtle Beach, SC. This episode, the crew (plus a full house of guests) shares their favorite chaotic kid stories: teenagers who "forgot" to mention they were deaf, a toddler taking his first steps on the boat, a kid climbing the T-top of a moving vessel, a college rugby player cannonballing into a marsh creek to retrieve a rod, and the flounder release that ended in tears. It's proof that some of the best charter stories don't come from the fish — they come from the kids. If you love fishing charters, boat life, and the unfiltered side of the charter fishing industry, you're in the right place. New episodes are filmed live from the MIFC Shack on the Marsh Walk in Murrells Inlet, real captains, real stories, nothing scripted. 🎬 WHAT'S IN THIS EPISODE The teenage group that never mentioned they were all deaf A toddler's first steps happening mid-charter The kid who climbed to the top of the boat while no one was looking A grown "kid" (college rugby player) diving into a marsh creek for a lost rod Little Johnny's heartbreaking flounder release Captains' go-to tricks for keeping kids calm and busy on the water ⏱ TIMESTAMPS 0:00 – Cold Open: Chaos on the Water 0:21 – Welcome to The Captain's Report 1:07 – Today's Topic: Chaotic Kids 1:56 – The Teenagers Who Were All Deaf 5:46 – Little Johnny Climbs the T-Top 8:00 – Six Kids, One Mom Who Left to Go Shopping 9:18 – Captain Jack, the Human Pinball 10:53 – The Squid-Covered Kid on an 8-Hour Trip 12:41 – The Rugby Player Who Dove In for a Rod 16:41 – Kids in the Livewell: A Personal Jacuzzi 19:50 – Little Johnny's Big Flounder... and the Release Nobody Wanted 23:43 – Captains' Tricks for Managing Kids on the Boat 26:23 – Final Thoughts: We Were All Chaotic Kids Once 26:48 – Subscribe & Book Your Charter 📍 FEATURED CAPTAINS & CREW Capt. What Wicked Tuna Doesn’t Show You: Charter Captains Expose the Truth Ep. 12

Wicked Tuna shows $28 a pound. The guys on this bus say try $10... if you're lucky. And that's before you factor in the 70 other boats out there trying to run your lines over, the federal officer inspecting your permits at the dock, and the Japanese auction buyer grading your core sample while you wait to find out what you made that week. 🎣 This week the Captain's Report crew goes deep on what the TV cameras never show you about bluefin tuna fishing. Capt. Kyle breaks down the full "Helmet Boy" story, a 680lb bluefin, a client who couldn't fight, six hours and twenty minutes, and a fish they had to sell for a fraction of what the show told the world it would fetch. Jay Baker, Murrells Inlet's legendary shrimper, shares what the commercial side actually looked like before the TV cameras showed up. Drew Pamplin, who's filmed bluefin catches for OIFC's TV show, explains what it's like to chase a seasick feeling through a lens in 30-degree weather while a Volkswagen-sized fish launches itself out of the water. And Robert and Jack share their own bluefin moments, six bites all broken off on 90lb fluoro, and a fog-covered 2:30am departure out of Morehead City with five boats sneaking out behind them. Real captains. Nothing scripted. Every story is 100% true. 🎬 WHAT'S IN THIS EPISODE - Why the prices on Wicked Tuna are almost never what you actually get at the dock - The full "Helmet Boy" story: a 680lb bluefin, a client who couldn't fight, and six hours on the rod - What actually happens at the dock: federal officers, core samples, and a Japanese auction you don't control - 70 boats competing in the same water that TV never shows - Capt. Captains Trying to Out Run Storms to a Murder Scene at the Dock Ep. 11

What do you do when a storm splits in two and comes at you from both directions at once? Or when you pull up to your own dock and it looks like a crime scene? This week the crew of The Captain's Report swaps their wildest storm survival stories and dock disasters and these are 100% true. ⛈️ We're talking a king mackerel tournament run that turned into a lightning storm so intense the hair stood up on everyone's arms, a rental skiff pinned against the jetty rocks in a downpour, a boat getting struck by lightning and towed in with a literally roasted mud minnow still on the rod, a young captain running on one engine 23 miles from home with nothing but an old Nokia phone, a captain hiding out from a storm on a stranger's porch drinking sweet tea (and never telling the marina), a boat that drifted away still tied to an entire missing section of dock, and a dock covered in blood that turned out to be a much dumber story than anyone expected. He Fished Against Future Bassmaster Elites in College & Didn’t Know It Ep. 10

He grew up pond hopping around Charlotte, talked Liberty University into considering a college fishing team (they said no), transferred to UNC Charlotte to join their bass club and unknowingly spent two years grinding against guys who are now Bassmaster Elite anglers. Then one summer in Garden City changed everything. 🎣 This week Capt. Robert and the crew sit down with Capt. Caleb Hartley of Carolina Hook & Fly to trace the full journey: from freshwater bass tournaments to saltwater inshore slams, from standing at Marlin Cay cleaning jetty fish to running his own guide service. Along the way they get into the worst charter Caleb's ever had (a dad, five kids, a case of Bud Diesel, and a handshake refusal), the best tip he's ever received (a quarter deer in a trash bag and 350lbs of lead and the guy bought the boat), plus real flounder fishing tips straight from one of the inlet's most dedicated inshore captains. What do you do when you get a 4:30am call that your boat is underwater, the night before a tournament? This week the crew of The Captain's Report is talking sunk boats, near-sunk boats, and the moments that made grown captains genuinely question if they were about to swim for it. 🌊 We're talking a tournament boat that sank overnight at the dock over a manufacturing defect nobody caught, an offshore rescue where nobody could find the right one of seven batteries to save a sinking 42 Freeman, a bait run gone wrong that filled a 26 Pathfinder waist-deep in the middle of an inlet, a livewell drain disaster that nearly swamped a brand-new charter captain's boat, and the time an owner told his captain to "pull the plug" on a boat full of water and it actually worked. He Won a King Mackerel Tournament With His Pants Around His Ankles Ep. 8

Two kids get shunned from Garden City Pier for out-fishing the old-timers. Twenty years later, one of them wins a King Mackerel tournament with his pants around his ankles and earns a nickname that follows him for the next decade. 🎣 This week the Captain's Report bus is packed with pier fishing legends, tournament veterans, and Capt. Robbie of the Long Run Fishing Team and they take it all the way back. Back to Jackson rigs tied to pier railings, all-night whiting sessions with no limits, a one-rod workaround they invented at age 9 to get around pier rules, and a brag board that took down their pictures because management didn't want kids showing up the old salts. Then the tournament stories start: an 18-year-old who beat 1,028 boats in the Arthur Smith King Mackerel Tournament, took the prize money, sold the mobile home, and grabbed a porcelain cat as his trophy. A head boat entered in a King tournament, competing against 12-foot center consoles.
