Is MAGA Dead in Oklahoma? Plus, Westbrook’s Immortality, Brent Venables’ Future, and State Farm’s New Admission in Court

As election night unfolded, something felt different. There was actual uncertainty, a feeling absent from Oklahoma politics since the early 2000s. Real drama played out across not just the governor’s race, but also two(!) congressional races. And for moments, as Ryan watched Oklahoma’s Own Amanda Taylor and Karl Torp, he thought the anchor pair didn’t quite know what to do with all this anticipation and deliberation. The energy was so palpable, the moment so vital, that it seemed more in keeping with the unhinged exuberance of David Payne and Val Castor. Ultimately, when the drama was over, the scoreboard looked the same: our governor and all seven congressman are Republicans. But the feeling that’s haunted the Oklahoma electorate for nearly twenty years, a feeling of absolute certainty that whoever the Republicans put on the ballot would win, was dashed. The Republicans, for the first time in a long time, seemed vulnerable. Ryan breaks down what that loss of invincibility means moving forward in Oklahoma politics, while reviewing how Mike Mazzei pulled off the win against Cyndi Munson and highlighting where Cyndi Munson made historic gains as a Democratic candidate. Bice survived. Stein did not. Every state question ran into buzzsaw. Ryan reviews it all. The Oklahoma News Roundup features Russell Westbrook’s immortality, Brent Venables’ future, and State Farm’s new admission in court. OKC Gets Its First Data Center, Plus Jason Momoa’s the Coolest Human Alive, Noah Kahan Bombs OU Finals Week, and Paycom’s Allergy to Employee Health

Last week, in our editorial team meeting, Ryan pitched the group an idea: “So, I want to do a fictitious interview at Power House with a sentient data center who happens to be the first whistleblower in the data center industry. A little bit of noir, a little bit of Spotlight, a little bit of No Country for Old Men.” We told him it was the dumbest idea we’ve ever heard. He told us he had no other ideas. We greenlit him to pursue his passion project, again. The first ever interview conducted in a southwestern bar with a fictitious, whistleblowing data center published this morning. We were pleasantly surprised with how it turned out. More reasonably, Ryan hosts a podcast discussion here about the state of AI and data centers in Oklahoma. He also breaks down this week’s news of the mega data center coming to western Oklahoma City, along with power, water, noise, and pollution concerns. It’s informative, we’ll give him that. In the Oklahoma News Roundup, Ryan shares some intel he received about the Alyssa Walker-Donaldson case in McCurtain County, some thoughts on the tragedy that happened Sunday night inside Paycom Center, his excitement about Noah Kahan coming to Norman, and how Jason Momoa might be the coolest person alive. Is “Kill. Bury. Print.” the Best Oklahoma Documentary Ever? Plus Munson’s Momentum and Blake Griffin’s Late Night Debut

A couple of weeks ago, Kill. Bury. Print. dropped on Peacock and no one in the office noticed, nor was there a mention in The Oklahoman. But, in the comments section of TikTok, where Ryan was trying to understand why Donald Trump chose to stump in southeastern Oklahoma, the people were imploring him to watch Kill. Bury. Print. “It explains everything,” they said. And explain everything it did. Kill. Bury. Print. tells the story of how the McCurtain Gazette held its elected officials accountable for death threats, bigotry, racism, and good ol’ fashioned nepotism and corruption. To do that, it took bravery in spades from the Willingham family, the owners of the county’s only newspaper. Ryan shares his five takeaways from the film and also asks, “Is this the best documentary about Oklahoma since… ever?” In the Oklahoma News Round Up, Ryan tries to make sense of this week’s non-stop reporting about Cyndi Munson’s momentum in the gubernatorial race, the split between James Lankford and Alan Armstrong over Russian diesel, and Blake Griffin’s late night debut (which we believe was quite strong). Ranking OKC’s Coffee Shops, Plus Ella Langley Versus Tulsa PD and OKC’s Olympic Glow-Up

Ryan told us this week that the whole reason he started The Dry Line was to discuss Oklahoma City’s coffee shops. We didn’t blink. This was no surprise around the office. Because the guy never stops talking about coffee. Often, he says things like, “If you look back at 2015 closely, you could see those first seeds of this coffee renaissance starting to sprout.” And, in turn, we think, Who cares man? The rest of us hate coffee. We drink Celsius. Nonetheless, we green-lit his extraordinarily caffeinated passion project this week. The result? A 3000-word analysis on OKC's coffee scene and this 50-minute podcast about OKC's coffee scene. Was this a wise editorial use of our resources? We’ll let you be the judge. Who know who loved every second of working on this? Ryan. In a loaded Oklahoma News Roundup, he also discusses the documentary Kill. Bury. Print., Ella Langley’s Tulsa concert cancellation, the second rejection for Ben Gamla’s Jewish charter school, and OKC’s plans for an expansive glow-up ahead of the 2028 Olympic games. Why is Trump Really Coming to Oklahoma?

On Saturday night, Ryan’s phone pinged. A text from a family member with a link. Feeling reckless, he clicked the link. It was a page that said Donald Trump was coming to Oklahoma, to Durant of all places, for a “midterm rally”. The website looked like it had been constructed on Squarespace with the first, basic template. It looked like a scam. Ryan Googled “Trump Oklahoma”. Not a scam, a legitimate event. A for real event. Which begged the question: Why? Ryan dug around and came up with a theory, one which has Oklahoma actually beating Texas. In this situation. Not on the football field, of course. In the Oklahoma News Round-Up, Ryan breaks down Buc-ee’s and OKC making things official, Markwayne Mullin’s shouting match with a former Edmond mayor, and Stephanie Bice’s hot mic up at an event in Stillwater, along with the most important development in his life since the birth of his son, the pothole getting fixed on Kelly at the railroad tracks before I-235. Nick Coffey’s Fight to Hold Oklahoma Accountable

Change is afoot. The signs are everywhere across Oklahoma City. On street corners. In front yards and gardens. Almost ubiquitous at this point, they’re colored yellow and black. And we’re not talking about the monarchs’ ongoing migration across Oklahoma (which is super cool and should be highlighted more often). No, we’re talking about the campaign signs for attorney general candidate Nick Coffey. Because those signs are everywhere. Part of this groundswell of support is attributed to Nick’s roots, with him growing up in OKC and being a proud law graduate of The University of Oklahoma. But we believe it has more to do with Nick’s campaign messaging. He’s a Democrat on the ballot, but he’s said publicly that the Office of the Attorney General should not be a partisan office. He says it should be a law enforcement office acting on behalf of public interest, and partisan politics should have no role. That simple promise—almost idealistic in today’s political environment—is resonating with voters who want their leaders to start focusing on real issues impacting Oklahomans. Graciously, given his schedule ahead of November’s election, Nick joined Ryan to discuss the issues that voters care about—data center development, cannabis legislation, and the Inola smelter project—along with how OU offense can right the ship against New Mexico on Saturday. After their conversation, Ryan rounds up the Oklahoma news from this week, which involved an upcoming jury trial against Turn Key Health Clinics, the Oklahoma Prison inmates doing telemarketing, and the Harkins Theatre and A24 breakup.
