    Monmouth Tornado - Illinois (1903)

Long before tornado warnings existed, a funnel cloud appeared on the western horizon of Monmouth, Illinois, at 4:30 PM on April 2, 1903. Residents near the edge of town had heard a low, steady roar for twenty minutes. At 4:32 PM the tornado touched down outside the city limits, striking the Wilson family farmhouse first. This episode reconstructs twelve minutes that changed a town of nine thousand people, in which eighty-nine died, hundreds were injured, and courthouse roof beams were carried three blocks. Drawing on the survey of investigator Garriott, who walked the entire damage path and interviewed witnesses, the documentary traces a track about twelve miles long and at least half a mile wide, ending near the village of Little York. Modern analysis places the storm at F4 intensity, with winds between 207 and 260 miles per hour, and some evidence, including a brick church completely removed and soil scoured to bare clay, suggests it may have reached F5 in the hardest-hit areas.

    Belvidere Tornado - Illinois (2023)

When the roof of the Apollo Theatre collapsed onto a concert crowd in Belvidere, Illinois, on the night of March 31, 2023, one person was killed and dozens were injured. This episode reconstructs how a tornado rated EF1, with maximum winds estimated at 110 miles per hour, brought down a century-old vaudeville house on the town square. The documentary follows the storm from its touchdown in a field west of the city limits, through the residential neighborhoods on Belvidere's western edge, to the moment the theater's roof trusses shifted off their supports. It places the event within the larger severe weather outbreak of that Friday night, which produced deadly tornadoes in other states, and examines the aftermath: the lawsuits that followed, the questions about venue safety during public gatherings, and why a well-forecast outbreak can still intersect with a crowded building in ways that leave no good outcome.

    Fairdale Tornado - Illinois (2015)

This episode returns to April 9, 2015, from a different vantage point: the unincorporated village of Fairdale, Illinois, named directly in the tornado warning issued at 7:21 PM for northeastern DeKalb County. The lead time was about eighteen minutes, considered reasonable for a storm of this type, yet two people were killed and twenty-two others injured. The reconstruction examines that gap between warning and outcome. The tornado, rated EF4 with estimated winds between 170 and 190 miles per hour, was narrow but intense, and it passed through the southern edge of a village that had never expected to be struck. The documentary traces how the alert traveled through the cell network, where a single point of failure left residents without notice, and follows the volunteer response that poured into a rural community with no formal disaster plan. It is a study of how a warning can succeed technically and still fail the people it is meant to reach.

    Naplate Tornado - Illinois (2004)

Naplate, Illinois, was a village of roughly five hundred people beside the Illinois River when a tornado struck on the evening of April 20, 2004. A warning for LaSalle County had gone out at 7:08 PM; a trained spotter confirmed the funnel on the ground at 7:23 PM, two miles southwest of the village. This episode reconstructs the storm's northeast run at forty-five miles per hour, including its crossing of the quarter-mile-wide river without weakening, and the roughly ten minutes residents had to act. Surveyors rated the tornado an F3 on the Fujita scale, corresponding to winds between 158 and 206 miles per hour; later reanalysis under the Enhanced scale placed the winds near 165 miles per hour. The documentary follows the rescue effort, with the injured transported to hospitals in Ottawa and LaSalle, and considers why the village's mobile home park remains as exposed today as it was that night.

    Taylorville Tornado - Illinois (2018)

December tornadoes are rare in central Illinois, which is part of what makes the Taylorville storm of December 1, 2018 worth studying. A tornado warning went out at 5:12 PM for central Christian County; the tornado touched down eighteen minutes later, just west of town, and intensified from a weak EF-1 to a strong EF-3 in under two minutes. This episode reconstructs the storm's passage through Taylorville as a wedge nearly half a mile wide, with maximum winds later estimated at 160 miles per hour and a path width reaching eight hundred yards. More than five hundred structures were damaged or destroyed before the tornado lifted at 6:08 PM northeast of town. The documentary follows the warning chain of sirens, phones, and weather radios, asking why a storm with above-average lead time still caught people unprotected, and what the damage survey revealed about how homes fail in extreme wind.

Coal City Tornado - Illinois (2015)

The sky over Coal City, Illinois, turned an unnatural green on the evening of June 22, 2015. This episode follows the supercell that radar in Romeoville tracked across Grundy County, the hook echo that tightened at 8:28 PM, and the tornado that struck the town just after sunset. The National Weather Service later determined winds reached 150 miles per hour, an EF3, with a damage path up to six hundred yards wide. The reconstruction covers the twelve minutes the tornado spent on the ground, beginning in a farm field near the intersection of County Road 1000 and County Road 2000 southwest of town, and the survey work that made the EF3 rating official by two o'clock the following afternoon. It also examines what protected residents that night, including a safe room engineered to withstand winds of 250 miles per hour, and what the storm revealed about surviving a violent tornado in the dark.

    Gifford Tornado - Illinois (2013)

On the same November afternoon in 2013 that Washington, Illinois, was devastated, a separate tornado struck the small town of Gifford in east-central Illinois. This episode reconstructs that storm, which touched down at 1:23 PM roughly three miles southwest of town and carved a 7.2-mile path in eleven minutes before lifting at 1:34 PM. Survey teams rated it EF-3, with maximum winds estimated at 140 miles per hour. The documentary traces the atmospheric setup that day, including extreme wind shear, unstable air, and the moderate risk issued by the Storm Prediction Center that morning, and situates Gifford within an outbreak that produced at least thirty-three tornadoes across seven states. It then turns to a question raised by the wreckage: why mobile homes remain among the deadliest places to be in a tornado, and what the research on shelter access says about who survives and who does not.

    Harrisburg Tornado - Illinois (2012)

Harrisburg, Illinois, was asleep when a tornado warning went out at 4:44 AM on February 29, 2012. The supercell responsible had already produced an EF3 tornado near Ridgway fifteen minutes earlier and was moving northeast at about fifty miles per hour. This documentary reconstructs the pre-dawn minutes in which the tornado crossed into Saline County, reached EF4 intensity, and cut through the heart of a city of nine thousand people, leaving a damage path half a mile wide in places before lifting near the Saline River. Eight people died and more than one hundred were injured. The episode places the storm within a Midwest outbreak that produced forty-one tornadoes in twenty-four hours, examines why many residents never heard the warning in the darkness, and follows the recovery, including the memorial built in a downtown park listing the names of the eight who were lost.
