Beginner Afrikaans 8: Talk About Your Hobbies and Free Time

Learn how to talk about the things you enjoy doing in natural, everyday Afrikaans. In Episode 8 of the beginner series, we’re talking about hobbies and free time. You’ll learn how to say what you like, what you enjoy doing, how often you do it, and how to ask someone else about the things they enjoy. You’ll practise everyday Afrikaans phrases such as: In my vrye tyd lees ek. — In my free time, I read. Ek hou van musiek. — I like music. Ek lees graag. — I enjoy reading. Ek luister graag na musiek. — I enjoy listening to music. Ek kyk graag flieks. — I enjoy watching movies. Ek stap graag. — I enjoy walking. Ek speel tennis. — I play tennis. Ek kuier saam met my vriende. — I spend time with my friends. Wat doen jy graag? — What do you enjoy doing? Hoe gereeld doen jy dit? — How often do you do it? Hoekom hou jy daarvan? — Why do you like it? You’ll also practise using words such as gewoonlik, soms and af en toe to talk about how often you do something. Throughout the episode, you’ll answer questions, change familiar sentence patterns to make them your own, and practise having a simple conversation about your free time. At the end, you’ll put everything together and talk about the things you genuinely enjoy doing — whether that’s exercising, reading, watching TV, spending time with friends or simply relaxing at home. This is an interactive beginner lesson, so speak along and answer the questions during the pauses. You don’t need an unusual or impressive hobby. The goal is to use Afrikaans to talk about your real life. Presented by Nerika from Lexorial. Visit lexorial.com for more Afrikaans learning resources.
