The CALM Parent - with Katie McKenna

Katie McKenna

You did the work to understand your childhood – so why do you react in ways you swore you never would? The CALM Parent is for the parent who had to grow up too fast — and knows exactly which parent they don't want to become. The roles were reversed – your parents were the ones who needed regulating, but you were the one who had to do it. This is how it ends with you.  Katie McKenna is an Accredited Psychotherapist, Author of the Sunday Times Bestseller 'You're Not The Problem', Host of 'Beyond Survival' - The Therapy Podcast, creator of The CALM Method, and Mother of four.

    One Limit – One Boundary

One Limit. One Boundary. Stop Getting Sucked Into the Escalation. Your child slams the door, shouts “I hate you”, throws a tantrum or pushes back when you say no. What happens next? Do you hold your ground, lose your cool, pile on more consequences, or find yourself desperately trying to fix things because you can't tolerate their anger? In this episode of The CALM Parent, we're looking at how to hold boundaries without getting pulled into the emotional chaos that can follow. You'll learn the difference between a limit and a boundary, why your child's anger doesn't mean you've caused harm, and how to recognise when your own nervous system is driving you to react, over-explain, threaten or make amends. We'll also explore why this can be particularly challenging for parents of neurodivergent children, how to step out of the escalation without becoming permissive, and how to return to conversations about accountability and repair when everyone is regulated. The takeaway? You don't have to fix their feelings, match their anger or keep adding consequences. You can hold the limit, hold the boundary and stay the adult in the room. Because your child's anger can be uncomfortable without being dangerous. And you can be a loving, connected parent without giving in. The CALM Method Doors are open.
