How Divorce Affects Children: What Parents Often Miss

We do so much to protect our kids from stress and conflict at home, especially when we’ve been in an unhappy or toxic marriage, but understanding how divorce affects children means looking beyond what they see and hear. There are things most of us haven’t considered that can have lasting effects, and knowing what to look for can help us make intentional choices today that support our kids as they grow, no matter how old they are now. You might be in the ‘should I get a divorce?’ phase, realizing you’re already living the quiet quitting marriage trend, or trying to figure out co-parenting. Whatever your situation, understanding what your kids really experience can help you decide how to show up for them as you move forward. In this episode, I sit down with Meghan Schmelzer, a social worker and behavioral therapist with ZERO TO THREE, to talk about what babies and young children pick up on when things get hard at home. Some of what she shared challenged assumptions I’d made myself. Kids don’t have to witness an argument to be affected, and experiences from those first few years, and even in the womb, can shape their emotional well-being long into adulthood. But this conversation isn’t meant to leave you feeling guilty or scared. It’s about understanding how divorce affects children in ways many of us were never taught, and recognizing the opportunities we still have to support them. You’ll come away with a clearer sense of what your kids actually need from you (even if some of it feels unfamiliar), what connection and repair can look like in real life, and why it’s worth starting now. Even if your kids seem fine, this conversation could change what you notice and what you do next. Dreading Every Text From Your Ex? How to Break the Co-Parenting Conflict Cycle

If the thought of co-parenting with your ex fills you with dread, especially when even a simple text can trigger anxiety or turn into conflict, this episode is for you. Hearing one father speak candidly about the patterns that kept conflict alive after his divorce may shift how you think about your own communication and what it might take to make co-parenting feel more manageable. Todd spent three and a half years navigating a divorce while still living with his former wife and trying to remain present for their two children. He offers an honest look at the process from his perspective, how the divorce system sometimes intensified their conflict, and why good intentions were not always enough to keep them from falling into familiar patterns. Todd reflects on what he has learned and how his search for a better way to communicate eventually led him to develop a tool intended to help other co-parents avoid some of the stress he experienced during the early stages of co-parenting. It’s a candid conversation about the fear, defensiveness, emotional triggers, and unresolved history that can make communication so difficult, even when both parents love their children and want what is best for them. The 3 Big Mistakes Moms Make in a High-Conflict Divorce | Attorney Leslye Swigert

Navigating a high-conflict divorce with a controlling spouse can leave you afraid to stand up for yourself, and exhausted from trying to keep the peace. From manipulation and mediation to financial power imbalances and legal abuse, this candid conversation with divorce attorney Leslye Swigert explores what makes high-conflict divorce so difficult, and the questions that can help you find your way forward. We discuss choosing the right attorney, what happens when a spouse won’t comply, and the tension between fighting for what you want and protecting your future. Maybe you’re hoping your spouse will finally play fair. Maybe you’re worried you can’t afford an attorney, or watching legal bills grow while your spouse refuses to cooperate. Or maybe you’re wondering whether stopping the fight means letting them win. Leslye brings an attorney’s perspective to the fears so many moms carry quietly: What if I make the wrong decision? What if I can’t afford this? What if they take advantage of me again? And when every decision feels expensive and emotionally loaded, how do you know what’s actually in your best interest? Listen for a clearer understanding of your options, the questions worth asking, and what you can realistically expect from the legal process, so you can approach your next step feeling more informed and less alone. The Hidden Grief of Divorce: How Moms Can Heal and Help Their Kids

When your marriage ends, you aren’t only grieving the relationship. You may also be grieving the future you pictured, the family traditions you expected to keep, friendships that changed, financial security, time with your children, and parts of yourself you may not even realize you lost. In this honest, reflective, and genuinely fun conversation, I sit down with Liz, a divorced mom of three and certified grief professional, to talk about what grief after divorce really looks like for moms and children. We talk about why grief doesn’t follow five neat stages, why feelings can resurface around graduations and other family milestones, and how children may express grief in different ways. Liz also shares how she made room for her sons’ feelings without trying to fix them, found support when no one in her close circle was divorced, and learned to stop spending her energy trying to make other people understand her decisions. This is also a very real conversation about crying in the car, learning to say less to your ex, becoming the “token divorced woman” in the room, and occasionally announcing your divorce with jazz hands because you have no idea how else to say it. If you are worried about your children, struggling with the life you didn’t expect, or wondering why certain losses still hit you long after the divorce began, I hope this episode helps you understand what you’re feeling and reminds you that you don’t have to rush through it. Your life may not look the way you once imagined. That doesn’t mean it can’t still be beautiful. **This conversation can also help family and friends understand how to support someone grieving a divorce, death, or other significant loss, even when they aren’t sure what to say. Patriarchy, Betrayal and How to Break Unhealthy Relationship Patterns | Dr. Rachel Miller, Part 2

In Part 2 of my conversation with Dr. Rachel Miller, we dig into the beliefs and relationship patterns many women have been taught to accept without questioning—including carrying the emotional weight of a relationship, excusing a partner’s lack of effort and believing it’s our job to keep everything and everyone together. We also talk honestly about betrayal and infidelity: why it can shake your sense of self, what real accountability and repair look like, and the difficult balance between transparency and surveillance when trust has been broken. Rachel offers practical guidance for women navigating divorce and high-conflict co-parenting, including how to stop taking the bait, what to share with your children and why being the “bigger person” matters, even when you are thoroughly exhausted from taking the high road. This conversation isn’t about telling you what to do. It’s about recognizing the beliefs and patterns influencing your decisions so you can decide what aligns with your values—and the life you want to live. Why Women Feel Stuck - and How to Move Forward | Dr. Rachel Miller

How do you know when your marriage is going through a difficult season—and when it’s costing you too much to stay? In Part 1 of my conversation with Dr. Rachel Miller, a therapist, educator, and researcher, we talk honestly about why women can spend years trying to convince themselves that things will get better. Leaving doesn’t just mean losing a relationship. It can mean disrupting your children’s lives, changing your financial reality, losing family and friends, and letting go of everything you thought your life would be. Dr. Miller explains why women often grieve a marriage long before they leave, why their partners may still feel blindsided, and why she has never personally heard a woman say she regrets filing for divorce—even when she deeply regrets parts of the process. We also talk about: • Why accountability, not perfect communication, is essential to a healthy relationship • What motherhood, the mental load and unequal expectations can do to a marriage • Why children usually know more about the conflict at home than parents realize • The difference between ordinary relationship problems and a pattern of power and control • Why leaving an abusive relationship doesn’t always end the abuse • Protecting yourself through parallel parenting, firm boundaries and limited communication This conversation is for the mom lying awake asking, “How bad does it have to get before I’m allowed to leave?” It won’t make that decision for you. But it may help you separate hope from fear, look more honestly at the patterns in your relationship, and make a decision rooted in your own values, not everyone else’s judgment. And if you are dealing with a controlling or high-conflict partner, Dr. Miller offers practical insight into finding informed legal and emotional support, reducing unnecessary engagement and rebuilding trust in your own reality. A Story of Divorce, Shame, and Choosing Yourself

What happens when your husband is a good man and a loving father, but something inside you still knows the marriage isn’t right? Dana felt that uncertainty before she even walked down the aisle. For years, she tried to quiet it. There was no affair, no explosive conflict and no obvious villain. But eventually, living with the question became harder than finally saying it out loud. In this honest conversation, Dana shares what it took to leave a marriage that looked wonderful from the outside. She talks about moving into an apartment without telling her parents—or even her twin sister—losing the client responsible for most of her income, navigating the shame of being the person who initiated the separation, and learning how to stand on her own after years of financial dependence. We also talk about: • Why leaving a good person can feel more confusing than leaving an obviously unhealthy relationship • The difference between loving someone and being in the right marriage • How other people’s opinions can become heavier than the divorce itself • The fear of being alone—and how it can keep us in relationships that no longer fit • Learning to accept someone without believing you have to stay with them • What women on the receiving end of an unwanted divorce may need to hear • Moving from wanting someone to rescue you to becoming the leader of your own life Dana’s story is a powerful reminder that you can work on your side of the relationship, protect your children from unnecessary conflict and begin building a life that feels like your own. If you’re questioning your marriage, struggling with guilt or judgment, or wondering whether you’re strong enough to face what comes next, this conversation may help you feel less alone.  Chapters 00:00 Cold Open 02:24 Realizations Before Marriage: The Inner Conflict 05:02 The Courage to Speak Up: First Conversations 10:43 Facing the Fear: The Decision to Move Out 15:16 The Struggles of Separation: Shame and Self-Reliance 20:37 The Challenge of Moving On: Financial Independence 25:27 The Weight of Secrecy: Living in Silence 30:10 The Impact of Others' Perceptions: Navigating Judgment 32:18 Finding Peace: Overcoming Shame and Guilt 38:29 Reflection and Growth: From Struggle to Strength FIND ME ON: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/brooketalksdivorce TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@brooketalksdivorce Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/brooketalksdivorce LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/brooke-gaston/ Website: http://alifereimagined.com Blog: http://alifereimagined.com/divorce-blog-for-moms Divorce Support Resources: http://alifereimagined.com/resources Free Divorce Guides: https://alifereimagined.com/freebies/
