Coraline: Hidden Symbolism, Childhood Fears & the Illusion of Perfection

What if everything you've ever wanted came at the cost of who you are? This Halloween, Inside Fictional Minds takes a psychological deep dive into Coraline, exploring the film's haunting symbolism, childhood perception, and the dangerous illusion of perfection. Licensed therapists Sophia Vale Galano, LCSW, and Jordan Long Sheridan, LMFT, are joined by Dr. Martha Koo to examine the psychology of control, attachment, identity, and the blurred line between love and manipulation. From the eerie symbolism of button eyes to the Other Mother's seemingly perfect world, they explore how Caroline captures a child's desire to feel seen, loved, and understood—and how those needs can be exploited. The conversation unpacks emotional neglect, love bombing, childhood development, and the psychological dangers of relationships that seem too good to be true. Why does the Other Mother's version of love feel so unsettling? What do the button eyes reveal about identity and control? And when does the pursuit of perfection become a psychological trap? Join us for a Halloween special exploring the hidden meanings of Coraline, where childhood fantasy meets psychological horror—and the most terrifying things aren't always what they seem. Martha B. Koo is a board-certified psychiatrist, addiction medicine specialist, psychoanalyst, certified psychedelic-assisted therapist, and behavioral health executive. She completed her undergraduate education at Princeton University, earned her medical degree and psychiatry residency training at UCLA, completed psychoanalytic training at the New Center for Psychoanalysis and psychedelic-assisted therapy certification through the California Institute of Integral Studies. Diagnosing Dexter: Psychopathy, Trauma & the Dark Passenger | A Forensic Psychiatrist Weighs In

Is Dexter Morgan a psychopath, a product of childhood trauma, or something far more complicated? And why do we find ourselves rooting for a serial killer? This week on Inside Fictional Minds, licensed therapists Sophia Vale Galano, LCSW, and Jordan Long Sheridan, LMFT, are joined by general and forensic psychiatrist Dr. Jennifer Rosenthal to dissect the psychology behind television's most compelling serial killer. From the original Dexter series to Dexter: New Blood, Dexter: Original Sin, and Dexter: Resurrection, they explore Dexter's possible diagnoses, psychopathy vs. antisocial personality disorder, and the role of childhood trauma, genetics, and environment in shaping violent behavior. They also examine Harry's influence, Dexter's infamous "Dark Passenger," his capacity for empathy, and whether therapy could have changed his trajectory. Dr. Rosenthal brings a forensic psychiatrist's perspective to the conversation, exploring the insanity defense, competency to stand trial, and the intersection of mental illness and criminal responsibility. What would a real forensic psychiatric evaluation of Dexter Morgan reveal, and would he be considered mentally ill, criminally responsible, or both? Was Dexter born to kill, or was he taught to believe he had no other choice? And can Harrison break the cycle of trauma and violence? With Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 premiering October 30, we're putting everyone's favorite serial killer on the therapy couch. Remarkably Bright Creatures: Grief, An Octopus & the Healing Power of Connection

Who knew an octopus could teach us so much about grief, loneliness, and human connection? This week on Inside Fictional Minds, licensed therapists Sophia Vale Galano, LCSW, and Jordan Long Sheridan, LMFT, dive into Remarkably Bright Creatures, comparing the beloved novel with its Netflix adaptation and exploring the psychology behind its unforgettable characters. From Tova's quiet grief and Cameron's search for belonging to Marcellus's surprisingly therapeutic presence, they explore the many ways loss can shape our relationships, identities, and ability to connect. They discuss grief beyond sadness, including isolation, shame, survivor guilt, abandonment, and the ways we sometimes avoid vulnerability to protect ourselves from further pain. Sophia and Jordan also examine the psychology of caregiving, the role of animals as sources of nonjudgmental companionship, and how unexpected relationships can restore a sense of purpose. Along the way, they share their reactions to the book-to-screen adaptation, Sally Field's portrayal of Tova, Alfred Molina's unforgettable Marcellus, and the emotional twists that bring these characters together. Why is it sometimes easier to connect with an animal than another person? And can unexpected relationships help us heal from losses we may never fully understand? Join us for a heartfelt exploration of grief, resilience, family bonds, and the healing power of being seen—even by an octopus. Ted Lasso: The Psychology Behind The Smile

Following the Ted Lasso Season 4 finale, Jordan and Sophia break down the psychology behind the iconic series, revisiting its most memorable characters and storylines across the seasons, with a special focus on Season 4. Ted Lasso is more than a feel-good show. It’s a deeper look at anxiety, grief, masculinity, and the pressure to keep it together when you’re struggling inside. Sophia and Jordan unpack the psychology behind the series, from Ted’s panic attacks and Dr. Sharon’s approach to therapy to the complicated relationship between identity, vulnerability, and athletic culture. They explore when positivity becomes a coping mechanism, why being high-functioning doesn’t mean being okay, and what the show gets right (and wrong) about therapy, emotional regulation, and male vulnerability. Sophia also shares her personal connection to Richmond, London, and how navigating life between England and America shaped her understanding of culture, belonging, and mental health stigma. When does positivity become a coping mechanism? Why doesn’t being high-functioning mean you’re okay? And what happens when the person everyone relies on is struggling themselves? From grief and father-son dynamics to sports psychology and the power of sitting with discomfort, this episode explores what happens when we stop trying to fix every feeling and start learning to understand it. Because sometimes, the bravest thing isn’t believing in yourself - it’s letting others in when you don’t. Verity: Trauma Bonds, Dark Attachment & the Psychology of Control

Jordan and Sophia unpack the psychological layers of Colleen Hoover’s Verity, exploring trauma bonds, attachment, grief, manipulation, and the ways people construct—and protect—their own versions of reality. They dive into the complicated relationships between Verity, Jeremy, and Lowen, examining what drives their behavior and how trauma, loss, power, and control shape their relationships. They also break down Verity’s manuscript, the infamous letter reveal, and the role of unreliable narration in keeping both the characters—and the audience—questioning what is real. Plus, they compare the book to the film adaptation and discuss how its major changes impact the psychological dynamics of the story. How do trauma, attachment, and psychological defenses shape the stories we tell ourselves—and the people we choose to believe?
