Episode 7: The Three-Pronged Approach: Connecting Past, Present & Future

You may feel confident understanding that EMDR connects past experiences to present-day difficulties, but how confident are you in navigating the present and future prongs of the approach? And perhaps the better question: How often are you actually getting there in your work with clients? In this episode, we explore how to use the three-pronged approach to guide treatment beyond identifying and reprocessing past memories. We discuss clinical considerations for beginning with present-day triggers, how to bring the work on past memories into the present to achieve generalization of the newly laid adaptive information, and how to carry that progress into the future through adaptive responses and future templates. We also explore common clinical blind spots and the importance of following one presenting issue through all three prongs rather than moving from target to target without fully addressing the client's current concerns. Along the way, we cover procedural questions that frequently come up in consultation, offering practical tips you can take directly into your next session. When and Why to Modify: Thinking Through Modifications to the Standard Protocol

When is the Standard EMDR Protocol the best fit, and when might a modification better support the work? In this episode, part of our season on the foundations of EMDR practice, we explore the clinical reasoning behind modifications and how case conceptualization informs decisions about when, why, and how to adapt our approach. We break down EMD and EMDr, including the steps involved in each approach and the clinical indications that may make them a useful option. We also discuss other protocols and approaches, including R-TEP, G-TEP, EMDR 2.0, the Flash Technique, the DeTUR Protocol, the Dysfunctional Positive Affect Protocol, and more. The goal isn't to know every EMDR protocol or have a different approach for every client. The Standard Protocol often remains the most comprehensive option. What matters is understanding the clinical reasoning behind our choices and recognizing when an alternative may be appropriate. Want to feel more confident navigating these decisions in your own practice? Christina and I would love to connect with you in consultation and help you think through the why, when, and how of modifying your approach. 🌐 Learn more: www.theemdrconsultationcorner.com📱 Follow us on Instagram: @theemdrconsultationcorner 🎵 Music by Ken Butler. Missteps, Blunders & Getting Back on Track: Part 2

In Part 2 of this two-part conversation, we’re continuing to unpack some of the common pitfalls EMDR therapists encounter along the way, including pushing for a positive cognition that isn’t there yet, becoming too attached to the outcome, overchecking SUD levels throughout reprocessing, and offering developmental repair before a client is ready. We explore how these missteps can impact the course of therapy, what to pay attention to in the moment, and how to recognize when our clinical intentions may not align with what our clients need so we can adjust our approach and get back on track. The EMDR Consultation Corner is a podcast for EMDR therapists who want to deepen their clinical thinking, navigate complex cases, and make more intentional decisions in their work. Missteps, Blunders & Getting Back on Track: Part 1

In Part 1 of this two-part conversation, we’re unpacking some of the common pitfalls EMDR therapists encounter along the way, including the challenging transition from being a “talk therapist” to an EMDR therapist, balancing fidelity to the protocol with staying present and attuned to your client, and knowing when to move into reprocessing versus when to spend more time in preparation. We’re also talking about why intellectual insight doesn’t always translate to resolution, what happens when we lose sight of the body, and how missing signs of dissociation can impact the course of EMDR therapy. We explore how to recognize each of these missteps and how to get both ourselves and the client back on track.
