Are Allegorical Readings of the Bible Legit? | ABBA #2

To what extent and in what manner can we apply ancient texts about ancient people to us and to our world today? In Jeremiah 29:11 God says to the nation of Israel in exile, “I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, plans to prosper and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.” Does that mean God has plans for me and the I will prosper? Can biblical texts have more than one meaning, one fore then and one for now? How “allegorical” is too allegorical? Today we put all these questions and more to the Distinguished Professor of Old Testament and Law at Duke University Brent A. Strawn in another entry Ask Brent Basically Anything Series of the Brown Bag Bible Podcast. What Does Ezekiel's Bizarre Vision Mean? | Wild Texts #2 (Ezekiel 1)

What is the most intense spiritual experience that you've ever had? I don't want to assume anything, but I would bet that whatever it was, it was less intense than the insane vision of strange creatures, wheels covered in eyeballs, and a glowing figure sitting atop an amber throne that the prophet Ezekiel describes in our biblical text for this episode of the Brown Bag Bible podcast. Joining me this week as always is the Distinguished Professor of Old Testament and Law at Duke University Brent A. Strawn. Beyond trying to figure out what in the world is happening in this crazy vision, Brent and I consider the role that these kinds of intense spiritual experiences play in the sweep of the Old Testament, the Bible, and perhaps in our lives today. Is anyone still having these kind of experiences? Are there better or worse ways to seek them out? Stick around to the very end for a brand new segment on the Brownbag Bible Podcast, where Brent shares what I personally think will be an extremely controversial opinion. Did the Church Replace Israel as God's People? (Hint: No) | ABBA #1

Did the Christian Church replace the nation of Israel as the chosen people of God? In an ideal world, would all Jewish people become Christians? How does ancient Israel that we read about in the Bible relate to the modern nation-state of Israel all over contemporary newspaper headlines? Today we put all these questions to the Distinguished Professor of Old Testament and Law at Duke University Brent A. Strawn in this first entry Ask Brent Basically Anything Series of the Brown Bag Bible Podcast, I’m your host Caleb Punt, thank you for listening. Why Did God Test Abraham? | Wild Texts #1 (Genesis 22)

About halfway through Genesis, the first book of the Bible, God commands a father to sacrifice his son as a burnt offering to the Lord. Genesis 22, the story of Abraham and the Binding of Isaac is one of the most disturbing, perplexing, and finely crafted stories in the entire Old Testament. It is also the first story we are tackling on the Brown Bag Bible Podcast in our series on “Wild Texts,” during which we read the most troubling, bizarre, and confusing passages of Bible that we can find and attempt to read them as Holy Scripture. In this episode Brent and Caleb wrestle with questions like Why would God ask Abraham to commit such a terrible deed? What was Abraham thinking as he climbed that fateful mountain? And finally, is it possible that we’ve been reading this story all wrong, is it possible that Abraham actually failed God’s test, and that God never wanted Abraham to Bind Isaac in the first place?
