    Learning to Walk

Join us as we learn to anchor our trust in God's promises during uncertain times and understand why wholehearted faith is the ultimate pathway to pleasing Him. Pastor Rob Godard Hebrews 11:1-6 June 7, 2026 Growth Group NotesLearning to Walk by FaithHebrews 11:1-6IcebreakerDescribe a time when you had to trust someone or something even though you could not see the outcome. What made that trust difficult or easier? IntroductionFlorence Chadwick was swimming from Catalina Island to the California mainland when dense fog surrounded her. After fifteen hours in the water, exhausted and discouraged, she quit—only to discover she was less than half a mile from shore. Later she reflected, "If I could have seen the shore, I would have made it." Life often feels like swimming through fog. Circumstances, suffering, disappointment, uncertainty, and fear can make us question whether we should keep going. Hebrews 11 reminds us that God's people are called to walk by faith and not by sight. Faith enables us to see beyond the fog and trust the God who is always faithful. Read TogetherHebrews 11:1-6 Big IdeaFaith is confident trust in God's character and promises that leads to Word obedient living, regardless of circumstances or consequences. Discuss1. What Is Faith?According to Hebrews 11:1, faith has two key characteristics: The assurance of things hoped for.The conviction of things not seen. What stands out to you about this definition? How is biblical hope different from the way our culture typically uses the word "hope"? What promises of God are most encouraging to you right now? Why is it important that faith is grounded in God's promises rather than our feelings or circumstances? 2. Why Does Faith Matter?Read Hebrews 11:6. What does this verse teach us about our relationship with God? Why do you think people naturally tend to trust in their own goodness rather than God's grace? How does the Gospel help us understand what it means to please God? What is the difference between trying to earn God's approval and living in response to God's grace? 3. What Does Walking by Faith Look Like? The sermon emphasized that real faith is more than agreeing with truth, it changes how we live. Discuss the tightrope illustration. What is the difference between believing something intellectually and actually trusting it with your life? Where are you most tempted to walk by sight rather than by faith? How does faith affect: Decisions?Finances?Relationships?Anxiety and fear?Future plans? What area of your life currently requires the greatest trust in God? Digging DeeperRead Hebrews 10:32-34. What amazes you about the faith of these believers? Why were they able to endure suffering with joy? What does their example teach us about eternal perspective? Read 2 Corinthians 5:7. What does it practically mean to "walk by faith and not by sight" this week? ApplicationTake a few moments to identify one area where the "fog" of life is making it difficult to trust God. Ask yourself:   What truth about God do I need to believe? What promise from God's Word do I need to remember? What step of obedience is God calling me to take? How can I respond in faith rather than fear? How can I consistently walk by faith?Prayer TimeSpend time praying for one another. Pray: For greater faith in God's character and promises. For strength to persevere through trials. For courage to obey God even when circumstances are difficult. For those struggling with fear, uncertainty, anxiety, or discouragement. For CBC to be a church that walks by faith and not by sight. For opportunities to share the hope of Christ with others. For a great, FAITH FILLED summer.Memory Verse"Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen." — Hebrews 11:1....Also 11:6 Challenge This WeekEach day this week, identify one circumstance where you are tempted to walk by sight. Write down a promise from God's Word that speaks to that situation and choose one practical step of obedience that demonstrates trust in God. Let's together learn to walk by faith and not by sight.

Knowing Jesus: I Am a Child of God

Rooting our identity in Christ, rather than in achievement or tradition, offers the only pathway to true freedom. Pastor Rob Godard John 8:39-59 May 24, 2026 Cloverdale Baptist Church www.cloverdalebaptist.ca Growth Group NotesKnowing Jesus: I Am A Child of GodJohn 8:39–59Finding Your Identity in Christ Icebreaker Question Where do people most commonly look for identity and worth today? Why do those things ultimately fail to satisfy? IntroductionOur culture is obsessed with identity. People search for meaning and worth through: successappearancerelationshipsfeelingssexualityaccomplishmentssocial approvalAnd yet many are left saying: “I just don’t know who I am anymore.” In John 8, Jesus confronts a group of religious leaders who also found their identity in the wrong place. They trusted in: heritagereligionmoralitytraditionBut Jesus exposes the emptiness of those foundations and reveals where true identity is found: In Him.This passage teaches us: the right place to find identitythe right person to trustand the right pathway to followRead John 8:39–59True identity and freedom are found only through faith in Jesus Christ—the eternal Son of God—and lived out through loving obedience to Him. 1. The Right Place: Faith (vv. 39–41)The Pharisees believed their identity was secure because: they were descendants of Abrahamreligiousmoraloutwardly devotedBut Jesus says: “If you were Abraham’s children, you would be doing the works Abraham did.” (v. 39) Abraham’s defining characteristic was not family heritage—it was faith. Your identity is not ultimately found in:your backgroundyour familyyour accomplishmentsyour moralityyour feelingsIt is found through: faith in Jesus Christ.Discussion QuestionsWhat are some common places people look for identity today? Why is heritage or morality alone not enough? What does it practically mean to place your identity in Christ? Why do false identities eventually collapse under pressure?Augustine wrote: “Our hearts are restless until they rest in You.” What “broken cisterns” are you tempted to draw identity or satisfaction from instead of Christ? 2. The Right Person: Fully God (vv. 42–47; 56–58)Jesus tells them: “If God were your Father, you would love me.” (v. 42) This is one of the clearest signs of genuine salvation: a growing love for Jesus Christ. Not merely: religious activityintellectual agreementchurch attendanceBut genuine affection and submission to Him. Jesus Reveals Who He Is“Before Abraham was, I AM.” (v. 58) Jesus claims: eternal existenceequality with Goddivine authorityHe is not merely a teacher. He is: the great I AM.Your identity will only hold if it is anchored in the true Jesus: fully Godfully Saviorfully worthy of worship and obedienceDiscussion QuestionsWhy is loving Jesus different than merely believing God exists? What does Jesus mean when He says, “I AM”?Why is our view of Jesus so important to identity? What are some false ideas about Jesus people believe today?Tim Keller said: “If your god never disagrees with you, you may be worshipping an idealized version of yourself.” Are there areas where you resist or redefine Jesus instead of submitting to Him? 3. The Right Pathway: Follow Him (vv. 44–47)Jesus now shows that identity is revealed through direction and obedience. The Pharisees rejected: truthGod’s Wordand ultimately Jesus HimselfJesus makes it clear: “Whoever is of God hears the words of God.” (v. 47) To identify with Jesus means: hearing His Wordloving His truthpursuing holinessand following Him dailyFaith is not passive agreement. It is: active surrender to Christ.Discussion QuestionsWhy is neutrality toward Jesus impossible? How does obedience reveal what we truly love? What are some false worldviews Christians are tempted to adopt today? How does following Jesus lead to real freedom?Jesus does not merely improve your identity— He gives you a completely new one IN CHRIST. In Christ:you are forgivenadoptedlovedsecureand freeWhere are you finding your identity right now? The only pathway to freedom is to have your identity IN CHRIST and more and more growing IN that reality. “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” (John 8:36) Prayer FocusSpend time praying: thanking Jesus for your identity in Himconfessing false places you seek worth or securityasking God to deepen your love for Christ and His WordOther Requests:
