Episode #250: Lick A Tree, Bite A Grapefruit: LCBO West Coast IPAs | Adjunct Series

The West Coast and American IPA has had a resurgence this decade, and it's an exciting time to be a fan of clear and piney India Pale Ales. Cee and Nate made a list, headed out to respective LCBO stores in Hamilton and Ottawa, and grabbed a bunch of readily available West Coast and American IPAs. While crushing the beers, they got into the actual WC resurgence as a pendulum swing to the over-abundance of hazy IPAs, how many breweries are now introducing a West Coast IPA as a SKU in the LCBO (when traditionally it had mostly been the OG breweries), the difference in availability between stores and regions, the vast variety of approaches within the umbrella of both West Coast and American IPAs, the popularity of those weird social media skits about how gross IPAs are, the brands who have stood the test of time and how they got their longevity, and the evolution of the style into the Modern WCIPA (less malty, more hoppy, more approachable). They got into a slew of LCBO Westies between them: Nickel Brook Head Stock, Bellwoods Pig, Burdock Bears Pale Ale, Sawdust City Lone Pine, Amsterdam Bone Shaker, Cameron's Resin Rodeo, Bellwoods West of the Moon collaboration with Dominion City, Anderson Craft Ales IPA, Muskoka Mad Tom, Great Lakes Octopus Wants To Fight, Great Lakes Karma Citra. Episode #248: The Beer That Built The House with Simon Livingstone of L'Espace Public | Adjunct Series

One of our oldest friends of the show is Simon Livingstone, Co-Owner and Head Brewer at Hochelaga institution, L'Espace Public. Simmo (as Cee calls him) jumped back on to hang with Cee and chat about what they've been doing since his last time on the pod over four years ago, the success of their low ABV Lager, the move to tall cans to please retail stores and how that affects their production, their dedication to short cans amidst a tall can-friendly market, how "the beer that built the house" - Bière de Balcon (affectionally known around the brewery as Tony Balconi) - continues to outsell their other brands, whether "jabroni" is a slur, the importance of music venues and the government crackdown on permits in Montreal (including their own space they want to permit to show live music), why they collaborated with rock venue Turbo Haus, how the BAOS collab Bière de Vacances came about and the changes to the newest batch (and the lactose shortage), Simmo's passion for low ABV fruited coffee sours, and their upcoming collaboration with Montreal legends HELM. They got into five killer L'Espace beers: Olympique Lager de Course (Light Lager), Bière de Balcon Sûre aux Framboises (Raspberry Sour), Turbo Soif Italian Lager collaboration with Turbo Haus, Bière de Vacances Sûre Creamsicle (Creamsicle Sour) collaboration with BAOS Podcast, and Bière de Vacances Sûre aux Pavlova collaboration with BAOS Podcast for our 10th anniversary. This was a lot of fun - enjoy Simmo's raps!  BAOS Podcast Subscribe to the podcast on YouTube | Website | Theme tune: Cee - BrewHeads

Episode #245: That Tastes Like Nine More with Andrew McCready of Bickford Brewing | Adjunct Series

Toronto's Smallest Brewery, Bickford Brewing, jumps back on the pod just in time for their second anniversary. Founder and Head Brewer Andrew McCready joins Cee and Nate to chat about what's been happening since we last spoke, their Best New Brewery award from the CBAs, their growth into the LCBO with core brands, how they continue to remain experimental and fun, why they brew collab beers at other breweries, we discussed all five of their second anniversary collab beers (and drank three of them on the pod), Untappd beer ratings and Google Reviews and their impact on breweries, his experience beer judging in both GTA Brews and professional organizations, how he plans to iterate on his popular Patio Crusher series, his Oktoberfest plans, their recent break-in and his house fire that disrupted the year, the difference between a Kentucky and California Common, and how he continues to build and connect with his community. They got into seven killer Bickford beers - Patio Crusher Tangerine Light Lager, 3 Way IPA West Coast IPA collaboration with Samara and Steadfast, Copper & Pine Red IPA second anniversary collaboration with Granite, The Hot Minute Hoppy Brown Ale second anniversary collaboration with Jordan St. John, Vital Signs Passionfruit NZ Sour second anniversary collaboration with Pierced Mug, What Gose Round Raspberry Gose, and Buried Bridge Pilsner. This was a gem - cheers!  BAOS Podcast Subscribe to the podcast on YouTube | Website | Theme tune: Cee - BrewHeads

Episode #244: I F**ks With Ducks with John Jenkinson + Matthew Park of Burdock Brewery | Adjunct Series

One of the most legendary and impactful Ontario breweries for us from around the time the podcast began is Toronto's Burdock Brewery, and it's kinda wild this is only their first appearance. Co-Founder Matthew Park and Head Brewer John Jenkinson joined Cee and Nate to talk through both of their histories in beer (including John's first ever Head Brewer job and Burdock's Edinburgh roots), why they decided to focus mostly on Lagers and Saisons, how their wine beer hybrid obsession began and their partnership with Pearl Morissette winery in Niagara (and the BUMO series), the process of making a beer wine hybrid, their move into 8oz Pilsner cans and LCBO acceptance, their choices on packaging and why they're betting on 8oz cans, the importance of being a gateway to new craft beer drinkers, why they opened their Kensington location and the story of their extremely unique steakhouse taproom next door, how their dedication to The Band came about, and why they named their flagship IPA "Ducks". They got into seven impeccable Burdock brews - Deluxe Golden Lager, Pocket Pilsner, The Last Waltz Gold Lager collaboration with The Band, Alto Bianco Quadruple Fruit Grape Ale, Ducktown West Coast Session IPA collaboration with Beertown, Bears Pale Ale, and Ducks IPA. This was hilariously awesome - cheers! BAOS Podcast Subscribe to the podcast on YouTube | Website | Theme tune: Cee - BrewHeads
