Under the new Virginia Consumer Data Protection Act (VCDPA), consumers will have the right to access personal data that a business collects and uses about them and correct inaccuracies in that data.

Our newly released annual data breach analysis pointed out that 62% of cyberattacks that led to data breaches in 2020 involved phishing and ransomware.

By the end of the 3rd quarter in 2020, more than 3 million people already had contacted the FTC. Of them, 916,215 reports – 30% of the total number of reports – concerned with identity theft. The FTC and the ITRC have both seen growing numbers of people reporting identity theft involving unemployment benefits, government stimulus checks, and other COVID-19-related areas. So what does all this mean for consumers?

Joining us today to talk about these issues is the ITRC’s CEO Eva Velasquez and Shameka Walker, the Identity Theft Program Manager from the Federal Trade Commission in Washington, DC. Now’s a great time for this conversation because the first week of February is Identity Theft Awareness Week.
