    UN Special Envoy on Myanmar

    The U.N. Special Envoy of the Secretary-General on Myanmar, Julie Bishop, addressed the General Assembly on June 19. The speech coincided with the 81st birthday of jailed State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, who’s been held in detention since the military coup on Feb. 1, 2021. Bishop raised Aung San Suu Kyi’s isolation with regime leader Min Aung Hlaing during her last visit to Myanmar in May. The ousted leader has been held in the capital Naypyidaw by the regime.     A high-level delegation representing Myanmar’s anti-coup resistance concluded a major cross-country diplomatic tour in Canada, seeking to solidify international support and officially introduce a newly forged political and military alliance.
