The Lakers just can't stop getting in their own way

FULL EPISODE: Anthony offers up the latest that he heard from Vegas, where most people seem resigned to the Lakers running it back next season. He did outline a couple moves on the margins the Lakers could make, if they cared about such things. He also briefly touches on the Lakers fumbling a real asset for no practical or sentimental reason. He wraps up with questions from the mailbags.

The latest on Wendell Carter Jr. and Gary Trent Jr. ... and LeBron James Jr.

Anthony heard enough noise about these things that he figured he'd record a quick episode before he made the trip out to Las Vegas.

PART ONE: Anthony and Raj break down Team USA comfortably handling Team Canada. Anthony Davis should probably start from here on out. Oh, and boy, it sure seems like LeBron and Steph like playing together.

Hey Anthony

The worst place to be in the NBA is middle of the pack. Best we could do was the 8 seed with the healthiest possible years out of AD and Bron. Yeah, Vando and Gabe COULD be more healthy next year but that doesn’t make us contenders. Bron and AD coming off a summer of no rest I doubt they play as many games this year. IMO there’s no move that puts us in contention with the already younger AND more talented west. SAC, NOP, and Memphis all going to be better this year. PLUS Wemby is coming. We have the 5th highest salary in the NBA and no ways to significantly improve the roster. Per spoctrac this works…AD and Brown for Jalen Johnson, Okongwu, Bufkin, Bogdanovic, our 2025 FRP and 3-4 more FRP. Flip Bogdanovic at the deadline for more assets. Revisit talks with GSW for Bron. The reason 14-18 was so bad is we started our rebuild with no assets and the longer we wait for Rob to pull a rabbit out of his hat, the closer we get to another doomsday rebuild with zero assets. Brons gone in 1-2 years anyway and why would AD stick around after that.

Mailbag - Rob

The front office are giving out player options because of the year that Monk had. Lakers know people will go there to rehab their stock. If Reddish and Hayes would’ve popped last year we would’ve been praising Rob for negotiating another year of control. Let him cook

Levine and next year

Hey, Anthony—Speak that Levine trade into existence! Levine and a first for DLo, Vando (or Rui) and Gabe plus maybe a second. Unfortunately, that trade is so logical that you know that the inept Lakers front office won’t do it. Still, keep pushing it!

You asked about whether Lebron would take less money next year to chase a championship with his son. But he’d have to opt out to do that, and I’m concerned that with his age, playing in the Olympics, and consequent likelihood of injury, Lebron won’t be worth anywhere near what he’s making if he opts out anyway. I think his best strategy is to opt in and then demand that the Lakers trade him and Bronny to a contender, because this inept front office can’t or won’t add the necessary pieces to make the Lakers a contender next year, especially with AD aging as well. Thoughts?

You’re the best! Can’t wait for the Vegas Summer League episodes.Lakers Exceptionalism
