Just Liberty

The whole idea of religious freedom in America has taken a PR hit. For some, it’s a cover for for bigotry or tool for Christian nationalists; for others it’s the last line of defense in a society that’s becoming hostile to traditional faith. Is there a better way to think and talk about religious freedom in America that doesn’t buy into political extremes? Join hosts Alan Reinach - executive director of the Church-State Council who has been litigating religious liberty cases for nearly 40 years - and Bettina Krause - editor of Liberty Magazine, which has been at the forefront of religious liberty conversations since 1906 - as they interview experts in law politics, or faith to tackle tough religious freedom questions - not just from the courts, but from the culture. Listen to Liberty Matters for a fresh, balanced take on religious liberty and church-state issues. Coming Spring 2024. Subscribe now so you never miss an episode.

28: A matter of survival with Steve McFarland

A matter of survival. Why a legal principle called "church autonomy" is again facing scrutiny in the courtroom. An interview with Steve McFarland. Question: What makes an Adventist school "Adventist" or a Catholic charity "Catholic" or a Islamic humanitarian agency "Islamic"? Answer: In large part, its employees. Without staff members who share the same mission, beliefs, and standards of conduct, a faith-based organization be would just ... an organization. In recent years, though, the hiring practices of religious entities have been challenged, along with a legal principle known as "church autonomy" that has long prevented the government from weighing in on religious practices and beliefs. What could be the consequences if these challenges succeed? We ask Steve McFarland, director of the Law and Religious Freedom Center at the Christian Legal Society, and former vice-president and chief legal officer for the Christian relief agency World Vision. ______________ Guest: Steve McFarland, Christian Legal Society FB: https://www.facebook.com/clsnetLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/company/christian-legal-society/posts/?feedView=all ______________ Show Notes: Legal brief of Christian Legal Society in McMahon v.
