Life Online is a new podcast from Ofcom. Across the series, we’re going to be speaking to experts about what adults and kids in the UK are doing online, how they feel about it, and what can be done to keep people safe. Because you may have heard that, here in the UK, new online safety laws are being debated in Parliament. These will give Ofcom new powers and duties to help people lead a safer life online. Whether it’s how we protect children when they go online, how we tackle misinformation and terrorism, or how the platforms themselves need to innovate to make sure they follow the new rules. So join us for a journey into Life Online.

    Crossing the line: Analysing the online abuse faced by professional footballers

    Ofcom teamed up with The Alan Turing Institute to analyse more than 2.3 million tweets directed at Premier League footballers over the first five months of the 2021/22 season.   Our research found that while the vast majority of fans use social media responsibly, hundreds of abusive tweets are sent to footballers every single day.  Seven in every ten Premier League players are targeted but twelve players in particular face a barrage of abuse with half of all abuse directed towards them.  This is a live recording of an event held at the National Football Museum in Manchester in August 2022, with a panel discussion hosted by Jules Breach (BT Sports), and features Gary Lineker, Aoife Mannion (Manchester United), Maheta Molango (Professional Footballers' Association), Sanjay Bhandari (Kick It Out), and Richard Wronka (Ofcom's Online Safety team).

    Online Bullying in the Digital Playground

    In this episode of Life Online we talk about online bullying: Ofcom research tells us that kids are more likely to be bullied on a device than in person.  We know the impact of bullying on children and their families can be stark. But what is it like for children who are targeted by others, on the sites and apps where they hang out? What can be done to tackle it? And how can parents talk to their children about an online landscape they may not fully understand? To help find the answers Joe Smithies speaks to the doctor, author and broadcaster Dr Radha Modgil, who has a lot of expertise in this area and Alex Holmes, who is deputy Chief Executive of the Diana Award, where he works with young people on anti-bullying initiatives. We also speak to three teenagers who are anti-bullying ambassadors from the Diana Award about their own experiences of bullying in the digital playground.

    The Genuine Article: Tackling Misinformation

    More than a third of internet users are unaware that online content might be false or biased, according to new Ofcom research.  Every minute sees 500 hours of content uploaded to YouTube, 5,000 videos viewed on TikTok and 695,000 stories shared on Instagram. Given the sheer volume of information at the touch of our smartphones, having the right critical skills and understanding to decipher fact from fiction has never been more important. In this first episode of Ofcom’s podcast A Life Online, we hear from experts including Professor Rasmus Nielson, Director of the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism and Professor of Political Communication at the University of Oxford, and Rebecca Skippage, Disinformation Editor, BBC News, on the spread of misinformation and disinformation online and what can be done to tackle it.
