January 1989 Pop Culture: Mary Stuart Masterson & Wacko Entertainment Poll Results

January 1989 Pop Culture: Mary Stuart Masterson & Wacko Entertainment Poll Results

The pop culture topics of the January 1989 issue cover a lot of ground, from a sad update on June 1988 child genius profile subject Adragon DeMello to the movie Patrick Swayze's doing instead of a Dirty Dancing sequel (it's only ROAD HOUSE!!!), five-star reviews for two very dark movies, and a sweet profile of Mary Stuart Masterson. But there's also a lot of snarking at the stars! Paul Hester of Crowded House lets Karen down by not being as hilarious as his stage persona. Duran Duran's latest dance album gets slammed. And a whole bevy of celebrities are judged and found wanting as Sassy reports the results of its entertainment poll. Retract your claws -- or don't! -- and join us for our latest podcast!

January 1989 Teen Life: Tattoos, Teen Dads & The First-Ever Sassiest Girl In America

January 1989 Teen Life: Tattoos, Teen Dads & The First-Ever Sassiest Girl In America

3, 2, 1, HAPPY NEW YEAR! It's 1989, and we're kicking off our coverage of the January issue by talking about its Teen Life topics. What's teen pregnancy like for the dads? Why is your body going wacko? How did Christina survive an Outward Bound rafting trip? And who was named the very first Sassiest Girl In America? (Okay, the cover kind of gives that one away.) There's also What He Said about tattoos; a trip to Wabash, IN; another too-whimsical fiction story; a wildly fake It Happened To Me; and so much more. Make some noise!

December 1988 Fashion Etc.: Marilyn, Layers & Spa Treatments

December 1988 Fashion Etc.: Marilyn, Layers & Spa Treatments

The fashion (etc.) of the December 1988 issue features one spread inspired by the style of Marilyn Monroe, and another that shows you how to layer to stay both cute AND warm! There's also a story that we might say culturally appropriated the Roma people, except (a) that's not the word in the headline and (b) the interpretation is pretty loose. There are also step-by-step instructions on getting ready for a party, editors' reports on various spa treatments, more Christmas stuff in Sassy Club, a bunch of new ads, and more! It's a gift!

Hilarious! This Network Never Fails!

Another fantastic podcast from my favorite crew! I cry laughing throughout each episode! Edited my review to note that David is OUT OF CONTROL in the show!

Podcast for everyone- you don’t need to have read Sassy to love this

I’ll admit I procrastinated on trying this out “a podcast reading through a 1988+ teen magazine? How does that work?” I was silly to not try it earlier because it is the happiest, funniest podcast I’ve heard in a long time. Pam, Dave & Tara are fantastic.

You don’t need to have ever read Sassy, into teen magazines or even have been a kid or in the 80’s/90’s to enjoy this. Just be human and like good podcasts & let them paint you the picture (though adding the visuals on their website or Instagram to the experience is a recommended bonus- but not required to enjoy this.) You can jump in at any point though I’m very happy I started at the beginning so I could follow along with Dave’s mini masterpiece theater of “Sassy Reader” 😂

Dennis is the worst…

…but this podcast is the best! A recap podcast (leave it to the professionals!) of a magazine seems like it shouldn’t work but it absolutely does, and this is so much fun. Great memories of Sassy (and many that make me feel like I’m talking about this with my cool older sister, who was the subscriber in our house back in the day), awesome episode notes and visual aids, and hosts who you want to hang out with - what could be better? LOVE IT.
