Shut the Laptop. No, Really: Recovery That Actually Works

It's 5:57 p.m. You've made 47 significant decisions, answered the emails and solved the problems, so you shut the laptop and you're done, right? Not quite. Because somehow in the midst of prepping dinner and fielding questions, you're mentally sitting in tomorrow's 9 a.m. meeting. Feel familiar? We want to be excellent at our work. We want to keep our commitments to the people counting on us. We want to be present at our own dinner table—and, if we're being really honest, we want to feel fully alive, not just productive. Excellence isn't running at full power 24/7. Excellence needs recovery. But how do you actually turn off when the deadlines are real? In this episode of the Make Life Count podcast, we're talking about what it takes to truly shut the laptop—and what to put back in its place. We get honest about what disappears first when life gets busy, and why our ability to rest starts with whether our worth is tied to our productivity. We'll walk through the four recovery experiences from organizational psychology research and Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith's seven types of rest, because sleep alone doesn't fix every kind of exhaustion. Along the way, you'll hear about a 15-year-old who loves golf because "my brain goes quiet," a young business owner up until 3 a.m. on TikTok because "it just feels so good," and a CEO client who discovered that one beer a month with an old friend gives him what he needs. Our hope? That you stop sacrificing the things that make you come alive, that you become as intentional about your recovery as you are about your productivity, and that you remember you are a human being, not a human doing. The Make Life Count Dare: Do something this week that makes you come alive—and put it on your calendar. Then post a picture and hashtag it #MakeLifeCount so we can help each other make life count. The Trust Shortcut Hiding in Every Conversation

Think about the people you'd call at 2 a.m., no explanation needed. Now think about the ones you've known for years and still keep at arm's length. What's the difference? We all say we want deeper relationships—but what actually builds trust, the real kind, not just the appearance of it? None of us sets out to be hard to trust. We want to be trusted. We want to trust the people around us. We want relationships where the guard comes down—and, if we're being really honest, we want to know why some people earn that instantly while others never quite do. We want the shortcut. But how do you actually build trust, on purpose, in an ordinary conversation?  In this episode of the Make Life Count podcast, we're digging into the everyday conversations that quietly build—or erode—trust, long before any "big" moment ever tests it. We'll walk through the Triad's formula for building trust as a leader and as a person: transparency, vulnerability, and hope. We'll talk about Charles Duhigg's three types of conversations—practical, emotional, social—and why matching them matters more than most of us realize, what quietly breaks trust fast, and the real difference between being liked and being trusted. Our hope? That you walk away with one real conversation to have this week—and watch the distance between you and someone else start to close. Let's go to work. 90 Seconds of Emotion

People talk a lot about staying calm under pressure. But what does that actually look like in the moment it matters most? Most of us aren't trying to be robots. We want to feel things—fully, honestly. We want to be moved by what matters and unbothered by what doesn't. We want our emotions to inform us instead of running us—and, if we're being really honest, we want to stop losing entire afternoons to a thirty-second slight. We want ninety seconds to be enough. But how do you actually let a feeling pass instead of spiraling on it for hours?  In this episode of the Make Life Count podcast, we're digging into the science and the practice behind one of our favorite tools: the 90-second rule—the idea that the body's original wave of emotion runs its course in about ninety seconds, unless we keep re-triggering it ourselves. We'll get unusually candid—a best friend gone silent, a totaled car, a marriage micro-blowup—to show you what's actually happening in your body during a trigger. We'll talk about the three-step formula, feel it, name it, boss it, why the middle of the night is the worst possible time to think your way out of a spiral, and how to pre-decide your response before you ever need it. Our hope? That you walk away able to let the next wave pass like weather instead of building a home in it. Feel it. Name it. Boss it. Keep moving toward who you actually want to be. Let's go to work. Research & Resources Referenced Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor — TED Talk "My Stroke of Insight" and her book of the same name: the body's first chemical wave of an emotion runs its course in roughly 90 seconds. The Story You're Telling Yourself

The Story You're Telling Yourself Episode #2;  Release date: TBD Hosts: Krista Gilbert, Emily Love, Emily Jamieson (EmJ) — The Transformation Triad Overview We all want to trust our own memory. But what if the story you're so sure about isn't actually true? Most of us walk through life certain that what we remember is simply what happened. We trust our version of events. We trust our own feelings as proof. We build entire relationships, entire identities, on the stories we tell ourselves—and, if we're being really honest, we rarely stop to ask whether those stories are actually accurate. We want the truth. Or at least, we think we already have it. But what if you don't? What if the story running your life right now isn't the whole picture? In this episode of the Make Life Count podcast, we're digging into the idea that shapes more of your life than you realize: the stories you tell yourself—and whether they're actually true. We'll take you into a real, unedited family story—a poolside disagreement between Emily Love and her sister about their own childhood—and use it to introduce a four-part framework for examining what we carry: Facts, Feelings, Filter, and Freedom. We'll talk about why two people can both be honest and still remember things completely differently, how to tell the difference between a feeling being valid and a story being true, and what it looks like to trade an old story for a truer, freer one. Our hope? That you walk away willing to question the story you've been telling yourself. Look at it honestly. Test it against the facts. Choose, on purpose, the story that actually sets you free. Let's go to work. Research & Resources Referenced Brené Brown — the "what's the story I'm telling myself?" practice, echoing themes from Rising Strong. (exact wording not confirmed verbatim against the book this session)Dr. Daniel Amen — "ANTs" (automatic negative thoughts) and the challenge questions "Is it true? Is it totally true?" (amenclinics.com)Jerry Sittser — theologian and author of A Grace Disguised: How the Soul Grows Through Loss. (the specific primary/secondary-emotions framework attributed to him in the episode wasn't independently verified this session)Viktor Frankl — Man's Search for Meaning, referenced for "the space between stimulus and response." (this specific line is a common misattribution — Quote Investigator traces it more likely to psychologist Rollo May, popularized by Stephen Covey)The "three witnesses at a car accident" anecdote — popular pop-psychology folklore illustrating that divergent accounts can be a sign of honesty; not traced to a specific study or source.Connect with The Transformation Triad Website: thetransformationtriad.comInstagram: @thetransformationtriadYouTube: @thetransformationtriadContact: thrive@thetransformationtriad.comLive your purpose. Overview People talk a lot about living a holistic life. But what does that actually mean? Most of us aren’t trying to just get through our lives—we want to make the most of them. We want to be great at what matters. We want meaningful work, strong relationships, a life that feels aligned—and, if we’re honest, to feel fully alive while we’re living it. We want a full send life. But how do you do that, really? In the first episode of the Make Life Count podcast, we’re digging into the heartbeat of our work: Whole-Life Excellence—the lifelong pursuit of becoming the same person across every domain of life, where who you are, how you love, and what you do align to make life count. We’ll take you back to how the three of us became a coaching team, including the heated cabin argument that helped us put words around this framework. We’ll talk about why excellence isn’t just about achievement, why life was never meant to be lived in separate compartments, and what it looks like to bring your whole self to your whole life. Our hope? That you walk away wanting to take the risk. Make the move. Love your people well. Do work that matters. And become more intentional about the one life you’ve been given. Full send. Let’s make it count.
